ALEAL CITY
[Old Information]
Introduction & History 'The City Wreathed in Snow', Aleal is the northernmost city in Veria, but even that does not account for just how cold it stays. Due to occasional Articuno sightings, legends claim that the weather is the work of divine intervention-- a gift or curse to the land depending on whose story you hear. Built to last through the cold all-year-round, it is a functional if not as immediately fashionable city. All things serve a purpose in this frigid wonderland, but don't think that translates to a pragmatic population. The warmth given off by the Alealite people can keep you toasty on even the coldest winter days. The coast has been settled by Veria's native population for longer than has been recorded, but Aleal rapidly grew and became a full city after several waves of immigration occurred in Veria. As a port city, it also came to house quite a number of immigrants from all over the world, although of Veria's three ports it is the least busy. People who came as tourists often just stay for the fresh air and charming people. With such a quaint, peaceful atmosphere, what isn’t to love? |
Population & Culture The people here are friendly, welcoming, and kind. It is also famed with having the lowest crime rates in Veria and being one of the nicer places to live as a result. Special holidays like Christmas are wonderful occasions to behold in Aleal, and having the honor of putting a star on the city tree is a right held by few. Snow carving events are also popular. The city’s economics heavily weighs on ice fishing, logging, tourism, and greenhouse farming. They have an extensive harbor that, while not as stylized as Caravella’s, works all the same to bring in goods, as well as trading with Sinclair as it passes through. In the northernmost parts of the city and especially on some of the coastal islets, there remains a tribe of Verian natives that live in harmony with the more urbanized parts of Aleal. While many maintain their own customs and sense of sovereignty, trade with the mainland is common enough and some commute into the city for work. While some traditions are held as sacred and kept within the tribe, performed only on the islands and rarely before outsiders, others have been freely shared with the immigrant population to varying degrees and some even adapted jointly over time. |
City Structure Aleal is larger geographically than its relatively low population would lead one to believe. The coast is rocky in many places, leading to concentrated building around places where the sea is more accessible, and as one heads farther inland the city stretches in bits and pieces up into the foothills, with harsher or steeper parts of the mountain separating bits of the city in places. A few of the larger islets off the coast are also inhabited, primarily by the native tribe that still lives in the area. The inner city is rather plain made of tall stable structures without much aesthetic. Much of the city’s structure was bent around minimizing (or using in some cases) wind vortexes that can stir up in these frigid temperatures. One can traverse the town in many ways, but most prefer the warmth of cars and the well maintained bus routes that connect it. The more suburban and residual one gets, however, the more artistic the buildings start to become. Residential areas are known to show warmth and life; log cabins are common, and in general comfort is key. Natural beauty and conservation is a priority in the city. The air is clear, and the stars are bright. There are tunnels all through the outskirts that can be explored, though step lightly! The farther into the outskirts one gets, the less maintained structures are. Up in the mountains and in the caverns just south of the city, one can find various old ruins. |
Points of Interest The Aleal City Ice Gym is found on the edge of the city where it is maintained by Aurora Halloran. The Aleal City Rock Gym is located on the outskirts of the city dug into the mountainside; it is maintained by Ral Zurggo. A large attraction is the Bubble Hotels that feature a dome shape roof to look out onto the northern lights with. Nearby, the Diamond Dust Forest surrounds a good deal of Aleal. The propensity for diamond dust makes it a sight to be seen. Many Pokemon make their homes here as well. Beyond that is a cave system called the Crystal Coves that burrow into the mountainside. They start out as solid land on higher areas but become more soupy as one descends. There are many inlets that prove to draw attention for a multitude of reasons. |
