Weird, if he were to say anything about arriving in a completely foreign country. The sea smelt weird, the air felt weird, and the trees looked completely and utterly weird. It was weird how weird the place seemed. But it was best to keep an open mind if anything, he supposed. The Rattata at his ankles certainly did, what with it chasing it’s own tail in circles as if it were practicing Rapid Spin.
Gray clenched his palms around the railings, watching as the island came closer and closer to him. That was, until Rattata spun out of control and banged it’s head against a nearby wall of course. A small sigh came from the adolescent before he got down on one knee to lift up the Pokemon whose eyes rotated slowly in their sockets.
Once it recovered from it’s daze, it found itself being held against the railing gently.
The Rattata shook it’s head swiftly in an attempt to regain it’s bearings. When it next looked over, the boat was almost within walking distance of the docks. A small, high pitched squeak was made as it turned to face it’s trainer with eyes closed and a smile spanning ear to ear.
“Excited, huh?” Gray asked in his usual stoic manner.
Rattata let out a another squeak in return.
“Well, let’s get moving then.” He placed down the Pokemon and promptly walked off to retrieve his luggage.
When Gray next emerged from the cabin, he carried a suitcase with him. Almost as if to mimic it’s trainer, the purple rat-like creature carried a small sack on it’s back- it’s ends tied around it’s arms. His first few steps in a new region. Slightly less eventful than he expected the occasion to be, but better than something negative happening.
After going through all the necessary regulations, the young man began to wander around the docks. He had a few hours to kill before meeting a contact he set up, and for once in his life, he was unrestrained by the whims of his elders. Might as well look for something to do in the meantime.

Shaun had been snoozing into the late morning, only awoken by the blaring horn of the large ship coming into dock, rolling around in his bed. Had he slept with anyone last night? Probably not, but really with how quickly they tended to leave it was hard to tell. Similarly startled, Ruck, his Wingull, had begun flying around the room till Shaun sat up, perching on his shoulder as he started to wake up, groaning and stretching as he rose to his feet. Thankfully it was starting to get close to summer so he could dress a little more freely, already eyeing the torn jeans he'd left on the floor some nights ago and a loose tank top that had caught on the edge of the kitchen counter. His boat was pretty small so it wasn't hard to spot anything from his bedroom...
"Yo Poliwhirl! Get us some coffee!"
The Poliwhirl gave a salute from the kitchen and used a small set of steps to reach the coffee pot and get things going, Shaun getting haphazardly dressed and taking the coffee pot the moment it was ready, heading up to the deck of his ship and gazing out towards the horizon, wondering what was coming in..oh a transport boat? That meant there was probably a few people coming into the region...a few gullable, fresh faced trainers perhaps...~
Before long Shaun had set up a small stall on the docks and cluttered it with a few loose pokeballs of water types he'd yet to sell, and some random loot and scrap he'd found in the Pahalla ruins, trying to call out to the passing trainers with Ruck cawing at the passerbys from the top of the haphazard stall.
"Oi newcomers! Get your first Verian Pokemon for a reasonable price! I got water types, I got Pahalan loot and trinkets, heck if you're gonna be in town this weekend I even give diving lessons! All your money is welcome here!~"

Wandering around the Pahala City docks was rather uneventful for him. If nothing else, he did manage to spot a few trainers among the many scattered people who meandered around the vicinity just like him. He considered challenging them to a battle or two. Considered being the operative term as doing so would probably be a little more awkward and abrupt. That and also for the fact that random battles may cause unwarranted destruction to the area around them.
So he just kept walking around. Past a Pokecenter, past a Pokemart, past a Gym that he took a mental note to visit at a later date. If he wanted to just pass the time, he would have took out his DS. Awareness of his surroundings had to be up at an all time high if he wanted to make it out here.
When finally Gray thought there was nothing worth doing, Rattata pulled at the leg of his pants lightly. A cluster of faces were up ahead, gathered around a stall owned presumably by the person standing on top of it.
As good a time as any to see firsthand what the local market is like.
“Ooooooh, do you think this region has different, undocumented Pokemon?” A woman in the crowd muttered among the murmur of discussion to her companion.
“Doubt it.” He replied aptly. “If the number goes any higher than eight-hundred and god-knows-what, I’m going to get a migraine.”
It was a task in of itself to get to the front of the group- with or without a Rattata now hanging onto him by his left shoulder. He opted to remain silent for the time being. The wares present did not peak his curiosity in the slightest. Though if the twinkle in his Rattata’s eyes denoted anything at all, it would be a keen interest in whatever Shaun was currently selling.
As a result, it then clambered up and onto the shoulder to both sit and gain a better view of what was happening.

