I wonder how far down these tunnels go? Standing aboard a dim platform that was dropping steadily into the darkness, as artificial lights tried but didn’t quite succeed in chasing away the shadows around her, Sophie Sequoia mused quietly from beneath the cover of a yellow hard hat. The not so elegant piece of headwear holding a round lamp which for the time being she had chosen not to turn on, in contrast to the usual business-like manner in which she tended to dress, the young woman looked a little more ‘ready for action’ today.
Wearing what looked to be a tight body suit that seemed to highlight her long legs even in this dull light, she sported a pair of sturdy looking boots that stretched all the way up to just beneath her knees, much of the chest and stomach of Miss Sequoia was hidden away by what looked to be a well stuffed vest. This isn’t to say that she was putting on weight but rather carrying a large but convenient quantity of equipment, the item that had been given a reflective trim that glowed in the dull light seemed to be covered in pockets and pouches and each seemed to have something or other within them. Tools hanging from rings around her waist, in place of the usual belt she wore to carry her pokéballs and potions she seemed to have space made on her outfit in order to support them, giving her an almost militaristic appearance that contrasted her more studious styling. This looked a very different professor that was for certain.
“I gotta say, until we got your request we hadn’t really heard of something called ‘Arcadia’ before? You guys sure seem to know the right people to talk to, though... Usually requests take weeks to process, not minutes?” A man scratching his scruffy beard only a few feet to her side as he eyed a patch just below her shoulder that carried the letters ‘A’ and ‘I’, the woman blinked as she was brought away from a little idle minded speculation as one of the supervisors of the Liggs Mines made a little small talk with her. Glancing at the patch which caught his attention for a second and feeling similarly new to the notion he had expressed, she gave a light chuckle at his comment as she had so recently shared his confusion and turned slightly on the spot to regard him more fully.
“Until recently, that would have made two of us…” Giving just a hint of a squint as she tried to study this middle aged fellow through the dimness before smiling more fully, the pout of the former Pokemon League professor arced a little bit higher as she recalled the whirlwind pace with which she had become familiar with her new employer.
“The Institute is as new as new can be, but we have the backing and minds that will hopefully make a difference?” Cocking her head slightly as she recalled the interview and offers she had been made, though Sophie had been reluctant to go into the ‘private sector’ so quickly, she remained optimistic that she had made the right choice. The fancy new ‘work gear’ she now wore being only one of the more minor perks she had been offered, the few weeks that Miss Sequoia had spent in her new position had been busy but exciting.
“A lot of the time I tend to think private groups and institutions can feel like they have a mercenary feel? Like a bunch that are only there to get rich?” Offered a kind of ‘freedom from responsibility’ that work outside the League could give one, she felt like she had the chance to focus on things with a little fewer distractions, and it probably didn’t hurt her ego too much that she had been headhunted by the people in charge for the role she now fulfilled.
"They get all the good toys and can just call it a day whenever they want?" Seemingly given the keys to the kingdom in order to search for fresh discoveries in the Pokémon world, the resources and connections she now had access to had made a ‘day trip’ to the Liggs Mines an easy thing to organise and Sophie had been wanting to root around in this place practically since the first day she had come to Veria.
"However, what we’re trying to offer at Arcadia is simply the chance to try a fresh approach? To build on what has come before, and maybe make things just a little better?" An almost mythical repository of buried items that tended to bring about change in Pokémon, it seemed a treasure trove for one to visit both in terms of items to find and the monsters that lived near them. After all, it did not seem a terribly large leap of logic to think that unstable items that pushed creatures through development that even nature could provide might have an impact on those that lived here, and now one only needed to find out what those changes might happen to be…

Is that? The light of her head-mounted lamp causing something not too far away from her to glitter, Sophie moved closer to gleaming flash in the tunnel wall and found herself scrutinizing a chunk of stone that seemed to have a tone of subtle yellow colour. Running her index finger from side in the small gap between the top of her chin and the bottom of her lower lip thoughtfully for a second, the blue eyed beauty elected to take advantage of certain agreements that had been established for her little visit and claim this item for herself, suspecting it to likely be some form of gem or Z-Crystal.
Given the reputation of this rich mine, it should be worth studying… Groaning a little as she employed a small pick from her utility vest to try and prize it free, the now privately employed professor had left the elevator shaft that had brought her here a good many minutes before now and had since spent her time exploring the cave like network of excavations for anything she could find of note. Curious about research samples of both a mineral and animal variety or even vegetable if by chance she came across it, Arcadia’s new Head of Pokémon Research felt perfectly at home even in this dim environment, finding herself reminded of the caves of Johto by this man made environment.
“That should… Do it!” Wrenching her tool a little as she pressed her weight into it to free the gemstone, Sophie gave a soft grunt that preceded a short and sharp tinkle as the yellowish stone dropped to the ground near her feet. Feeling pleased with her amateur efforts toward excavation and nodding to herself, as the young woman looked down to see where the stone had fallen, as the light flooded the ground she found that she wasn’t the only interested party in the odd gem nearby.
