Steven Damian Grayson
Gray, Steve, Stevie. | twelve | Male, Hetersexual |
Wanderer | trainer | student; |
Appearance
Steven Damian Grayson is a fairly stocky young twelve year old, weighing about eighty five pounds and standing at just under four feet tall; it's fair to say the child is actually very short for his age compared to others of his age group. He has a somewhat chubby form, as if he hasn't lost all of his baby-fat though he has grown. Atop his head sits a mop of curly dark brown, almost black hair that He tends to leave messed up. The boy is fairly pale as well though with the slightest of tans as he does get outside quite a bit given the way he was raised and where he grew up; The boy's eyes are a dark onyx colour.
When it comes to clothing, Gray favours blue jeans or jean shorts, or sometimes overalls. On top of that the child's shirts tend to veer toward pink-ish red colouring, or actual pink in colour. In most seasons excluding late autumn and winter he wears a set of salmon pink flip flops, though in winter he tends to favour a pair of light brown snow boots.
The boy's backpack is an oddity as well as it looks like a giant cheeseburger, and he also has a duffle bag that looks like a hotdog which were purchased as christmas gifts for him by his parents.
Personality
Steven is one of those people who wants nothing more then t remain in teh background, to an extent at least. He dislikes being in the spotlight and as such tends to avoid anything involving stages such as partaking in plays, or more recently Coordenating contests as the thought of being judged displeases him. His dream however to become a great Breeder, well known and maybe even famous but overall, to become everything he is not today. He wants to become confident in himself and his skills, self assured and not awkward. Steven does want to try contests at some point but as it stands he is emotionally incapable of doing so.
Steven is socially awkward to the point where he will either choose not to say anything in a given time, or will often time stutter of his words or speak them quieter then he intends to think he is. He doesn't think he is worth anything and that nothing he says will matter to anyone around him and more often then not will let others converse about the specific decision, come to their own conclusions as to what he should do about whatever it is, and simply go along with whatever it decided: His opinion doesn't matter as much as everyone else's. At least this is how he is in groups of people consisting of 3 or more participants. When in smaller groups where he does feel he can have somewhat of a voice however, Steven will become outspoken, far more confident in what he might have to say, and far more vocal if the topic is one he knows a few things about.
This boy loves baby Pokemon, loves the idea of taking care of them, raising them and even Breeding them once in a while. In his mind this makes it possible to be something, to be worth something because, if you could provide good, healthy and cool Pokemon to others then in a way you were successful. It meant that you could one day find that one of the Pokemon you bred were champions of the Pokemon League, winners of contests, just... amazing! That would hopefully help Steven gain more confidence in himself if he could see that his Pokemon could become something; then he could as well.
Steven is one of those teens who, like many does enjoy video games and will play them at any and all times available. Within video games he can be the strong confident hero, the super skilled bad ass that everyone loves; he can be what he isn't in real life. The boy is also very artistic, tending to write short stories, poems and the like, and quite the visual artist, a great sketch artist. However as much as he loves to draw and write and as good as he is at it, in his mind this is more a hobby then something he would want to do as a career. Though proud of his writings and drawings he will avoid showing them off to people in person and instead, will hide behind an internent handle, a pseudonym and faceless author slash artist. It was something the boy could be proud of, reading the comments others left, the encouragement for him to enter some contests and so he did that too, and his pride in his writing grew as he won a few of them. Though unsure of most things he does, writing is something the boy is passionate about and will openly be able to show price for.
History
Often times when teenage girls become pregnant there are a mixture of results with what becomes of the infant they are carrying; or in teh case, the infants. She might keep the child, raise it as best she can alongside the baby's father and her own parents, may raise the child on her own, drop out of school to work to support herself and the child, or she might give it up for adoption, drop it off at a fire station or hospital to be put into the foster system: That assumes the child isn't aborted early in the pregnancy at least. With baby Steven and his older twin brother however they were not kept by their biological mother, nor were they given to a hospitall or firehouses to be put into the system but something similar yet at the same time different. Their mother separated the two, doubting a set of twins would be taken in by a single home and instead placed the two on separate doorsteps. This was the first bit of life experience the young boy would have though not remember, being ditched on a doorstep by a woman who probably didn't want to see him ever again.
