Sam AldersWith Gidget out sailing on some research expedition for a few days now, Shaun had some time to focus on his own jobs without the distraction of a hot ass babe parked right next to his boat. Of course this time would usually be spent diving for scrap in the deeper parts of old Pahalla, or fishing for some Pahallan fish, or even just sailing off to Caravella or Aleal to sell some fish for a better price. Sadly, it was not to be. While the old girl he made his home in was a ship he'd never let go, it was a ship that had it's fair share of problems, and while Shaun tried to look after it, there was only so much he could do with his limited book knowledge, especially when something that couldn't be welded together was what was beginning to fail. "Ah come on you piece of...GAGH!" Refusing to yell at the ship ever since Gidget had started acting like it had a soul, Shaun bounced the wrench he'd been using off the arm of his couch further into the ship, taking Ruck and climbing the ladder out of the ship, coughing as he made it onto the deck, and against the clean air it was suddenly very clear how much smoke he'd been breathing as it started to pour out of the ship, the sailer having to grasp the edge of the ship and just cough his lungs out for a solid minute to make sure he could breathe. Fucking...he'd JUST recovered from his christmas expenses! He could not afford a mechanic who was gonna rip him off! Maybe someone from his band would know of someone but...even then this was gonna suuuuuuuck.

BREATHE IN THE MOUNTAIN AIR AND LOOK DOWN UPON THE WORLD It'd been a relatively long day for Sam, but thanks to the cold weather, it could be a little less stressful. With a baggy hoodie on and a tired expression on his face, he had taken up residence on the edge of the docks with a foot hanging off, the other folded under the other leg. Zephyr let out a low yawn, the Zangoose having been glued to his side all day. With him there, things were ok. And Sammy continued calmly sitting on the docks until the smell of smoke from a failed engine took over the salty air he'd been breathing in. Eyebrows raised and the Cat Ferret's hackles raised, Sam watched the ship carefully, just about to call out to the dinky boat until someone finally came out. Jogging down the docks a little further and over, Sammy yanked their hood down and slow to a stop. "Hey are you alright?!"He took a moment to watch the other person before looking at the smoke. It was a smell they knew all too well. With a slightly concerned look, Sammy knew that a lot of people around here were fisherman, and it was obvious that this was a fishing boat. It wasn't in the greatest condition too, so it was either very important to this person, they were broke... or both. But hey! If it floats and doesn't leak it works! Looking back to the person with another nod, Sammy spoke up. "Uh, smells like the engine quit. I mean, I'm an engineer and the boats me and my friends used to get back and forth to Cinnabar tended to nearly catch fire as well every time they were started. I can take a look at her and fix her up for you if you'd like ma'am. Free of charge."If they didn't offer now, they'd probably forget or end up backing down. Looking at the old dinky truck down the way, parallel parked and looking like an eyesore, Sammy took a moment. Yea, they had all their tools with them. Locked up in the toolbox on the back of the truck! Shaun Underwood

Still coughing up a lung as the young guy approached his boat, Shaun focused on clearing out his lungs first before taking anything they were saying in. His vision a little blurred from the brief oxygen depirvation, he narrowed his eyes as he hunched over the railing of his ship's deck, trying to catch the eye of them but probably actually staring like a solid foot to the left of their head in an effort of meeting their eye. It took him a second to get what they were saying, but a free bit of engine work? He'd normally find that suspicious if he wasn't in a bit of a desperate situation. Afterall he-DID THEY JUST CALL HIM MA'AM!?
"Oi! That's sir to you ya little shit!" As his vision cleared up a little, he leaned further over the rail, eyes narrowing further and snapping his words a little as he added. "I bet I'm the same age as you! Little cunt...!"
Despite the biting response to being called Ma'am, seriously, he wasn't that old, not even close, he did need someone to work on the ship...with a slow, coughing breath, he shook his head and moved to the boarding point of his ship, kicking down a plank onto the dock. "Look...sorry not too clear headed right now...you wanna take a look at it, be my guest..." If Sam was still willing to get on the ship, Shaun would cross his arms, narrowing his eyes as they walked up the plank. "...I seriously look like a 'ma'am'? Like, Miss, yeah, but MA'AM!?"

