“Heh, you’re a sharp lad… My apologies for the attempt to deceive you, I did not wish to ruin a nice chat with a sad story?” Dropping all attempt to deflect the attention of the boy from the topic at hand once his bluff had been called, the corners of Joe’s mouth dropped a little way as he shifted a little from the relaxed position he in to sit forward a little way, leaning over his drink and taking a sip from it.
“Unfortunately, my own great love story did not end well… I had a wife and…” Swallowing the smoky tea in his cup before sharing some of his history in a fashion that seemed rather sombre compared to the light-hearted manner in which he had carried himself so far, the old man paused and found he struggled to add the word ‘son’ to his statement.
“…And while we were happy for a time, I got caught up in things that seemed so frivolous by comparison, and ended up losing both her and my happiness…” The loss of his little boy something that could still cripple him on the wrong day, as open as Joe wanted to be with the lad next to him, he just could let himself dwell too much on those memories. “She was a hell of a gal though, much better than an old fool like me deserved…” Finding his brow feeling rather heavy as he spoke, the old man glanced between the masked face of his companion and his cup of tea, whilst the silver maned man carried a small smile throughout his description it seemed to only highlight the sense of sadness in his story.

Niso sat and listened for the most part, afterall he didn't have much experience with loss...actually he did. He had two people he lost, but it wasn't exactly the same for starters, and it was a memory he'd managed to heavily repress by this point. Taking a slow breath as he listened, he narrowed his eyes behind his mask as he listened to the specific choice of words...his curiosity wanted him to know what the end of that one sentence was, but he'd been learning well enough that his curiosity could be a bad thing at times.
Shame that didn't seem to stop him from what came next.
『So...did they leave you or...』He spoke with very little emotion or empathy for his situation, drawing a thumb across his neck with a hissing sound to represent the alternate option.

“She uh… Yes. She left. Though in hindsight I think she made the right decision…” Nodding at the suggestion of the boy as a little more of his smile melted away, Joe’s eyes grew glassy and distant as he remembered the last time he had seen his wife, guilt making his heart grow cold as he felt a sense of regret at how things had ended.
“I was a real mess then… Not that my silver mane and shabby clothes really mean I’m not a mess now, but in a different way, you understand?” The intensity of the moment making him feel rather vulnerable, almost instinctively the old man felt the need to guard himself from things and flip-flopped between sad reminiscence and defensive playfulness.
“A different man, really… Hopefully these days I’ve changed for the better, even if my wardrobe hasn’t?” Eyes practically glazed over as he watched things from his history like the person he was now was in a cinema watching the details of his old life, after pausing for a second he blinked and then shook his head, that need for ‘protection’ winning out and making him laugh off the seriousness he had just found.

Niso sat quietly as he continued to listen, holding his mobile phone in his lap still and glancing down to it now and then as he waited for a response to his text, but still keeping enough of an eye on Joe to show he was interested in what he was saying. He was oblivious sometimes yeah but what Joe was saying hit an odd chord with him, even if he couldn't directly relate. Sera wasn't gonna leave him right? So long as he kept to the rule...yeah...just keep to the rule...~
『Hm?』 Caught off guard having briefly let himself fall into a daze, Niso needed to backtrack his memory to what was asked of him. 『Oh no you look cool!~』 The smile behind his mask evident in his tone, he was practically beaming, always finding those who stuck out from the crowd were the most interesting in their attire. All the same the smile dimmed a little, it didn't fade but...
『If it helps ya feel any better...I know it can't be easy. I don't think my girl will ever leave me but...』He lifted his phone, clutching it gently. 『I'm gonna lose her one day...I thought about it once and ended up crying. I don't cry. It dosn't happen...I did though...』Just a faint smile still in his tone, more melancholy even as he retraced those thoughts. 『Still...she's good...very good...and I'll always enjoy what I have...hey. Listen.』
Lifting his phone he left the text message and opened a tab he always kept up, pressing play on a sound file, Sera's voice coming out with a silly 'I looooooooove you~'
『Ain't she cute?~』