Steven wasn't taken in by the first household's occupants whose doorstep he was left on, instead, was held there for the night before being left at a different household, one owned by farmers which bred starters for the Kanto Region's Pokemon Lab. His parents were a man and woman named Martha and Benjamin Grayson, and they took the boy in without question or hesitation. They had wanted a child for a long time, though Martha was unable to have any of her own and, at that time they hadn't had the money to afford adoption. Of course the couple did the right thing, brought the newborn to the police and then to a social worker and, not wanting the baby to be left in the foster system, tossed from home to home the Wayne couple offered to foster him and eventually adopt him within a year of finding him.
Steven's life was spent around Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle and their respective evolutionary lines, some used to help on the farm and others for breeding purposes. Any who could not be bred, or that came out with defects that the lab would not accept would either be kept by the family to aid on the farm or as pets, or sold to their good friends and neighbors. The Grayson family were very hard workers, dedicated to their Pokemon and career though nothing was more precious and important then their family. Steven grew up learning that family was important and to help whenever and where ever possible, to work hard and try his very best. Martha and Benjamin were extremely supportive of their son and the things he wanted to accomplish though they were weary of letting him go out on a Pokemon journey long before he had even reached the age of ten.
Steven spent most of his school life largely alone though he did manage to make two very good friends, one in kindergarten and the other in fourth grade. The boy's first day of kindergarten had rolled around before he knew it and he had held no desire to go, fear of having to leave his parents heavy in his tiny little heart: You see Martha was a stay at home parent as was Benjamin, though to be fair their jobs were located at their own homes. Because of this their young son spent the first four years of life by the two as much as he could, his father teaching him how to feed the baby Pokemon, how to bath them if needed and tend the fields and other Pokemon the large family had on it. Not only did they breed pokemon for the labs, but they also had such pokemon as Tauros and Miltank, fields of normal animals, bird that could lay eggs to be eaten, not just breeding eggs. The small family had a lot on their plates at home. Steven loved every minute of his time at home, the work his father helped him do because he was too young to do it by himself, the jobs he could manage on his own; the way his mother let him stir the pancake mix or cake mix if he wanted to help out around the house: He hadn't wanted to leave that.
Farms were pretty far from one another and as such the child's earliest social life was almost none existent, save for the next door neighbor whose aunt owned a farm filled with Ponyta and Rappidash. Even then their play was limited to being when either the girl's aunt, or Steven's mother had the time to either invite the other child over, or get together and chat. Later on Steven would learn his neighbor Anna's parents had been killed in a car crash on their way back home from a small vacation the couple had taken, having left Anna at her aunt's house where she would eventually come to live. The children didn't play together much, even at school the two went their separate ways yet remained friends.
Steven's first in school friend and the first friend he had ever made that was a boy like himself, was named Tommy, the young son of a prominent lawyer in the small town. While Steven's shyness and for the most part inability to speak full uninterrupted sentences around the child filled classroom lead several kids to start to pick on him, Tommy was the first one to come to the kid's defense and, from then on a great bond was formed, one that would withstand verbal bullying, physical fights and of course the normal dumb things kids get into fights with their friends about: No matter what Tommy and Steven would wind up being friends within a week maximum. Tommy would partner up with Steven for assignments like class presentations, book reports or anything else given that required speaking before the entire class and, while Steven would be allowed to hold the diagram or point to the currently important parts of the posters the children would make together, Tommy would explain each thing as it came up. Steven loved these chances because he still got the marks and didn't have to talk publicly.