BREATHE IN THE MOUNTAIN AIR AND LOOK DOWN UPON THE WORLD When the person bit at him, Sammy instinctively shrunk back just a little bit. That was an accident that could've been avoided and they just walked right into it. Wishing they could disappear into their jacket, Sammy's Zangoose picked up on his emotions and stood on his hind legs, deadpanning up at the person on the ship.
Neither one of them bit back or growled though, as just like they should've expected, the person clarified that they themselves weren't too clear headed for the moment. Coming out of their jacket a little bit, Sammy stepped over to the plank and up onto the ship, his Zangoose following close behind, just out of range of being kicked by Sam's heels. "Sorry miss. Just a force of habit." They corrected quickly when the opportunity presented, looking at the smoke that was remaining inside the boat itself. Luckily for Sam, he was only 5'5, so ducking under all of it would be easy.
"If there are any windows that can open, you think you can get them open to try and get the place ventilated a little. I'm gonna make a quick run to the truck to get some tools and what not." And a flashlight just in case. After making the observation that the place was currently too dangerous to try and work in without getting the place vented a little bit, Sammy went ahead and stepped off the boat and towards their truck, hopping into the back of it and kicking open a smaller, empty tool box to fill with what they think they'll need.
Guessing the tools needed by the style and size of the boat, it wasn't long before they were hopping out of the rusted bed of the truck and onto the ground with a heavy tool box hefted onto one shoulder. Sammy's Zangoose waited patiently at the start of the dock, and followed Sammy quietly, taking the flashlight when passed to him. "Ay Zephyr. Think you can hold that for me while I work?" Usually he'd just hold the flashlight in his mouth, or have someone else hold it for him, but he wasn't sure how much room the engine compartment would have to fit two people comfortably.
Once they made it back to the boat, Sam held out the hand that wasn't supporting the tool box on his shoulder in an offering for a hand shake. "M' Name is Sam by the way." Introductions were important, and he'd been rude enough to go and forget to do this important step.

"You little-!" Still a bit agitated, Shaun's anger spiked when the randomly appearing mechanic mistook his gender again, but he managed to bite his tongue. He'd supposed he'd set that one up by saying he should at least be a miss. With a long, heavy breath to calm himself as Sam took the first look around, he held his hands up and slowly brought them back down in a physical effort to get himself to cool down. "Sir. It's sir. Not Miss, and ceeertainly not Ma'am. Sir. Please and thank you." There may have been a bit of bitterness still, but he was doing his best to behave and not piss off the person who could fix his boat, nodding along to his instructions and, covering his mouth with a cloth, ducked back down beneath deck, opening any of the windows that weren't half covered in water, the smoke billowing out a bit slower, but at least out of multiple holes now.
As Sam came back, Shaun would be waiting on the deck, Ruck, his wingull, flying down from the sky where he'd gone to clear his head from the smoke and landing on top of Shaun's head, the bird and Sailor looking to the Zangoose and mechanic as they returned.
"Name's Shaun...sorry again for biting just...this was NOT what I wanted to wake up to today." Ruck gave a loud squawk as he flexed his wings to greet the mechanic.

BREATHE IN THE MOUNTAIN AIR AND LOOK DOWN UPON THE WORLD Sammy stared at Shaun for a moment until the realization dawned on him. 'that's sir to you!' oh. oh. He had been so flustered from the sudden snap that it had completely passed his skull. Sam stared for a moment with a slack jaw and wide eyes before blinking. "Ah shit! Sorry! I just." He gave up there immediately and dropped his hand and looked at Zephyr hoping he could help, but the cat just yawned.
"I'm sorry Shaun." They apologized properly, before waving a greeting to Ruck and moving over to drop down below deck, heading down to the engine room now that the place was less dangerous than it had been. Sammy could relate to waking up to your shit not wanting to start. That old rink-a-dink truck parked outside gave Sammy troubles almost every morning. Almost all of that truck was made up from rigged parts because he just couldn't afford a new truck. They don't make parts for it anymore anyways.
Stepping down into the engine room, Sammy started bravely reaching in-between the gaps to check to see if anything was loose, first of all. "Well. Firstly, this shouldn't be too hard of a fix." Sam spoke up, moving to start looking around the rest of the engine, eyes squinting and body moving slowly with practiced movements to make sure he didn't up and burn his self. "And secondly, how much is this engine used?" He didn't know the exact problem, but the problem could be something as simple as bad oil.

