To be blunt, nobody in the office was happy after what had happened to Dasha. The poor girl was basically sucking food out of a straw at this point. Josh hadn't been there to do anything about it, but he'd been on the mission. And for that, he felt personally responsible in some way. They had been split into two teams... He and Thomas Benoit, as well as the aforementioned Dasha Laska and Commander Takeki Kaimana. But something had gone wrong on Dasha and Kai's end, and well... There they were. In the end, as much as they took the piss out of each other, and not everyone in that office liked one another, there was still a bit of a family unit amongst all that, and one of their own was... Well, shit. He didn't even know where to begin. It'd put a damper on the office since, and nobody was happy. The environment in the office was depressing as anything, and Josh constantly found himself in a bad mood when he left. He didn't show this by being snappy at anyone or anything, no, he just... Was far more quiet. And that told the story better than anything. After one of those shifts had ended, Josh decided one thing. He needed a drink. It wasn't long after he had clocked out that he decided to take a detour to a bar in Faraday. Just a drink or two, he decided. Something to... Numb the emotions before he had a Pokemon take him home. If he couldn't feel anything, he wouldn't have to worry about those feelings interfering with the rest of the day, right? So he found himself taking a seat at the bar and waiting for the bartender to come forward. When they did, they looked him up and down a moment before speaking. "Never thought I'd see a movie star in my bar. What can I do ya for?" Josh managed to force a small smile, though the fact he was upset was written all over his face. There was one thing that Josh was, and always would be - and that was a bad liar. "I'm just a customer today" He answered softly. "Can I get one of those?" He asked, pointing toward a drink of his fancy. The tender nodded and toured him a drink, sliding it his way. "Thanks" He spoke softly, the usual pep in his voice completely gone at this point, replaced with weariness. I'LL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO PROTECT IT

Kai had been kind of a mess for the past few days. He wished he could say the mess of paperwork involved with something like not only encountering a prototype Genesect but effectively abandoning half his team halfway through the mission paled in comparison to the guilt and worry over everything, but damn if it wasn't a headache and a half, too. ...In fact, make that three and a half, at once. God he hated this part of the job.
Enough that he'd finally decided, 'fuck it, who's gonna reprimand me?' and left work early this afternoon. He told himself he was going to go home and get some sleep, but on some level he knew better than to believe it, and sure enough, here he was.
He was already drunk enough to feel pretty hazy, but not nearly enough. Not enough to drown out how pissed off he was, or enough to stop his shoulder from driving him crazy, or enough that he wasn't still an unfortunate level of aware of his surroundings. As such, when he heard someone mention a movie star, he internally groaned. Surely not--? Of course it was. Of fucking course it was.
"Dragomir!" he called, a forced and borderline uncanny energy behind his voice. He waved from his spot down the bar and just around the corner. "Imagine running into you!" Why was he even--? He didn't want to talk to Josh. ... He kind of did, but it was probably ill-advised. Yet here he was so.

The drunkenly effected callout that came out as a loud, unfamiliar "Dragomir!" startled him, drawing out a spooked gasp as he jumped in his seat, being completely pulled out of his stupor of ignoring his surroundings by the call. The Pikachu on his shoulder, too, immediately bristled with it's fur standing on end as it's cheeks began to spark, but Josh had been teaching it to be more proper disciplined as of late since joining Interpol, so it knew better than to attack immediately. As for Josh... His hand immediately went to his belt where the small piece of steel that usually unfolded into his staff was placed and his head darted toward the source of the noise. The Agent was completely on-edge now that he'd been startled and broken out of his stupor, before his eyes rested on the source of the voice. His brow soon raised as his expression became that of bewilderment. There was his boss, drunk. He hadn't even noticed that he'd left the office early, but to be honest Josh hadn't really paid much attention to his surroundings at the office lately. Perhaps it was a coping mechanism? Keeping himself from looking toward Dasha's empty desk and being reminded of what had happened? To be honest, he really didn't want to talk to anyone right now. Least of all his drunk boss, who was a living reminder of what had happened on that day. But here he was, waving him over from across the bar. Letting out a breath, he would grab his drink, which he'd nearly knocked over with how quickly his arm had moved to his belt before, and place his free hand on the Pikachu's head. The small show of affection seemed to calm Lightning down, and the sparks radiating across it's cheeks soon dissipated as it appeared to understand that the situation had calmed down. With that, Josh made his way over, deciding that while he really didn't want to be social right now, it would be rude to just ignore Kai. Especially considering he was his boss. So he sat down across from him and raised his mug in greeting. "Imagine" He responded calmly, taking a quick sip of his drink to calm his nerves before speaking again. He was going to need a few more, clearly. "You scared the shit out of me" He would admit, a small, slightly amused smile crossing his lips. I'LL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO PROTECT IT