Shaun was a little surprised so many people had gathered around, but hey it was a good business plan. He of course had to explain when he said 'Verian Pokemon', he meant Pokemon caught IN Veria, not exclusive to the region. Some left dissapointed while others were already roped in enough to have their interest kept. Shaun managed to sell a few loose trinkets and even a Mantine or two to people who had heard of the recent surfing craze in Alola, and all in all business was going well. He might even be able to take a week off at this rate.
"Hm?" Feeling Ruck tug a little at his hair, he spotted the trainer and his Rattata moving to the front of the crowd, petting the bird softly. "Don't worry I'll get to 'em in a sec. Just finishing up here." He smirked and handed across a Pokeball to a woman. "Here ya go lass.~"
"Thank you Ma'am." The girl turned and walked away clutching the ball to her chest, Shaun looking a little annoyed however.
"It's sir actu-ah she's already gone." Looking to the close by trainer, Shaun grinned wide and rested his hands on the counter of the stall. "'ello mate! What can I do for ya?~"

Well this was certainly an odd thing for him to witness. Another weird finding to add to the list. Trainers that just bought their Pokemon from others- not uncommon in the slightest, but strange to him. Usually it was done by regular civilians, of which made up the majority of the customers as far as he could see, or those working in the black market, which may or may not have been there (Gray certainly could not tell). Though among them, he could spot the odd trainer or two.
Better to leave than stick around for too long while observing. Hence he did so. Or at least he would have done so if he had not been approached by Shaun in the first place. Well this was certainly unwanted and obviously avoidable social interaction. How was he supposed to explain being there if he had no intention of buying anything in the first place?
“Nothing, thank you.” Gray replied simply with a wave of his right hand in front of his chest. “I don’t buy pokemon.” Added the young man on shortly after.
Then the Rattata pulled lightly at his ear while pointing at the pokeballs.
He stared at it through the corner of his eye- unsure of what to proceed with or how to proceed in the first place. What was he supposed to do, read it’s mind?
“But, well…” Time to play the guessing game. “Would you like to have a pokemon battle with Rattata?” He asked, much to his Pokemon’s delight. It nodded it’s head vigorously in agreement.

Shaun was wondering why the trainer even got close if he wasn't interested in buying...buuut he did say Pokemon, and Shaun's eye traced to the other trinkets he was selling. "Wellll...I do have some old trinkets? Stuff from ship wrecks, the palhalan ruins. Think I even got a keystone somewhere..." He mumbled that last part as he opened up a lockbox, searching around his more valuable items before locking up the box again, tilting his head at the trainer and snickering at the Rattata on his shoulder, ultimately surprised by what soon came out of him.
"A battle eh? Not usually my scene but-Ow! Hey!" Ruck began to peck and nip at his ear, bringing a chuckle out of Shaun. Ruck was never the battling type either, but he seemed to want a chance to stretch his wings. "Alright, alright...we'll give it a go." He nodded back to the trainer. "Sure thing bud, sorry everyone, closed for ten minutes!" Some of the crowd grumbled but ultimately dispersed, Shaun gesturing for the boy to follow further along the dock where he'd parked his boat, and letting Ruck fly off his shoulder, landing between the two humans as Shaun turned on his heels, enough space between them to battle.
"Not often someone challenges me, but hey, how better to sell to trainers than to get in their heads?~ You wanna go first lad?"

This could certainly have resulted a far more awkward outcome. Though, keystone was something he had to see for himself later. Gently pulling down on the brim of his baseball cap to adjust it, the young man followed onwards as Shaun lead both him and the Rattata onwards. to a more open area. By this time, the crowd would instead flock to spectate the event. Maybe this battle was the last thing he wanted after all. Attention was not exactly something he held in high demand.
The Rattata leapt off his shoulder and onto the ground below, landing by his front paws first as it eyed down it’s winged opponent.
Gray was curious as to how this battle would turn out. So far, the purple rat was all that was seen on him. No need to send out any stronger Pokemon when this fight was not even warranted by him in the first place. No, it was more of Rattata’s battle for whatever reason it had. Maybe it just had something to prove to him. Maybe it was just arrogant.
Either way, he figured that it would be a win win situation for Shaun. Wingull beating Rattata could possibly result in the stall growing in popularity due to others seeing how strong the Pokemon is. If otherwise, not so much.
In any case, Gray obliged. “Rattata,” was all he said as he pocketed his hands.
With a nod, the air grew tense around his purple companion. Tiny flecks of light were carried away by the wind brushing off it’s fur. With a low rumble, the Pokemon was coated in a faint red glow. And just like that, it leapt up into the air in an attempt to sink it’s two front teeth into the Wingull.