"It's fine mate just...yeah. First few mistakes are fine, just no more and we're good." Nodding along as he followed them down into the boat, the fishing boat had clearly been re-rigged into a makeshift home, with extra welding on the hull, and wires taped to walls before dissapearing behind some welded in panels. Shaun rested his ass against the arm of the couch which could still give him a good view of the engine, dipping his head down a bit so he didn't have to breathe in the smoke as much.
"How much do I use it...er..." Shaun's eyes dipped to the battery system powered by the engine, which in turn ran the lights, the TV, the electric cooker...even if those didn't exist, he took the boat out daily looking for scrap, fish, or sailing to a diving spot. Plus the heat the engine generated kept him from freezing in the winter... "Near constantly. If its off its just cause I'm not here. Least this time of year. Sees a little less use in the summer when it's not as cold."
(sorry forgot it was my turn)

BREATHE IN THE MOUNTAIN AIR AND LOOK DOWN UPON THE WORLD Sammy worked with a red face, but didn't say anything else about their slip up, and instead, laid down so they could reach their arm into a tighter space, looking through the smallest gaps he could, taking note of everything. "Reasonable. How often do you change the oil?" They asked, pulling their arm out carefully to avoid burning themselves, they moved to check the back of the engine.
They looked over all the different bits and pieces, checking the smallest areas for cracks. Looking up at the color of the remaining smoke, shining a light into it, he took note of the black color and went to check the exhaust one more time before moving back to the intake.

Shaun was feeling a little nervous, thinking about how much he relied on the engine for everything he did and even just the fact he needed it to practically survive in the winter unless he managed to find a friend's place to crash at. Which...honestly wouldn't be too hard thinking about it, but it hurt his pride a little to consider the possibility. At the question he managed to pull himself from the thought, thinking for a moment. "Er...my-" His words halted, about to mention his father but instinctively rejecting the mere mention of him. "The er, the guy I got it from said to change it once every 3 months. I know I overuse it though so I aim more for once every 2 months. Bit of a hassle keepin' up with it sometimes, but Its my home. Gotta make sure it's in tip top shape right?"
He slid up beside Sam, careful not to get in their way but also trying to see whatever they were looking at, hands in his pockets as he leaned over the engine. "So er...lets say this thing is knackered...'ow much ya think a replacement'd be?"

BREATHE IN THE MOUNTAIN AIR AND LOOK DOWN UPON THE WORLD Sam finally stood up, careful not to bump into Shaun as they stood up with the swaying of the boat. "Well the good news is, I don't think you'll have to pay for any parts to fix it if it is what I think it is." Not bothering to dust themselves off, they disconnected the air filter and double checked it, tapping any caught dust in it free from it's trap. Then carefully, they looked inside and reached in just a bit to check for any obstructions. Replacing the filter, they moved to the back to check the exhaust and voila. Sam actually started laughing. "Looks like fate or whatever you believe in just wanted to play games with you." Standing up, Sam held out a handful of clumped up dirt and dust. "Sometimes in marine engines, if someone relies on them, they suck in a lot more moist air with salt and dust than usual. You probably had quite a bit built up somewhere difficult to reach and it all just came loose." Sam reached and played with the edges of the clump a bit. a good part of it was hardened, a good part of it was soft, but well bonded. "It was just a freak accident." They clarified, dirty hand still holding out the dust. Shaun UnderwoodJust thought a freak accident would be funny

Shaun pushed off the wall he'd been leaning on, resting an arm against a lower part of the boat's structure to peer over the work Sam was doing and the engine itself. He was no genius with all this but the explanation Sam gave seemed clear enough, and as the hunk of muck was presented to him, Shaun almost felt like a twat for not finding that out himself.
"Ah fuck really? Well I'm glad you did this and not some over-charging wanker in overalls..." With a heavy sigh and shaking his head, Shaun looked around and grabbed a trashcan, holding it out for Sam to drop the muck in, and starting to go around closing windows, keeping one open to make sure all the air was cleaned out still. "You need a cup o' tea or anything? Early day beer? Least I can do since you fixed me up."