Some part of Kai registered Josh's startled reaction. It really did. It just.. immediately dismissed it, between his current state and previous biases. "I'm a master of stealth," he casually joked. There was... some reason that should have been funnier, he felt? And now he wasn't sure if he just couldn't place it or was only imagining such a reason existed. Oh well.
"To what do we owe the honor? Taking time out of your busy schedule to grace us with a visit." Not that he supposed anyone needed a real excuse to drink, but some bitter part of him expected champagne to be more Josh's thing. Do you actually think that about him? Probably not really, no. He was kind of losing track of what his actual impressions were and what was hyperbolic sarcasm right now.

He found himself smiling lightly at Kai's "master of stealth" comment. Well, at the least he seemed to be in decent spirits enough to make jokes. He was curious as to why their commander was here of all places, but really, he wasn't sure if it mattered. If he wanted to, he wanted to, right? Josh had his reasons for being here, but not everyone came here with a specific reason. Perhaps it was best to just... Forget about the how and the why, and just focus on the more important things. The blonde would take a ginger sip of his drink then, allowing himself to relax just a little. Of course, he rarely ever had his guard down fully. It was just a habit he'd developed by now. Or well, one he'd developed long ago. But circumstances the last few years certainly didn't help in the line of breaking that habit. Though he would frown at Kai's next comment, and that remark took the air right out of him. Seriously? Was he really going to pull that card? There didn't seem to be any humor in that, he knew full well what Kai was insinuating, what he seemed to be thinking. He had to admit, he was disappointed in Kai for that. He expected better, but considering the last few Commanders... Maybe he set his hopes too high when one actually decided to start doing their job for once. He was tempted to respond with something biting, and the drink wasn't helping, but he ultimately convinced himself to remain calm and forget about it. "I could ask you the same thing" Was what he ended up responding in a casual manner. He was the commander, right? He was probably busy... Probably. I'LL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO PROTECT IT

Had Kai been a bit more sober, he might have felt like he walked right into that. As it was, it completely blindsided him, and he borderline balked for a moment before emitting a single sharp bark of a laugh. "What? Think I should take a second or third job to do between my shifts?" That tone was superficially joking, but Arceus was it bitter just under the surface.
"I close my eyes at night and see dying faces. My leg convulses every time I hear a loud bang. The woman I gave fifteen years of my life casually picked her new boyfriend over me, and because of it I don't get to see my kids for half of every year." He swigged down what was left of his current drink, then slammed it down with more force than necessary-- startling himself very slightly in the process like a dumbass, apparently. Good job, Kai. Regardless, he kept a pasted smile as he answered, "Can't imagine why I might wanna drink~ Now what's your damage."

