Somehow or another, Luke was running low on the Switchroot even after the ton of the plant that Jazz and Orion had found for him. Apparently there had been some accident at the lab? Whatever had happened, Jazz was glad that he knew what he was looking for this time around. Hopefully this time he wouldn't have to fight Pokemon to reach it however, that was a pain and a half. For some reason, they were very protective over the Switchroot, but then again it might've been something else.
As much as Jazz loved helping Luke out, it was nice to have an excuse to blow off some steam. Just because he knew the route, doesn't mean that he needed to head there right away. Maybe he could find a more fun way to the ledge where he and Orion had found the Switchroot. Last time he had borrowed Orion's Golbat to get to the ledge but climbing wasn't out of the question either. At least, not from what he remembered.
Jumping across a few rocks, Jazz started climbing, not bothering to use any ropes. Not that he knew how to use them anyway, but it was more thrilling to climb with nothing rather than have to figure out all the gear as well. Aside from that, it gave Jazz a chance to stretch his legs and have fun. Heh, who said lab work and research had to be boring.

Today's job was pretty routine, just doing regular patrols through a part of the Liggs mountainside, keeping an eye out for any potential dangers or Pokemon in trouble or hikers in need of assistance. It was a little dull at times, but Seraph always enjoyed it overall. The wilds let him get away from everything and really think, or not have to think if he didn't want, and offered tons of opportunities to run and jump and climb and enjoy the natural obstacle course the landscape provided.
He was just doing a bit of that, jumping from rock to rock along a path, his Monferno close behind, when he noticed something-- someone-- out of the corner of his eyes. A young man climbing up a nearby cliff freehand? "H-hey!" Seraph called.
He and Hiten abandoned their little game and hurried over. "Hey, it's dangerous to go that high like that! I'm gonna have to ask you to come down."

Jazz had managed to climb about a third of the way to the top when someone called out to him. Huh? It wasn't like he was going to come down when he was had already gotten a pretty good start. It was a little hard to hear him until they got closer. Then it seemed they were scolding him for climbing to high? Just because it was dangerous? He couldn't help but laugh at that because well, that was the point. It was so much more thrilling to climb like this, without ropes. Besides, he needed to get the Switchroot for Luke, he didn't have time to go a safer route just because climbing was dangerous.
"Naw, I kin make it,"Jazz called back down, smirking a bit, " 'n the danger is part of the fun!"he continued, waving down at the guy. Shifting his weight a little, Jazz climbed a few more feet just to show that he was fine before chancing to look down again. "Ya wanna race? If yer so concerned I'll fall, ya need ta catch me first~," Jazz called back down. It would be a nice change of pace and hey, he could even wait until the guy was at about the same height he was before climbing again.

Seraph frowned heavily. He guessed he could see where this guy would think what he was saying would sound enticing or fun, but he was on the clock right now. "Sir, I'm afraid that as a member of the Ranger Union I can't allow such reckless behavior on my patrol route. Either I'm going to need you to come down and get even a minimal amount of safety gear, or I'm going to have to get my Pokemon to help you out."
... He sighed. Yeah, even in his head and especially out loud this didn't really sound uh... If this guy was an adrenaline junkie then regulation talk was just going to annoy him, more than likely. So, Seraph thought to see if he could salvage that and compel the guy to comply by adding, "Unless you think you couldn't handle the minor extra weight. If the only way you think you could beat me is to cheat by lightening a normal load, I guess I can't blame you. I'm pretty fast." Please work.

Jazz had to laugh at the next words that came out of the guys mouth. Right. Like that was going to convince him to come down. All he heard was blah, blah, blah, authority bullshit, blah, blah, blah. He was about halfway at this point anyway so it would actually be more work to climb down and scale the wall again with stupid ropes that he wouldn't use.
At least, that was until the guy appealed to his pride. Fuck it. He was so close but this asshole decided to challenge him. Well, shit, Jazz certainly wasn't one to back down from a challenge. Smirking a bit, he palmed a pokeball and let go from the wall, releasing an Aerodactyl shortly after he started to fall. Fang was quick enough to catch him, and Jazz knew it but the ranger probably didn't. It felt nice to just let go like that and probably give the ranger a heart attack while he was at it.
"Noice catch, Fang,"Jazz praised, patting the Aerodactyl's head once he was safely on the ground. Fang didn't look too pleased at being called out just to play a prank like that, but seemed appeased for now. Turning to the ranger, Jazz crossed his arms in front of him, "Now, were ya serious about the race or was that just some ploy to get me down? I was fine where I was but hey, a challenge is a challenge," he asked, not really sure whether he should take this guy seriously or not. Eh, whatever, he looked cool as far as rangers go if it wasn't for ruining his fun of course.
"Name's Jazz, by the way," he stated almost as an afterthought. On the off chance they really were going to race, Jazz preferred to at least know his opponent's name. It was a courtesy thing.

