Luke glanced back offering a small nod and a smile. "Pokemon are more in tune with nature than us." That was pretty much a matter of fact. "Pokemon like Lucario and even Cutiefly can see the life force of everything around them. Pokemon like Meganium can breathe a bit of life into deadened plants. It's… no wonder that they intuitively know things that scientifically we have to discover." And then there's Nilly who can see the light of Ultra Aura without a detector… A weird… almost… laugh? Reverberated through Luke, and he realized it was Nilly's response to such thoughts. "It's … pretty amazing."
Lifting up some clippers from a lower shelf, Luke took a bit and then buried the rest. "This should be enough. We'll need to take some clippings from a couple of other plants in here in order to reduce some of the side effects…" He had… been definitely working with mixes as of late, but that was still an ongoing part of research at the end of the day. At least those were easier harvested through the leaves of some of the plants including the hanging one Jemma had touched.

fill your lives with love and bravery And you shall lead a life uncommon Jemma listened and nodded. Pokemon were definitely amazing. She was happy to have quite a few wonderful ones in her life. Buster in particular. Her father had given her the blue-hued Girafarig when she was a young boy because it may not have been a dog but at least it wasn't a fairy. The psychic-type always cared for her, even as "Stephen" became "Jemma". As he remarked that he had enough and that they needed to gather more from other plants, the blonde turned to look around. "Side effects," she remarked. It wasn't a questioning tone, per se, but thoughtful. Of course she was sure there would be some, but she wasn't concerned about them very much and hadn't put a lot of thought into them. "Anything I can help gather?" She wanted to help as much as she could. The whole process was... actually kind of fun for her. Learning new things was great, but just being able to actually help someone made her feel good about herself. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0

Luke's lips twitched up as Jemma spoke, and a small nod was given. "Take a couple of the leaves from that hanging plant, its common name is Black cohosh and is used in arthritis remedies for humans and aging Pokemon," he directed before going over to another plant and starting to carefully trim some of the flowers. A few more explanations of what was needed came and went. Luke even showed Jemma how and where to cut certain plants to keep from damaging them too much. He wouldn't even register that this was costing time, as the entire experience was so … comforting in a way.
After this, however, he'd finally ease back. "That should be everything," he mumbled, walking over to the table and fishing up a small basket to put it all in before finally covering it. "A lot of these we could get by with just crushing into the eventual mixture that then bakes into a cookie, but some require a little extra processing- if… you're interested in learning that?" He ask-stated.

fill your lives with love and bravery And you shall lead a life uncommon Being very careful to follow instructions, Jemma helped as well as listened to everything that the professor said. She was in no way concerned about how much time was being eaten away because this was part of the experience for her. Although she came to Luke for the end result of the cookie, she fully expected this sort of thing. Maybe not how happy he was to teach her or how delighted he seemed to just have someone that genuinely wanted to learn what he was teaching, but... it was all so fascinating to her and just having him be willing to tell her all these things, let alone help. Jemma certainly wasn't one to even think of stealing, but it seemed Luke trusted her. Knowing the whole process and whatnot would possibly make it easy for someone like her to sell the recipe to an underground market... or worse yet, steal some of the ingredients... For a spy, it was nice to be treated this way in a genuine fashion. "Really?" Although she almost felt like a broken record, she was just so delighted that he let her be so involved. "I'd love to," she assured, looking very much like an excited child who wanted to help bake grandma's cookies. - #211. - - Luke Indigo. - - notes. - Sorry for taking so long, hun. The thought that Jemma could or would steal such trade secrets didn't even come to mind to Luke. As a Professor, as a teacher, rather than say a corporate scientist, he had more freedoms to share. This kind of information could only do good for the world, and even if someone else learned how to make and propagate the Chroma Cookie, it meant more people would have access to it at the end of the day. Granted, it was hardly just the plant itself that was so valuable, not that Jemma could know that just yet.
That was, indeed, the processing. Luke perked up quite a bit as Jemma spoke. Yeah? "Great," he answered a bit too promptly and a bit too excitedly. Sure, some of his lab students now knew of the process, but they had more training in just about everything by comparison to Jemma. They knew what chromatography was and how it worked. They knew the protein and active chemicals that were most useful in the Switcheroot were positively charged and why they were positively charged. Jemma didn't, and this was…. probably more exciting than Luke could adequately put to words. "Let's head back down then."
The lift back down and into the lab went smoothly, and the elevator ride back into the research part of the lab was just as easy. Setting down all of what he had gathered and starting to separate out the various plants again, Luke fished up the root portions that he needed and offered a grin. "First we crush the root itself up and subject it to some separation media," he explained shifting to fish out a clean pestle and mortar. "The crushing isn't too hard, but you need to be gentle." He set the root down inside and pressed down on the pestle gently before moving it in a slow circle. "Here, give it a try."