That certainly didn't sound like a joke, bu he'd take it in stride. He still seemed to be quite calm, despite having a few drinks already. Who knows if that would last, but considering he'd drank far more heavily than this before Izumi set him straight, it might be a fair bit. With that, he would shrug his shoulders. "Well, you never know when you decide to start up on a new project, and a bit of ways in, some dude in a creepy mask shows up at your door" He would respond, in a lightly joking matter. With that, he would suddenly take a very, very serious face, and give the biggest, most over the top looking scowl. It was a scowl unbecoming of Josh, but it would likely remind Kai of someone commonly in the office... "Come with me. Now" He would suddenly speak in an impersonation of a voice that sounded a lot like Thomas. "Tell your wife to stop trying to kill me and come with meeee."The blonde would chuckle a bit as he took a sip of his drink, before speaking again in his actual voice. "Oh right, I don't think I ever actually told you. When I was first recruited, they sent Thomas" He would explain. "And back then, Thomas never took off that mask. Ever. So my wife answers the door, and she sees this Saw looking dude standing at the door demanding to see her husband. She just completely freaks out and proceeds to grab the nearest blunt object she can find and tries to dent his mask with it. And when I come down, the first thing I see is her finding something sharp."He laughed a little as he scratched his head sheepishly after telling the story. "She's uh... Scary. To say the least."Kai would go on to drunkenly talk about his own wife, and the Agent would frown as he would explain that his own wife had left him for another man. And that he didn't get to see his kids. "Oh... I... I uh..." He spoke softly, growing quiet then. He didn't know what to say to that. But he'd held an unconscious fear for a long time that Izumi Yamamura would do the same thing. But he did trust her, he did. But he hadn't ever fully trusted anyone to be completely devoid of possible treachery, not for a very long time. The slamming of the glass startled him, but less so than before. "I'm sorry" Josh spoke quietly. He would ignore the sarcasm that came with it, but when he asked him what his own damage was, he stopped. "I..."
He didn't want to say it. He clearly had enough on his mind as it was, and the Dasha incident was a sore spot for everyone on the team right now. He didn't want to bring it up, not now. His face fell as he looked away a bit, unable to meet his eyes. He remained in silence as he would take a long swig. I'LL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO PROTECT IT

Kai hadn't recognized what Josh was doing with the scowl, and only through a decent impression and the vague effort toward matching the other agent's Kalosian accent would he start guessing Thomas. The explanation helped fill in The Blank (although Kai was not sober enough to even realize that was a mental pun), but he was left with a sense of... okay then, good to know but don't care.
As Josh failed to produce a response to his question, he signaled the bartender for another round. "You sure?" the guy briefly asked, but after Kai's deadpan look he simply shrugged. Refilling Kai's glass, he cautioned, "Try to take it slow, you've had a good bit already."
"I'll live," was the only weak response, and some morbid voice in the back of his head added, Unfortunately. Why was that more amusing to him than it was anything else?
"Now what were you saying, Dragomir? Don't be shy~"

He didn't want to talk about why. And he figured if he did, Kai would just get upset as well, and by the looks of it, the Commander didn't need anymore reason to get upset and drink. He would quirk a brow when the bartender would ask if Kai had drank enough. How much had he had exactly? Josh had already begun to numb down, though he still had his senses left enough to understand what was going on. He drank slowly when he came to these places, which helped when combined with his tolerance. Another Izumi influence. If he drank slower, he'd have to leave sooner or later and he'd have drank less, and saved more money. If he still felt miserable by then, he could always just sleep at home. Or lose himself in his work and forget for a little while. 'tis what he usually did. Unfortunately, Kai continued to persist in asking what was his reason for drinking. He hadn't exactly denied that something was wrong, and Josh knew he'd already given the signs that he was here for more than just recreation. The blonde would let out a sigh and try to think of how to explain. But he didn't know where to begin. Whether it was the numbing effect of the drink or just his emotional state at the moment, he didn't know where to start. All he could do was say a simple word that he hoped would at least answer the question. He spoke it softly, and found himself frowning deeply when he did so. "Dasha."

