Pokemon was always a funny sort of topic for Harper, the sort of conversation she often just tried to pass on if it was all the same to most.
It was just something that everyone in the whole wide world used to communicate with each other. Trainers supposedly even could speak without words, according to them. Harper didn't quite understand what you were really supposed to tell about people through a Pokemon battle other than "they like to battle with their Pokemon" which seemed a bit obvious, really?
But she did feel left out...
So it was often that Harper found herself occasionally filled with a drive to belong, as was normal for any sort of young person. These instances never really seemed to last too long, because she would inevitably run into a grumpy sort of Pokemon, or a trainer that was a bit too eager, or Max would freak her out in the middle of the night and.. then she would start to question what it was she was really doing. Was she always going to be out of place? Was there room for Pokemon in her life, or vice versa?
It was really only when her father left and she had felt so lonely and maybe a little less self-conscious that she finally got her own first Pokemon.
And she felt embarrassed about them. They weren't tough or big Pokemon that made loud noises and did cool attacks.. they were sweet little babies. Small and cute like her, and they didn't fight and maybe she thought that they made her seem especially silly. It was one of the many things that didn't help her seem grown up at all...
But they were so cute. And.. and.. she loved them, she thought... clinging to Togepi's form tightly.
It was these sort of thoughts that confronted her again, looking at Arcanine. Although Harper never ever needed a reason to feel small, standing next to a dog that was quiet a bit bigger than herself would do it. Like particularly tall people she had to look up, and it made her feel nervous. Plus she knew it was strong and had read her fair share of strange stories to feel anxious. She knew that it was wrong a little, the feelings that she felt. Pupper (an adorable name that was hard not to smile at) was being really nice...
But her breathing quick, she felt so scared when it licked her because she was so close to those teeth.. it was so big.. and and...
But she wanted so desperately to not be scared and tried her hardest to tap into these feelings. Even her Togepi had been brave and managed to be touched by the Luxray without seeming scared at all. Togepi was so pleased in fact and was just making all sorts of excited noises. Plus... Harper's fear was intimidating.. but she had an equally strong desire to share this moment with her new friend. To trust her and her Pokemon, because her new friend was so kind and seemed excited to share this with her.
She made an earnest face at Pupper, and spoke with all the mature authority of any kid trying her hardest to seem put together and grown up. "How d-do you do, Pupper! You're a good boy!" She reached out and only hesitated for a moment, before giving him a playful pet. She only wanted to recoil a little bit, but she didn't at all. Partly because after touching him she sort of understood what he meant... after shivering and crying there was something really lovely about the warm feeling she got just from touching him. She thought about what sitting on him would feel like.. hmmm~
The reaction the sweet dog would give her for giving him a pet would surely give her would make her smile just a bit too.
She turned to face her friend and nodded. "I want to ride him." Of course, as soon as she said that another thought entered her mind, which made her smile a bit more too. "Will you teach me? Do you think we could ride together, maybe?" The last thought was certainly appealing, although she didn't know if it would work. But the idea sounded so good. No reason to be afraid if someone else had the reigns, right? Y-Yeah.. then she wouldn't have to do stuff...