BREATHE IN THE MOUNTAIN AIR AND LOOK DOWN UPON THE WORLD "Those overcharging fucks can't even rig their own fixes. Always gotta go by the book." Sam huffed, obviously adverse to having someone else do their work for them by the tone. That or they just strongly dislike repairmen. Dropping the clump of muk into the garbage, they wiped their hands off of their pants, which were already stained with oil to begin with.
"An early day beer sounds good. I'm stuck at these docks waiting for someone that may or may not show up so." They shrugged, helping the other shut the windows. They couldn't imagine living on a boat this size, he was used to having at least some sort of work space to engineer. But it just made him respect the people that could tolerate living in these spaces even more.

Shaun nodded along at the request for a beer, ducking beside his couch and rooting around in the mini-fridge, the beers were still fairly chill despite the engine issues since he kept a bag of ice in there too, and tossed a twist cap bottle across towards Sam,making sure they had their eyes on it before throwing it in the first place to make sure they could catch it. "One beer, one engine fix. Seems like a fine deal to me.~"
Popping their own beer cap and taking a nice deep swig of the alcoholic beverage, he sank his ass into the couch and patted the empty space. "Know you gotta keep an eye out but they can call ya if they show up ay?" With a smirk as he started to relax, crossing one leg over the other, Shaun got nice and comfy as he continued to enjoy his drink. "You aren't waitin' for a lass called Gidget are ya? She parks next to me, pretty fancy boat like that might need some upkeep but I got 'er number if its them."

BREATHE IN THE MOUNTAIN AIR AND LOOK DOWN UPON THE WORLD Sam walked and ducked out of the engine room, eyes looking around the ship for a brief moment before looking over to catch the bottle tossed their way. "A classic kind of deal at that. I can settle for this." Even though they really didn't mind doing it for free, they were going to be bored off of their ass waiting, anyhow.
When they were invited to sit on the empty space, they gladly obliged, sitting down easily while his Zangoose sorted and carried his tools to place them next to Sam's boot, curled up between his feet once the job was done. "They can call me yea." They answered with a nod, twisting the cap open and taking a drink as they relaxed back into the seat just a little more.
"Nah. I'm waitin for an ole' friend of mine n my dad's. We accidentally left some stuff back home n' they're bringin it to us." It was the truth, but they really couldn't delve into what the contents of the package was. Though there was a mention of a fancy boat needing upkeep. Probably another person he could potentially help if his own friend decided they would take forever and longer to get here.
It really depended on the seas though. It shouldn't be too difficult though and as Sam took another drink, they furrowed their brows. "The patchwork looks pretty good on the outside of this boat by the way. Do you do the welds and patchwork yourself?" It was a stupid question in a way, considering most people, who's home is literally floating on a watery grave, knew how to take care of their own home. Just like how his dad had taught him how to patch up a failing floor and many other maintenance and carpentry tricks.
It just came with the field.

Well that was good news in a way. Gidget was a cool gal so if he'd learned she needed someone looking at her boat he'd be a bit worried it was gonna sink on her or something. If the guy was just waiting for a friend it'd be pretty easy to just wait in his boar and enjoy a drink too, Shaun even pulling one of his legs over his knee to get comfortable as he leaned back into the couch a little. The comment about leaving stuff at home though-
"You from Pahalla? Or outta region or?" Both were viable and it left room for more of an explanation, shrugging casually. Afterall Pahalla was a coastal city, and Sam was waiting by the docks so it made sense if he was waiting for someone from over-seas or something. Not everyone shipped stuff by air mail, and tools sounded like something that might not be too easy to get through airport security, even on delivery flights.
As for the question aimed at himself, he scoffed softly. "Yeah yeah, no need to humor me. I know I do a crap job from the outside, but trust me, as shitty as it looks this thing keeps afloat, which, given it's well over 15 years old, is something for me!~"