... Siiiiiiiigh. Kai sat his drink down.
Fine, yeah, okay. Kai couldn't really blame him for that. His earlier list had more been to convey 'my life is consistently shit' (never mind that in a more sober state he was quite aware of how privileged it was in many regards as well), but that was definitely a strong catalyst for him right now as well.
"Not your fault, kiddo..." As much as Kai wanted to turn it somehow-- to say if Josh was more focused as an agent things might have been different, or if he and Benoit had gotten better intel they could have been better prepared-- he made the decision to assign teams the way he did, and he made some poor decisions fighting alongside Dasha. ... He also probably saved her life, if they were keeping track, and it damn sure wasn't his fault she was as reckless with her life as she was, but she might not have ever been in that position if he'd made better calls.
"Least she should recover fine. Could be a lot worse." Because that didn't sound insensitive, but whatever. He was always pretty blunt while drunk.

He wasn’t sure whether to take that as reassurement for how he was feeling about the Dasha situation, honestly. With how Kai had been sine the night had begun, he didn’t know how to take anything he said, whether it seemed good, or it seemed bad. All he could do in the moment was be honest, really. “I guess. Still... I always wonder” Josh would admit as he would take a large swig of the drink he had, and would have it replaced if it was gone. “If I could have done everything - anything - different, and if I had... Then maybe Dasha would be okay” He spoke softly. “I’ve been thinking about how it all went down for some time now. Just keep replaying it all in my head and thinking about what I could have done differently But... I don’t know. And that kills me too.”Being helpless was something that he despised as well. He always wanted to be able to help. If he was powerless to do so, it frustrated him without end. The blonde let out a deep exhale as he would tap the table a bit in thought. “I feel as though I owe Dasha, big time. She’s been one of the few members of the team to show me kindess, and she has no idea how much I appreciate that she had at a time where I was starting to dread coming in to our work environment. I give everything I have for this job, for this team, and I feel like I still get a lot of resentment. But not from Dasha. She gave me some hope. I wanted to give something back, and yet... I feel like I failed her when the chance came around.”He’d opened up, just a little. He didn’t do that often these days. Perhaps he would care more without the alcohol, but at the moment all he could feel was bitter, sad and irritable. He'd probably regret bothering Kai with how he was feeling later, and kick himself later for it, when he was a bit more sober. Still, there was genuine emotion in his voice. Genuine passion when he brought up his work, genuine sorrow that gave a clear picture of the fact he'd been agonizing over Dasha's condition since it had happened. Kai would reasure that Dasha would likely recover fine, and he nodded his head. Though reminding him that it could have been worse didn’t help, he decided not comment on it. “Yeah...” He spoke softly. “Yeah.”

Kai had to fight not to roll his eyes at Josh's self-pity, caught somewhere between 'It almost feels like you're trying to make this about you,' and 'You think YOU keep wondering??' He might've said the latter-- reminded Josh that Kai was the one who chose the teams and the one who'd been there with her-- but the blond continued before he quite gathered his thoughts, so oh well.
But then came words that made Kai immediately want to punch him, though he'd settle for clenching his fists and jaw at the moment. I give everything I have for this team.
Kai tried, really tried, to bite his tongue, and at least he let him finish. But when his anger hadn't subsided at all by then, he seethed, "Don't give me that bullshit." He wasn't yelling or making a scene, but the quiet loathing bled through clearly enough. "Giving everything for this job is coming in early and staying late without anyone asking. It's moving halfway round the world and working the rest of your life around it. Giving everything for this job is not coming in whenever you can find time between three other jobs and a budding relationship."
Some part of him had wanted to go off about this ever since he first heard of Josh as an agent, but he'd held it back until now. Now he was just stressed enough, just drunk enough, just prompted enough. "You think the criminals of Veria are just sitting around waiting while you shoot an Arceus-forsaken movie scene? You think Pokémon trafficking takes a day off while you make sure your businesses are running smoothly?" he sneered. "No one lives in the office, but I've known rookies who give more focus to this job than you. Don't you goddamn dare try to tell me you give everything for this team."
