Appearance
Jae-Jin is a slim young man measuring 5'7", relatively short for the region but of average height in his home country. Despite his unassuming stature he is fairly well built for his size, not quite muscular but of an athletic build.
Dark, nearly black hair haphazardly sits upon most of his crown, the monotonous mass only broken by a clean section of white locks occupying the area mostly above his left eye, a few strands of which rebelliously curl right up. His hair is long enough to easily cover his ashen grey eyes, but manage to usually part in such a way that they generally stay unobstructed.
He tends to keep a simple wardrobe consisting of plain dark leggings, black shoes, and a form fitting double breasted black coat, the tail of which is tattered and worn, seemingly singed at the edges. The collar of this coat reaches high, conveniently covering up much of the lower half of his face most of the time. For colder weather he owns a thick winter coat of similar style, coupled with a soft, violet scarf that he can wrap comfortably around his neck and face.
A black belt adorns his waist, capped off with a somewhat ornate silver buckle and two small, curved sheathes set against the back, in which he carries two daggers of an almost ceremonial forging. The crescent-like blades nearly glow with a deep sapphire hue, its construction
Personality
It wouldn't be unfair for the first word to come to mind in describing Jae-Jin to be simply 'quiet'. That isn't to say that he's fits neatly into the stereotypical stoic, silent role, however it would, again, be reasonable to describe him as such. He generally keeps his mouth hidden under the collar of his coat, making it easy to conceal his expression. That being said, he normally doesn't have much of an expression to conceal, a carefully measured neutral gaze is usually all that can be seen, his eyes narrowing and widening in various ways to convey any and all of the emotion he intends to project most of the time.
It would be unfair to say that he doesn't feel, however. In fact, he can be quite passionate in the right conditions, and isn't above the odd empathetic expression or two. While not excitable in so many words, Jae-Jin is a caring individual, holding the core of an innocent, even naïve youngster deep within himself. Very deep.
He isn't above lending a helping hand to those who need it, and has a working understanding of the traditional values of 'right' and 'wrong'. However, he has no problem turning a blind eye to need if it would suit him better to walk away, placing his own safety above another's with only a dull ache in his heart reminding him of a younger self's compassion.
Not necessarily a pacifist, Jae-Jin would prefer to avoid violence at most junctures - pokemon battles excluded - if at all possible. If pressed, however, he is a dangerous individual with or without the weapons he keeps on his person at all times, a nimble and well trained fighter, albeit with admittedly low experience in a 'true' fight.
All in all, this young expat wants nothing more than to find a place in this new world, the comforting embrace of a stable existence leading him along as he explores his new home.
History
Jae-Jin Ahn is not from here. The land that he hails from is quite a distance away from Veria, with few native Pokemon that call it home. It is for this reason that his home is in minimal contact with those regions that do have a substantial population of the creatures, its government strongly preferring a society that mostly lacks in their presence for one reason or another. They are well known, however, and there was a rather lucrative black market related to the smuggling of Pokemon into his home country, both rare and common. Simply put, even the most mundane of Pokemon are exotic to those who have none.
To put it simply, Jae-Jin's childhood was uneventful, plain, and rather average. He went to school, got good grades, and while his parents both shared busy careers, they managed to raise him properly, giving him their wholehearted attention frequently.
If asked, one would be told that his parents were accountants. And this was true. Both of his parents served in an accounting role for a large criminal syndicate that he knew as his extended 'family', such an arrangement being not quite uncommon in his homeland.
What the young man never knew was that his parents had another role, the pair being rather notorious assassins and enforcers for their underground organization, ruthless and efficient killers. Jae-Jin was raised from a young age to be proficient with a pair of daggers that had been passed through his father's line for countless generations, the boy growing and maturing into a skilled and nimble fighter - but not a killer.
It had always been his parents' intention for him to inherit their profession, eventually. But as fate would have it, he would never learn of the truth behind his training and their own lives.