Though Tommy was around as much as he could be, eventually kids will be out sick and during these days Steven would be miserable! The older kids, or even those in his own grade that bullied he and Tommy normally would have only him to focus on, him to target as Tommy was home and vice versa when Steven was out sick. It wasn't as bad getting picked on when you had a friend to back you up, a friend who knew what you were going through and who could understand how you felt, talk to you about how you felt and help you fight back: Though fighting back when it was older kids against two tiny boys (Steven was abnormally small as a child.) or when there were 2 of you and like four or five of them wasn't always bound to work.
Of course Steven's parents knew what was going on, knew about the bullying and had done their best to make it stop, going to the school several times when it would happen. ;Sometimes the bullying would stop and other times it would get so so much worse but, both boys had been told that it was possible the bullies didn't have good home lives while they had loving parents, maybe they were just acting out because it got them attention? They sort of understood that idea though not entirely. Then there were those time where the bullying would be left alone by the school because "Boys will be boys." logic.
Around fourth grade the best friend duo would be introduced to the new kid, a girl named Lucy and she would quickly become part of their group, helping the two deal with the bullies and helping Steven with something he considered a hobby and loved to do, writing. The girl was quite the little writer herself and together the two would work on their English assignments, even helping Tommy with his as he was quite the opposite to Steven when it came to academics and personality as a whole. White Steven was quiet, nervous, a skilled writer but horrible at match and science; Tommy was loud and upbeat, talkative and rocked at math and science. Their strengths and weaknesses complimented one another's perfectly: Lucy was, luckily for both boys pretty well good at all of these subjects, save for social studies.
During some of his weekends Steven would have chores to do, well he had chores to do every day but every second weekend of the month Benjamin would head off to drop of a new batch of starters to the lab and Steven would go with him. During these times and once the task was done the Grayson men would go to football game if there was one, or simply do fun father son bonding. Those weekends were some of the best ones Steven ever had. Other weekends he would either stay at home and invite Tommy and Lucy over to hang out, or go to one of their houses; rarely was there a weekend when the boy didn't at least have something to do. However, eventually all children turn 10 and his friends were no exception.
For every kid in the rural town, there were at least a few whose parents couldn't take the time off work to drive them the two hours away to the Pokemon Lab to get their starter Pokemon and so, a deal was struck with the lab where some of the starters would either be shipped back to the Grayson' family, or some to be delivered later that month would remain behind, be written on a list and the couple would go as liaisons of the Pokemon Lab and head into the elementary school's fifth grade class. A list of each student who had already or would turn ten by that particular day would be given and each kid would get to pick their starter there. Photos would be taken of the child, papers filled out of which class they wanted to be and what pokemon that had chosen and then, when the left over starters were brought to the lab, the paperwork would be filed and then, upon returning to the school the trainer, breeder or coordenator IDs would be handed out to each respective child.
Lucy was one of these particular students and, much to her best friends' glee they had gotten to watch her pick her Squirtle; Steven had even gotten to be the one to show off the starter options. Then Tommy had gone off to the lab to get his own starter, his mother had free time. This left Steven, now ten years old and not on his journey yet. Partially because he was too nervous to start back then, and because his parents weren't sure eh was ready for that kind of solo thing.
The boy was nervous, socially awkward and not very good at remembering to do things people needed to do like take baths regularly, make absolutely sure he had food that would last him hopefully long enough to get form one town from the other, and do laundry. Sure, he was great at taking care of the Pokemon of the farm, a very hard worker and good with plants but he wasn't responsible when it came to his own care, at least not yet. Alongside this the child was awful at confrontation, letting people push him around very easily and frequently and he didn't want to have that happen if he went on a journey of his own. Sticking to his home and school lives for the time being Steven had a very hard time adjusting to attending school without both of his friends and had a very hard time making new ones. Though most of the bullies he had to deal with had gone off to their own journeys just as Tommy and Lucy had, some had remained behind because they either didn't want to do journeys yet, their parents wouldn't let them for another year or two, or had gotten their Pokemon but chosen to stay behind till the end of the school year. This left a few kids with pokemon to battle among themselves, trainer their Pokemon and catch the ones that lived in and around the town for the time being: Some of them deciding to target the little boy who was too scared to go on his journey, the one who had always been their target but this time... they had their Pokemon to help make his life harder.