Shaun stretches his arms back behind his head, sure he didn't actually have to move much himself for the purpose of the battle, but it was a good chance to do so while he was away from his stand, accidentally pushing out his chest to the point his tank top revealed a little bit of his stomache, but soon relaxing and letting out a soft sigh as he felt more relaxed. As he watched the trainer, he smirked in an odd way, watching how he seemed so disinterested in a battle...if this kid was a trainer he was one of those rarer, angsty kinds by the looks of things...ah well.~ "Ruck, do me a favor and keep out of that things way!" The Wingull cave a nod and took to the sky, it was small and frail, but it was fast, rising above the rattata with ease, Shaun issuing another command once it was safely in the air. "Now, super sonic, followed by an Aerial ace!" Ruck in the sky took a second to stablize himself, hovering over the Rattata and pelting down a super sonic screech at it's head, hoping the move would take effect before rushing in to slash with it's talons, coming down nice and low to get the attack in. Utilising the power of angst, Gray was able to deduce that deducing things without speaking in the middle of combat was probably not a good coaching method for Rattata. They say that wild Pokemon are often times a lot weaker than their trainer counterparts due to the bond and style forged by the Trainer themselves towards the Pokemon. In this particular scenario, he was doing a whole lot of nothing for his Rattata. The beginning of a battle rarely seemed dire enough for him to have to step in. Training the Pokemon was enough to warrant it knowing when to dodge or block. Therefore, it did- out of the way from where Ruck blasted out noise waves which in turn caused dust to stir off the affected pavement. However, this was to no avail. Caught in the sound waves, the Rattata’s eyes would begin spinning slowly once more as it did a little tippy dance around with his four feet. All the more vulnerable for the Wingull who then slashed it- sending it up and over to the side before the rat attempted to stand up slowly. Not the best situations for him, but far from the worse. It’s vision blurred and shook. Where the target was not did not come easily to it, but it still had to try. The Rattata leapt up once more and a nondescript white and blue bird to try and bite it. "Aw come on pal, you're little fellas all tipsy, not even gonna offer him some guidance?~" Shaun smirked, a little confidence despite never battling like this before, trusting in Ruck since luck seemed to be on the bird's side. Ruck himself was even chuckling in playful sqwuaks as it hovered in the air, a little too confident as the Rattata almost seemed to make a bite for it, before snickering and giggling as the Rattata face planted the deck instead, Shaun having to cover his mouth to be polite and giggling into it rather bluntly. "Oh shit that is funny!~ Ruck! Give 'em another pass with Aerial ace!" Ruck gave out a loud sqwuak and swooped in for another strike, talons out and coming in fast, blowing up the dust on the dock as it swooped past attempting to strike the dazed rattata again, clawing at it's side before taking to the air again, trying to put as much distance between itself and the dazed rat as possible between it's attacks, gracefully hovering in the air above it. Hushed whispers among the spectators created murmurs in the air around them. Some criticised Gray’s methods involving the battle. Some debated the sheer effectiveness of the vendor’s Pokemon. Others held random conversations that no bearing on this battle whatsoever. All of that was ignored by him. A single activity was present in his mind, and it did not lay in conducting the battle. He was observing completely how this would progress.
But he figured a small bit of advice could not hurt.
“Rattata, close your eyes and use your tail.” Gray said nonchalantly as if that had any sense at all in or out of context.
Yet it did. Rattata brought both it’s eye to a close. While it’s head continued to spin, it could feel the area surrounding it more clearly now. It’s whiskers were brought low while all four knees came to a bend. A mental image of it’s surroundings was painted in it’s mind. Air currents, vibrations, smells, sounds and more. Though all of it felt like a jumbled mess because of the state it’s mind was in, it painted a far better picture than vision could at the moment.
Just as the Wingull closed in for another round of grazing, it deftly barrelled in an attempt to dodge. Whether or not it succeeded, the purple tail was swung in a wide arc to lash out simultaneously while it closed in for a blind bite.

Shaun was amused by the confused Rat, but it seemed it was quickly getting back on it's feet. The order to close its eyes felt a little odd and Shaun thought the trainer wanted it to clear it's head...apparently not, as its eyes remained closed up until the attack. Ruck managed to slam into it all the same thanks to the speed of it's aerial ace, but it did leave it wide open to what was coming in. "Ruck get back outta there!" The Bird screeched and managed to just barely dodge the incoming tail whip thanks to the turn the rattata had spent face planting, the wingull rose up higher over the Rattata, but not enough to dodge the crunch, screeching out harder as the large front fangs of the rat Pokemon dug into it's wing, managing to shake it off and gain some distance, Shaun clearly a little worried for it. "Y'okay bud? Take a rest if you need it!" The crowds murmered a little, some thinking Shaun wasn't keeping things interesting while some felt he was being sweet to his Pokemon. Ruck came down to roost on the ground, recovering some lost strength before rushing in with a glowing wing, striking with another aerial ace. Ruck | Wingull | Hydration | HP: 100% |

A smart move on the opposing party’s part. Ultimately, they were having two different games on each end. It was a race for Rattata to end the battle quickly, and a marathon for Wingull to see how long it could stall and eventually let the Rattata wear itself out. Such was noted by Gray. He wondered how long his Pokemon would persist throughout the fight.
It had guts, that much he had to admit.
While Shaun’s orders were not inherently interesting to the audience, it did play out well by the young man’s standards. It was, ultimately, the safest way to go about counterattacking.
Rattata panted and stood. It’s little purple coat bobbing up and down ever so slowly made it’s fatigue all the more apparent. Confusion was one thing to deal with, being worn out was another completely. Combining those two aspects together resulted in it taking another Aerial Ace head on without it even noticing the approach of it’s opponent.
A blow that would land throughly on top of it’s head, yet failed to shake it from where it stood. Iron-like resolve kept it in place for another round of attacks. It was at that exact moment it knew where Wingull was. The only problem remaining was trying to hit it. That it did at least try to do with the same attack from before. A slam from it’s tail while gnawing downwards.