Jae-Jin had been left on his own one night, his parents having left him for a business meeting. Not an uncommon occurrence at the time, given the nature of their profession. However, but a few hours later an 'uncle' of his, another enforcer in the organization his family belonged to, barged in and demanded he pack his things to come with him.
And so Jae-Jin fled, scarcely having time to shove some clothes into a bag as he was rushed along. Just before they left, however, the deep sapphire of his family's daggers caught his eyes, and he took those with him as well, sheathing the blades and stuffing them in with his scant belongings.
As he was sequestered away he was told of what happened. His parents, along with a few other prominent members of his 'family' had been attacked by a rival organization, murdered. Due to his parents' notoriety his uncle had decided to come save him from a similar fate.
He spent the next two years in a quiet, secluded countryside, hiding with blood relatives of his uncle's far away from the city he'd been born in.
However, it was not to last. The next time he would see his uncle, he bore only more grim news. There was a target on the boy's head, in part due to the priceless heirlooms he continued to hold in his possession. What his uncle neglected to mention was that he was truly being hunted was due to his blood. Simply but, he was a scapegoat for revenge.
There was only one way out. In his palm was placed a small sphere, plain red and white with a single seam splitting it. A rarity in his home, he knew what had to be done.
It was arranged for the young man to be taken far away, to a distant region in which pokemon were much more abundant. Veria was the perfect choice. Far away from his place of birth, and little smuggling going to and from the regions. This lack of a strong connection would ensure his safety, it was hoped.
He was smuggled onto a ship soon enough, that was bound for... A region between the two. And then another ship, taking him closer. And one more. A trail of connecting cruises that would serve only to make his trail more difficult to track.
His final journey would be a flight, the first he'd ever been on, that took him straight to the city of Alterna in what would become his new home in the region of Veria. When he stepped down in the strange foreign land, it was initially a challenge to explain the weaponry he carried on himself, but fortunately he was let through without much of a problem once he had properly registered them and explained their purpose.
He was finally free, and... alone. Well, perhaps he wasn't truly alone, and as he watched the sun set in this new horizon, he took out his lone pokeball and examined it. Not once had he released the creature inside, nor had he inquired as to what it even was. It made him nervous, truthfully. The only companion he had left in this world, a total stranger, a beast that simply did not exist in the world he'd left behind.
But he would have to, in order to survive, grow accustomed to the new norm, and finally he opened the orb to properly meet what was inside. A serpent of brilliant blue, a curious hue that immediately reminded him of the deep sapphire of his family heirlooms. For the first and only time since that night, he cried.

Skills (0/11)
Dexterity: Minor — Jae-Jin is adept with the daggers that once belonged to his parents, having been trained from childhood to use them in combat. While such extended training has left his hands fairly dexterous in general, he is most efficient when using those weapons. He has never formally finished the training his parents provided, leaving him with some gaps in his bladework, but he nonetheless is skilled.
Agility: Major — Another effect of his upbringing, Jae-Jin is nimble and agile on his feet, his fighting style relying on quick dodges, nimble footwork and countering movements. While he has no strong will to fight, he's more than capable of defending himself in a pinch, and even more adept at simply avoiding an assault altogether.

The first thing he noticed when he stepped off the plane was the abundance of odd, colorful and variously formed creatures that filled the space. Human and Pokemon coinciding almost incidentally, as if it was totally normal.
He shook his head slightly, chiding himself. No, it is normal here. That was going to be somewhat difficult to get used to.
It wasn't as if Pokemon were a foreign concept to him. He'd seen some in person before, after all. And he'd learned about them in school, and in his own personal studies. But as he examined the multitude of beings around him, most were unfamiliar. Were the books he'd read and studied when he was younger simply outdated? He knew that more species were supposedly being discovered constantly... Perhaps it was a more rapid rate than he'd considered.
His hand went to the small orb that was clipped to his waist, feeling its smooth surface as if to ground himself to his new reality. All around him similar rounded objects would hang from the belts, bags and presumably pockets of a good majority of those around him. He was a trainer now. Whatever he might have been before was of no concern. That life was gone.