fill your lives with love and bravery And you shall lead a life uncommon The blonde offered a delighted smile in response to Luke's own excitement. She could kind of tell that he was enjoying this. It must be nice to have a civilian show such interest, even moreso than his assistants. After all, it wasn't as if she'd studied for this sort of thing, it was just... interesting. She followed after as they headed back down and to the area where he'd work his magic. Watching carefully as he began to explain and work on mushing up the root, she would nod her head. As he offered for her to try, she looked a little uncertain. She didn't want to mess it up, after all... but after a moment, she nodded her head and gingerly took the pestle. Taking a breath, she reminded herself, "Gently." Then she started to press into the mortar, spinning the pestle in her hand carefully before pulling back. At first, it would probably be a little too delicate and no progress would really be made, but she could see that she wasn't doing any real good and start to apply more pressure. Still, she was slow and steady as she tried to figure out just the right amount of pressure and force she'd need to get the root crushed up, expecting Luke to let her know when it was enough. Luke watched Jemma's motions carefully, drawing over the way she held the mortal and pestle to how the grounds were looking. She seemed to have a good grasp on the residual motions, something he might have vaguely attributed to her waitressing motions if he'd known her better, and as things became even and nice, he'd nod a bit to himself and to her. Good, this was looking good. "Alright that should be enough," he commented with a small nod.
Shifting around, he pulled open a drawer, frowned, pulled open another drawer, and frowned a bit to himself. "Holly can you make me up a buffer, about pH of 7.5 or so?" he called. Holly sighed from whatever she had started to do but gave a quick "alright" before moving to do that. Luke, meanwhile, looked back at Jemma.
"A pH buffer is a solution that we can use to suspend the active ingredients and separate out the excess parts of the root. The "pH" component of solutions that denotes how acidic or basic it is. Heavy acids are things that degrade material, but weaker acids may be like the sharp taste of apples or the citrus. Heavy bases also degrade material, but weak bases include things like milk. Buffers keep a solution from randomly becoming too acidic or basic. We don't want to harm any of the chemicals and proteins, the active components, so buffers help us keep them safe." He would explain any of the terminology that Jemma didn't know and answer any questions she had immediately.
Holly, meanwhile, was quick to wander back among the solutions and make up a rather large flask of the correct buffer with the correct pH. Capping it with parafilm, she came back around and set it on the table.

fill your lives with love and bravery And you shall lead a life uncommon Jemma nodded, smiling, as she stepped back away from the mortar and set the pestle down. Looking up as Luke called for his assistant to help out, she looked a little curious. She knew a little about pH through generic schooling, but his explanation was much more in-depth and she was careful to listen to everything he'd said. If she were being honest, she probably wouldn't remember that part, but it was still fascinating and she was happy to have him teaching her. Once Holly delivered the buffer, she offered a smile and a, "Thank you, Holly." Then she would look to the container and to the mortar and then to Luke, waiting for more instructions. Could she help with this part too or would this part get easily messed up? Either way, she was interested in how it was done. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0

At the thanks, Holly offered Jemma a small grin. "No prob, bob~" she answered with a small two-finger salute. "I can show you how to make them yourself sometime." It wasn't hard, just tedious. Luke, meanwhile, was sort of explaining as he moved along, grabbing a smaller flask to put the contents of the switcheroot into before filling it to a leveling mark with buffer and recapping it for later. He instructed Jemma to swirl the flask a bit and gave some other explanations of buffers and their uses in the meantime.
Once that was done, however, the sonication process actually needed to be done to break open those more stubborn cells. Luke grabbed a bucket of ice and then had Jemma burry the flask in said ice before moving over to the sonicator and showing how to set it up. He went on an extensive explanation of what it was and why even with certain crushings, they weren't getting all the chemical that they could and how the sonicator could be used for that. "It does take up to two hours to finish, so if you want to do something in the meantime, I… could show you other things in the lab?" Luke offered. Arceus, he was already too invested in showing what could and could no be done in this magical place of a lab, heh.