Going to lose her? Well, I suppose we eventually lose everyone we love… A little surprised to see that a young fellow like this could fall victim to fatalistic thinking, Joe frowned a little at the admission that his unknown friend made, sensing the fall in his spirits as he considered such downbeat notions. A boy his age perhaps shouldn't be quite so keenly focused on matters of mortality, though... The old man quickly forgetting his focus on his own problems as it seemed that this youngster needed a hint of a pick me up, he paused for a second and ran his fingers through his scruffy beard as he considered carefully the best words he could think of to help the boy rebound from his brief anxiety.
“Heheheheh… Well, it’s only a small window into her but if she sounds as sweet normally as she does there, I can certainly understand why you’re so head over heels for her?” Grinning at the recording that his young friend demonstrated, Joe nodded at the girlish affection in the recording and tried not to get too lost in reminiscing over times when he too had heard a young woman speak so adoringly to him.
“Unfortunately, the finality of things is something that none of us can really avoid, no matter how we want to…” Gently shaking his head at the insecurity his masked companion showed, the silver haired man had learned a rather hard but valuable lesson about focusing on things beyond ones own control. “All things come to an end, but that only makes the moments we have with them now more precious… Take it from a sorry old man like me that you’ll be a lot happier loving what you have today than lingering on what you may or may not have in future? It is the only way to do justice to the gift that is the present…” Offering up to the boy a smile that showed my sincerity than the foolish grins he usually flouted, Joe nodded gently at his message and turned the cup he held around in his hands, before sinking down what was left of his tea and leaving it empty…

Maybe it was a bit early for anyone else in their technical twenties to be thinking about death and the like, but oddly enough for Niso, now that he didn't have to fear it anymore, he was thinking about it a fair bit more. Just not in terms of himself. He'd once spent a day ranking his aquiantances in the order they'd be most likely to die. Dorian went first of course, the chaotic fool wasn't immortal and was as reckless as him. Mia was healthy but reckless too...but he'd put Nik before her. Though really that may have just been him being hopeful.
In reality Orion probably came before either of them, but he liked Orion, so he preferred not to take that into account.
『Well even if all things come to an end I'll at least have the...'delight' of seeing it happen.』He smirked faintly under his mask before shrugging. 『You're right though...aaaalways better to live in the present.~』

Delight? Joe finding himself slightly unsettled by the choice of words that his young friend used, he shook his head gently and chalked the notion down to a simple misinterpretation. Preferring to assume that the boy had meant something like he would enjoy the experience of getting to the ‘end’ he had mentioned, the old man lifted up the little stove he had used to make his tea now it was cool enough to grasp and set about stowing it away.
“Well, the luxury of living so long is the growing chance that you might be right about the odd thing once in a while…” Happy to hear that at least one of the messages that he had given this masked lad seemed to have settled into him, Joe chuckled and as seemed to be his custom made a light joke about the matter to playfully deprecate himself. Not one who tended to need his ego stroking often or at all, the silver maned geezer felt little pride or accomplishment in being correct, but hoped his words might help people when they needed them to.
“Though now that I’ve caught my breath and had a drink, with some regret I must say that we approach another ‘end’… Tired legs probably won’t make the journey back to Alto as speedily, and as nice as it is to chat with a friendly young man like yourself even I can’t spend my whole day resting…” Letting out a small sigh as he finished tucking away his kettle and cup and buried them in the spare clothes and towel he tended to carry as a matter of course, Joe lifted up his bag and gave a groan as he pulled himself up as well.
“It was nice to meet you, lad… I hope you enjoy the time with your little partner~” Sliding the pack onto his shoulders with a slight sigh before offering his hand to the stranger with whom he had shared a small but largely rewarding little break, Joe looked toward the Mimikyu who his friend had brought to this park before glancing toward the horizon as he prepared himself for another hike…
