CARAVELLA CITY
[Old Information]
Introduction & History 'The Pearl by the Sea', Caravella is the oldest city in the Veria region, and its founders learned quickly of the hostile wilderness that can come with Veria. One of its oldest stories tells of an ancient Water Pokemon once that flooded the city, but rather than drain all the water into the sea, the inhabitants rebuilt in a manner befitting the sea and integrated it deep into their growing culture. Embracing the ocean as a source of life, it gleams with canals and waterways and holds a rich culture spanning back over 1000 years. From museums to cathedrals, it’s bursting at the seams with Classical art and Gothic architecture. Many unique festivals are held annually, and there’s always something to do. Caravella has a very stable, Mediterranean style climate most of the year. Combined with the abundance of water to swim, surf, and play in, this makes it an excellent place to vacation. |
Population & Culture The culture of Caravella is unique even to the Veria region. They have their own distinctive language, Caravellian (Venice Italian), spoken in addition to Common; and they have many distinct traditions, arts, and festivals. Artists and artisans often seek refuge here under rich patrons. Economically and socially, Caravella is led by wealthy elite who call themselves nobility. These exist in tiers, with four High Nobles acting as the city leaders, while lower nobles may have no power beyond their own private grounds. However, two of the four High Nobles have been ransacked fairly recently, shifting more control to the other two and causing some political instability as the two who have been robbed struggle to rebuild and maintain their influence. Being a Gym leader in the city offers the benefit of being labeled Il Doge di Caravella, effectively a noble term, and being respected by the city similar to the nobility. (A Gym leader may turn down this offer, although the nobility may not be fond of the decision.) There is a fight to keep the status quo, and the elite rarely bend to the will of a much poorer majority. It is difficult to gain money and status, and living in the city for long without wealth or some economic niche can easily break the illusion of beauty. Those who find themselves economically disadvantaged often turn to petty or organized crime to get by, and with Caravella being a port city, smuggling is an especially prominent crime. |
City Structure Caravella is a wayward maze of canals and waterways, and while it is possible to transverse the arguably more confusing built up streets and paths, it might be a little more appealing to ride a gondola. Most of the buildings are old and artfully designed with Gothic spires and Victorian houses being commonplace. Cobblestone and flagstaffs are the norm on larger roads while side streets wind into dirt roads. The Caravellian harbor is huge spanning most of the ocean front, and living by the sea is a form of status. While there are a few scattered supermarkets and Pokemon Centers, there are many more locally-owned business and shopping districts and more hole-in-the-wall stores than one would find in other, more organized cities. Outdoor shops and stalls are a frequent appeal during times of celebration and can often be found even on the off days, especially by the harbors. Finding what you’re actually looking for might be a chore, however. Beyond the main part of the city is a series of rolling hills that is used year round as farm and ranch land. Due to the large amount of natural water that cycles in this area, rice and barley are especially large staples. |
Points of Interest The Rose Manor, owned by Amor Rose, was the site of a major hostage incident involving Niso Konto and several accomplices in February of 2017. The largest port, Il Porto Reale, holds one of the most notable architectural works: two large spires staring off into the sea. |