fill your lives with love and bravery And you shall lead a life uncommon The blonde giggled at the other woman and looked thoughtful at the offer. "Maybe. I would love to help more around here, after all." If learning how to create the buffers would be helpful, it seemed like something she could master without too much difficulty. Of course, how would she know? Doing as she was instructed after this bit of conversation, she was careful not to stir around the contents too much and eased the flask into the ice. As he explained the purpose of this machine, she looked a little dumbstruck as well as amazed. Such interesting things he used... Up to two hours? Sheesh... "Of course I'd love to see more! You have so many interesting gadgets and procedures. It's amazing that you can remember everything..." Of course, Jemma was a ditz most of the time so she had no room to talk, exactly. Luke beamed with a little too much pride as Jemma agreed to see more of the going-ons in the lab. Still, a small chuckle escaped from him as she spoke, and a hand reached to set itself on the back of his neck. "It's… mostly cause I've done each procedure so many times and made plenty of mistakes along the way," he answered with a tentative smile. "I've seen all kinds of mishaps and mistakes, so I know the procedures, tricks and trades by heart now."
A small snort escaped into the air from elsewhere in the lab, rand Luke's eyes cascaded sideways as Michael turned around. Luke frowned a moment before rolling his eyes and looking back to Jemma again. "But anyways… let me show you some of the different machiens and procedures we have…"
With that, he spent quite a lot of time walking Jemma through the various machines and mechanisms. He stopped Stewart and Michael a couple of times and had them explain their own personal projects and work right before Holly interjected and started a longer explanation of her own studies and interests. Again, it seemed time got away from Luke as well as the lab (not that it was easy to tell what time it was in such a place with how the windows were and whatnot to begin with). Still, Michael's alarm would go off, and Luke would check the clock before gesturing Jemma back to the sonincator again.
Another quick explanation of how the cells were now broken up and their contents needed to be purified and processed before the cell's own contents would destroy them was given before Luke shifted the ice bucket and flask and directed Jemma over to a liquid chromatograph, a long column that he had described some time into the previous explanation. "And like I was saying, it'll separate everything out by density first, and we can then take the separate vile and run it through a similar column with ion exchange to get exactly what we want." Luke was explaining as he showed Jemma how to handle each of the columns and where to place what. This was… much more technical and required a careful inspection and assertion, but that was science for you.

fill your lives with love and bravery And you shall lead a life uncommon Jemma nodded in understanding. "Aah, I see. That makes sense." She'd chuckle softly at the interactions and proceed to follow around the lab with interest. Sure, it was possible that a lot of things, she just wouldn't understand but... still, the interest they all showed in their chosen careers was amazing. They were all so knowledgeable. Of course, if she really thought about it, she was pretty damn knowledgeable too, but that was food. This was science. All the mechanical and potentially hazardous components... The only thing Jemma had to worry about was dissatisfied customers. Luke and Holly and everyone here had to worry about ruining rare materials or possibly even explosions?! They did it happily, though. They wanted to better the world. This just made Jemma want to help them all the more, as much as she could... even if that wasn't a huge amount. Once they headed back to the sonincator, she was happy to just watch and only help when Luke asked. This was obviously more delicate and since she only knew what to do from his instructions alone, she wanted to keep her hands off it so she didn't make them wait another... three hours? "This must have taken a lot of time to perfect," she realized and commented aloud. How in the world did he figure out all these specific processes? When did he discover which part of the resulting liquid was the part he needed? This was... just so impressive. All she could do was offer suggestions to the customers and occasionally help make something delicious. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0

A small, weirdly breathy laugh escaped from Luke as Jemma made that kind of comment. "Yeah…" He'd set up the pump and get it running before actually getting back to her on that. The machine would run for itself passed that point. "I spent a week getting the first parts of the protocol together and then….the better half of… eight months? Perfecting it…" Among other things, Arceus damn.
Luke's eye glazed over for a second before he blinked had and shook his head. "I already had the training on how to use most of these machines from other experiments I did before I became a professor." That helped things, a lot, obviously. "But yeah… putting this together took… a lot of time and effort and work." And then a leap of faith or two that he was still vaguely shocked had worked.

fill your lives with love and bravery And you shall lead a life uncommon After this explanation, Jemma simply looked dumbfounded. That... was incredible. She had to imagine putting even eight hours into a new dish to serve in the restaurant and that was just... crazy. Eight months. Wow. "I knew you put a lot of work into this, but... that's really incredible. Even knowing how to use the machinery, having to figure out the right settings for the item you're using and... even finding how all the ingredients mix correctly... This is absolutely amazing."The woman just watched the machine do its work, still shocked by this whole thing. Then she'd look to Luke and offer a smile. "This region is lucky to have you here," she'd murmur. She was far too happy to have the opportunity he was providing. Actually, opportunities. Not only was he the developer of the Chroma Cookie, but he also was teaching her about things in his lab. It was amazing to be here. Exciting, even. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOXOGRAPHY 2.0

A small, weak smile curled at the corners of Luke’s lips as Jemma spoke again. It had been a lot of work. Many twelve to sixteen-hour days if not longer were spent there in the lab. Even when he finally had students and a lab manager, Luke was still so busy with his own curious niche of the science and put in more hours than anyone. Well… especially since his new side project of sorts had come about. Heh, at the very least it was fulfilling.
His gaze flickered forward again watching as the machine separated every single component by. They’d have another one that separated everything by charge eventually too but…. they were getting somewhere. Before he could say anything about all the work he had done like he vaguely planned to, Luke felt his features warm at Jemma’s compliment. W-wow. He… he didn’t even know what to say to that? A small, weird noise almost akin to a laugh threatened and broke down in his throat. “It’s… almost kind of funny but I didn’t… really intend to apply at first…but then it just sort of happened…” He smiled weakly before giving a small shrug. “My home region never had this kind of opportunity, so I just decided to go with it.” Now he was truly thankful for all the resouces that he had acquired.