With no friends remaining, even Anna having left, and bullies with Pokemon on his ass the young Grayson boy retreated into his writing and drawing, spending hours on end absorbed in whatever imaginary world he could create, hiding on the internet to post his poems and stories. Steven threw himself into video games as well and the work on the family farm. Most of his school life was bad, and his grades reflected this somewhat as his math and science grades were low, white his English grade, as well as those in any elective art classes were rather high. Anything in between was more average. While in his own mind his higher grades made up for the lower ones Steven's parents were less pleased as his math and science grades were low enough to make him almost fail the classes entirely, though he never did.
Throughout his school life, as the bullying worsened and his friends had left Steven had begun to work out, lifting small weights every day in hopes of getting strong enough to defend him, gaining a decent amount of muscle as a 12 year old. For there it wasn't a matter of being able to fight back, so much as getting the courage to do so which... well he just completely lacked. The attempts to join the football team were somewhat succesfull though that only happened in the last semester of his eighth grade year to the end of ninth grade, the boy quitting the team to help take care of his father when the man had gotten sick. He would help tend the farm, take the bus into down and pick up whatever supplies they needed if his mother was too busy to do so herself. And of course Steven would help take care of his father. Thankfully Steven's father would recover from his illness within six months though by this time his son would have already stopped his football participation. He had been the quarterback, much like his father had been in his younger days and the man was very proud of his son.
Financially the Grayson family wasn't as stable as they would have liked, at least most of the time. The farm as well as it's equipment were rather old, the farm having been in the family for generations, the equipment sometimes being on 20 years out of date. Sure, they got paid by the lab for the starter Pokemon they bred, had some Pokemon to help with the work like watering the vegetables and such, could sell a cow or two to a fellow butcher shop, But even still, to raise so many Pokemon you needed to have Pokefood, to have suitable barns or an abundance of Pokeballs, to fix said barns and Pokeballs if they ever broke, repairs to tractors and fork lifts and whatever other equipment the farm needed. Then of course there was just making sure their family had food and had their bills paid and medical bills. Sufficed to say the money they could manage to earn barely covered these things and sometimes couldn't do it at all. Bank loans were taken out, building a fairly nice debt.
Steven did his best to help with money, spending any and all money he did manage to earn from the righting contests he entered on helping his parents, paying off as many bills as he could manage, electrical, hydro, cable (cause he wanted cable d-darn i-it!) and buying the groceries their farm wouldn't produce itself. His parents at first had no idea, their Pre-teen son sneaking through, getting hte billing information from the mail and paying whatever he could of them via e-transfer though, it didn't take more the 2 bills getting paid, one completely paid off and one half paid before the couple noticed. Benjamin was not very happy about this situation for, while he appreciated his son's willingness to help the family out he thought it was unfair of them to take the boy's self earned money. Martha too didn't want their young son to have to spend his money on them. They hated to borrow money from neighbors, his father disliking owing other people and living in the mindset that it was their family's problem, not others and they should be the ones to fix it. Even borrowing or taking money from their son wasn't something the man wanted to do as the boy hadn't been the one to build the debt, to take out the loans and as such, he shouldn't have to use his own money to pay for his parent's mistakes.
For his twelvth birthday Steven found his parents had quite the surprise for their son; they had saved up what extra money they could manage to put away and tucked it away to buy the boy a very nice gift. Not only had they gotten him a Pokemon, But they had also gotten him a ticket to a Region rather far off from their native REgion. They wanted their young son to have a journey where he couldn't have to worry about helping them, to worry about what they needed... he needed some time to himself!
