ALTERNA CITY
[Old Information]
Introduction & History Where Flowers Bloom, Alterna is a lush lakeside city that extends into rural landscape. Modern windmills and other urban technologies keep the area feeling pristine and natural, and just as much is done to preserve the down to earth culture. Originally an arid desert, Alterna’s area was first settled as part of a trade route. However, through the prayers of the inhabitants and with the power of the legendary Pokemon Shaymin and Landorus, the land was blessed, and the ground became lush and fertile for years to come. A statue of a Shaymin exists in the center of town telling this story, and a shrine similar to Unova’s Abundant Shrine honors Landorus. |
Population & Culture Due to the incredible fertility of the land, farming and ranching is heavily encouraged, and gratitude for the earth is a heavy aspect of life. An abundance of crops and other products are exported from Alterna, making it the agricultural capital of Veria. Everything from Pokemon products to plant and animal products can be found in Alterna. Tourists often come for annual flower viewing parties and to experience the simpler aesthetics of the land around them. Many breeders make their homes here due to the surplus of land and natural resources, and the headquarters of the Verian Breeder's Association is located here. There has long been a tight community in the area who exchange goods and services to help support one another. After numerous threats to their safety and the Life Pillar event, however, many citizens of Alterna now feel less safe than they have in the past. Paranoia has caused much of the once close knit community to slowly mistrust itself internally and others externally, while a smaller number seem to overcompensate in clinging harder than before. Social tensions are slowly on the rise in a once peaceful city. |
City Structure Alterna’s cityscape is rather clean. No buildings can be more than ten floors leaving it easy to see the sky from most areas. Most buildings are made of colored brick and have a Swiss chalet feel to them. A smaller portion of buildings are made of different types of wood taken primarily from naturally downed trees or ones grown specifically and sustainably to be used as materials, as well as recycled from older projects. The rare logging of natural forests is done carefully and sparingly, and primarily where the edges of the various forests are encroaching too close to farmlands or some minor clearing may otherwise serve additional benefits. Shops and restaurants are small, family-style places that take what’s produced and turn it into something more aesthetic. Open markets are common, and people often sell their homemade goods including the freshly baked berry bread. Small gardens are common even in the inner city areas as a testament to the natural environment. The outer city is farming and ranch land with numerous gated areas extending onto the horizon. |
Points of Interest The Alterna City Bug Gym is a dome structure that also functions as an insectarium maintained by Adrian Gideon. The Alterna Aquasphere is a large aquarium and sanctuary owned by Kouji Sakuraba. For a small fee [buying the right ball in the PokeMart] patrons can befriend and catch one of the Pokemon he has bred and stocked to interact with. The nearby Wasteland lies just north of Alterna, and was created by the Life Pillar event in November of 2016. Wild Pokemon have also become something of a problem here due to the proximity to the Wasteland. |