Oh good, he stopped. Given the Aerodactyl, Seraph sort of expected him to ride down, bu-- FFF! Even with the expectation just the way he let go did make him jump. A sigh of relief followed as the Aerodactyl proved reliable.
Serious about the race or a ploy? "Eh, about half and half to be honest..." he admitted with a weak but cheeky smirk. "I'm up for it if you want. It's been pretty quiet today."
He nodded at the introduction and extended a hand. "Nice to meet you. I'm Seraph." His smile turned a bit cheesier. "Don't worry, though, I won't use my wings in our race. That'd be cheating~"

Jazz smirked a bit when the ranger said that he was at least up for it. That was something, and it would be a hell of a lot more fun if it was a race rather than climbing the wall solo. Still, Jazz wasn't about to back down from a challenge and this ranger had challenged him to a race. Whether he was serious or not, Jazz wasn't about to lose even if having to wear the necessary equipment would be a little irritating. Nevermind that Jazz hadn't actually used equipment before.
Shaking Seraph's hand, Jazz grinned and-... PFFFT. Had Seraph just... he had, hadn't he. Arceus, he liked this guy already, even if he was a stickler for stupid rules. "Awww, but I wouldn't dream of handicapping such a handsome angel~,"Jazz replied, his voice carrying more of a sing-song tone, "Besides, 'm fast enough without the ropes 'n all that jazz,"he smirked, unable to resist the name pun. It was true, too. Before Seraph came along he'd gotten pretty high up. He still needed to get the Switchroot back to Luke before it got too late but a race made playing errand boy a hell of a lot more fun.

H---handsome??? He-- Um? He got... 'cute' often enough, and used to get 'pretty', 'gorgeous', 'beautiful', and the like. But had anyone ever called him handsome?? Er, well... He was 90% sure Ranger-Mom had, but in that doting 'oh look you're getting so handsome' supportive way when he was figuring out how he wanted to present and stuff. This was, heh, decidedly different?? And the deeply flustered reaction would be more than apparent on his face.
Then came Jazz's own pun, and he chuckled softly. Uh.. Right, climbing, yeah, heh.
"Do you always climb freestyle?" he had to wonder aloud now, given Jazz's bragging about his skill at that. And if so, "Do you need any help with the safety gear or anything?" No his blush was not still faintly present, of course it faded a while ago. Or um, it would have if he'd been blushing, that is. But clearly that was just imagined.

He couldn't be quite certain, but it seemed that his half compliment half pun had made Seraph a little flustered. It was really adorable really and made Jazz want to continue teasing him just a little bit more. Hmmm... if being called handsome got a reaction like that this could be a lot more fun than he'd anticipated. Right. Focus, this was a race and Jazz wasn't about to lose, even if the ropes were going to be an annoyance. Flirting with the competition wouldn't help matters... well, unless said flirting made him more flustered. That could work.
The question however had him stopping short. Well... ok, maybe the ropes would be more of a handicap for him than he had originally thought. "Yep~, 's moar fun that way. I like the thrill of eht," Jazz mused, smirking a bit before Seraph offered help with the gear. Oh how cute, that blush was still quite obvious~. Ohhh, this was gonna be fun.
"Now why would I turn down help from handsome angel like you~. Go ahead, I'd be honored if you would show me the ropes~," Jazz mused, his voice low and almost purring as he stepped forward, more than willing to let him demonstrate how the safety gear was supposed to work. Was he laying it on a little thick? Probably. Did he care? Nope, not one bit.

SHOW. HIM. THE-- Seraph somehow managed to hold in his laugh, but it was probably blatantly obvious how pained he was doing so. "O-okay, s-so--" Oh geeze this would be easier if he could breathe properly. A few occasional shakes of his shoulders probably counted as letting out the laugh a little, but safety was important, focus Seraph.
He managed to show Jazz how the harness worked, and how to stabilize himself, and climbed up about five feet off the ground to demonstrate-- assuring Jazz he wasn't getting a head start, don't worry, he could climb up even with him in a second and make this their starting point.
"Then if you do slip and lose your grip it's just-- WHOOPS!" he feigned, leaning back and letting the rope catch him. "It's a bit slower, yeah, but a hell of a lot better than breaking your back and never climbing again, ya know?"
Post by Jazz Johnson on Mar 13, 2018 0:27:56 GMT -8
Jazz grinned at how painfully obvious it was that Seraph was holding back his laughter. Yeah, puns were awesome and that had been a little too easy. Really, it was just a way of procrastinating having to put the dumb contraption on but what the hell. He was still pretty confident he could beat Seraph even with the silly thing. Learning about the harness and other things went fairly quickly. Jazz was just not quite accustomed to the feeling of the harness and found it annoying but whatever.
Initially, Jazz squinted when Seraph started to climb, he wasn't about to let him get away with it. He calmed down quickly enough at the assurance that he wasn't going to get a headstart which was whatever but these stupid ropes felt more in the way than anything. Tch. Ok, the rope catching Seraph like that was kinda neat but it felt more like training wheels than anything to him. "Sure, I guess,"Jazz shrugged, starting to climb back up onto Seraph's level, "Takes da fun outta eht ifya ask me. Kinda like da adrenaline rush yunno."
As soon as he reached Serpah's level, he leaned back a little testing the rope some. He still wasn't used to the harness and ropes and still doubted that all these ropes and what not could be anything more than a hindrance. "So 'r we still doing dis?" The race had been the only reason he'd let Seraph talk him into this dumb thing. That and he should probably get those Switchroot plants over to Luke sooner rather than later, heh.
Assuming Seraph said yes, he would count down from three before starting to climb up the rock face. Given that he'd already climbed halfway before Seraph had caught him, Jazz knew where most of the handholds were and was scaling the wall with relative ease. Guess the harness and rope wasn't too bad after all.
