To a lot of people, the underground ruins of Carrefor would seem gloomy and uninviting, eerie and foreboding... But to Val, they might as well have been home.
Val and their Gengar walked side by side through the ruins, stopping every now and then to examine an unusual-looking rock or something that sparkled in the dim light emitted by Val's flashlight; Val made it a point to take paths they were pretty sure they hadn't taken before, to look upon new sights and potentially discover new treasures.
There was a certain beauty, Val thought, to the ruins, even in the poor shape they were in now. Val could only vaguely imagine how they must have looked before becoming mere ruins--magnificent buildings and statues, a testament to a civilization at its height, suddenly struck down...
Val's train of thought was lost as their flashlight revealed a most interesting sight, one that Val would have to examine more closely.

(Claiming the Big Pearl)
Val looked upon a statue of a monstrous-looking Pokemon which they couldn't readily identify, its claws clutching a large and lustrous pearl.
Val stood there for a moment, pondering how this statue might well be an archaeological treasure, how under close examination it might reveal more about the civilization that once stood where Carrefor was now...
Then Val remembered that, while there was a slight chance that the statue could be of great value to researchers, there was a very good chance that the pearl held in its claws would be of value--literal monetary value--to jewelers back in town.
Val stopped to take a picture of the statue before wrenching the pearl out of its grasp and putting it into their bag. Maybe someday Val would be able to show the picture to somebody who would know its deeper meaning, who could respect its cultural value as much as its monetary value. Maybe someday, Val would find somebody who cared as much about ruins and gravestones as they did.
In the light of the camera flash, something else caught Val's eye, and they turned their flashlight to expose their next discovery.

(Claiming Key Stone)
Was that...?
Val approached the stone that had glimmered in the camera's flash, crouching down to have a better look at their find.
Their initial suspicions were confirmed. Here, lying among the ruins, in the most unlikely of spots, a Key Stone was lying on the ground, just waiting to be picked up.
As Val picked up the stone and held it in their hand, they reflected upon the stone's use in Mega Evolution. They had never thought too much about Mega Evolution, though they knew some of their own Pokemon were capable of it; it seemed most useful in battling, and battling wasn't high up on Val's list of priorities. But now, holding a Key Stone in their hand, Val wondered if they should consider Mega Evolution more closely, think of it as something they could pursue someday...
This stone, at least, they wouldn't be selling to any jeweler. This stone was theirs now, theirs and theirs alone.
Val put the Key Stone away in their bag, where its glimmering in the dim light emitted by their flashlight was hidden away, but it lingered on their mind nonetheless.
Soon enough, though, as Val continued to wander through the ruins, they found something else that piqued their interest as well.

(Claiming the Big Pearl)
Val found another pearl, as big and beautiful as the one currently stashed in their bag--but this one was lying on the ground, out in the open, exposed to the elements... it was practically a miracle that the pearl hadn't been damaged before Val's discovery. For a few moments, Val was confused as to how the pearl had gotten there, but a closer examination of the scene revealed a stone statue, identical to the one Val had snagged the first pearl from--except that this one had been broken in half by some unknown force.
Val wasn't superstitious, really. (They knew well enough the reality behind many of those superstitions, anyhow.) But something about the monstrous-looking statue, and the way its twin had been ripped asunder, made the hair on the back of their neck stand up straight. Val was no historian, but they knew enough about Carrefor's history to know that something catastrophic had happened here in the past, and they couldn't shake the feeling that these statues had something to do with it, that the monster they depicted might well have been the cause of that disaster.
Val grabbed the pearl off the ground and placed it gently in their bag. Whatever had happened to it before--whatever scene the statue had depicted, whatever had caused the pearl to dislodge and the statue to break in two--it was theirs for the taking now.
Still, Val felt like they shouldn't linger in the area too long... just in case.
One more treasure, they decided. One more piece of treasure, one more bit of loot for the taking, and then they would go home, and they could forget about the ancient residents of Carrefor and the calamity that had befallen them.
And soon enough, that last treasure was spotted.

(Claiming Old Amber)
It didn't look like much at first glance, admittedly.
It was a yellow-orange rock, translucent, slightly larger than Val's fist. It didn't sparkle or glitter or shine in the slightest. It could easily be dismissed as just another rock without putting much thought into it.
But when Val approached it, they noticed that within that seemingly-ordinary rock lay the frozen remains of a living being.
Some kind of blood-sucking insect, by the looks of it. Something that Val was very glad was hidden away in amber, never to bite them (or anyone else) ever again.
Something that the right kind of scientist might just be able to revive, with the right tools and for the right price.
Val admired the long-dead Pokemon's remains for a long second before shoving the rock into their bag and turning back towards the ruins' entrance.
This visit had been a fruitful one, to say the least.