“O-Oh!” Gasping as a round and lightly coloured figure bent forward and picked up something from the ground, Miss Sequoia let out a little exclamation of her surprise as she spotted something that would be rather familiar to the average trainer, especially one that had spent any time in the regions that bordered mount silver. A pair of huge round eyes blinking at her and then looking at the yellowish diamond that had dropped to the floor, it took barely a second for the blue eyed belle to recognise the Balloon Pokémon known as Jigglypuff had joined her little expedition.
“Well hello there~ I must say you’re not what I expected to find down here but certainly a welcome surprise?” Smiling and bowing at both her hips and knees to drop down into a tightly tucked squat next to this orb-like oddity, Sophie spoke with her softest tone as she spoke to this seemingly docile little being that had found its way near her feet. Astounded by how tame the Jigglypuff appeared to her, while a great many Pokémon seemed to launch into battle mode as soon as they spotted another being, this one seemed hardly bothered at all to be in the company of an unknown human.
Has it gotten used to people because of the miners? Suspecting silently that this was perhaps not the first contact that this balloon-like being had with humans as she studied those large eyes and the cute little curl of hair that this creature sported, Miss Sequoia watched the Jigglypuff quietly for a few seconds studying it before the behaviour of the Pokémon made her giggle. Taking the gemstone into its mouth like it believed the item to be food, Sophie couldn’t help but laugh lightly as it spat the smooth but hard thing back out with a frown, before she herself lifted the dropped diamond back up and pocketed it.
“Not tasty, that one, is it? Though if you’re hungry I might be able to help you…” Tucking the little prize from the cave walls away in one of the pouches on her vest and pulling something out of one of the others, from a thin vial the girl produced a berry and offered it to the cute little monster. Repressing the urge to swoon that followed soon after seeing it paw the tiny piece of food curiously before picking it up, Sophie was happy to see a large smile spread beneath the equally big eyes of the Jigglypuff as it tasted the treat before chirping and seeming to demand another.
“Heeheehee, well I don’t have a lot of these but you can have one more, OK?” Nodding at the prompting of the Pokemon and producing another berry, the professor was pleased to see that her new friend seemed far less hesitant to receive a gift the second time around. Snatching the berry up as soon as it was offered and stuffing it into its mouth, the puffy little creature shrieked with enjoyment and jumped into the air, its underground habitat seeming to have deprived such a creature of this kind of nourishment for a good long while.
It does seem a shame to leave it behind, after all, Jigglypuff tend to live in meadows not caves usually… The affability of the creature certainly seeming to endear it strongly to Sophie in quite short order, as the girl looked at it grinning at her and perhaps hoping for more treats, she quietly began to rationalize the notion of making it her own. A mineshaft certainly seeming an inappropriate environment for a Pokémon like this, perhaps the part of the professor that was still a little girl spoke rather loudly to her in this encounter, but she didn’t mind that impulse too much. After all, a more diverse ‘sample group’ from this trip could only help her findings.
“OK!” Nodding and speaking with a tone filled with zeal that seemed to make the Jigglypuff blink, Miss Sequoia straightened a little and pulled an empty pokéball into her palm, which she offered to the curious cave dweller. Not wanting to spoil the rapport they had been developing by battling and subduing it and rather offering the little monster the choice to join her, while the pink haired girl hoped it wouldn’t be the case the buoyant being was given the option to walk away now if it wanted.
“Looks like we might get along well together, so if you want to, you can come with me and see what’s outside of this cave?” A slight sparkle in the eyes of the scholar as she spoke to the marshmallow-like being and tried to talk it into taking a place on her team, the girl waited and watched to see what response this Jolly Jigglypuff might give…

Feeling rather pleased with herself to have not only caught the Jigglypuff but also done so peacefully, whilst the pink puff of a Pokémon was not the typical example of something that one might find in a mine, Sophie Sequoia was satisfied with her acquisition all the same. Feeling like she had gotten off to a good ‘first step’, whether it was because the act had satisfied some immature affection she had for the adorable was immaterial to this young woman. She had begun with a good sense of momentum and hoped to keep that up. Unfortunately for her, it seemed that success was not the only habit she was about to keep.
“What…?” A dark shape fluttering its way through the darkness, as something sped through the air toward the blue eyed girl she might have expected one of the many bat-like Pokémon to be speeding toward her in the cave. However, once again her expectation was defied. The dim beam of light that her helmet provided her showing something that was red and white in colour and also rather ruffled, what approached her was not an airborne mammal, but rather a very unusual bird.
“H-Hey, slow down!” Stunned enough by the sight of the Delivery Pokémon known as Delibird to delay her reflexes, as the mind of Miss Sequoia caught up with the moment all she could do was throw her arms in front of herself as the bird ploughed right into her like a feathery cannonball. Seemingly in a rush and perhaps dazed in the dark by her torchlight, Sophie grunted and fell backward as she was bowled over by the bird and found her headlamp bouncing away from her, robbing herself temporarily of the torchlight she had been counting on.
“Unnngghhh…” Groaning a little as she felt the wind knocked out of her sails by the forceful presence of a Delibird in the gut, though her abdominals felt sore she pulled her body back up into a sitting position and scanned her surroundings. Spotting the beam of light that broke into the darkness and noticing her helmet quickly, the light shone over the prone form of a dazed Delibird with whom the woman and collided, and she wearily moved over to check if it was alright.
“Hey? You OK?” Speaking softly and holding her stomach as she half-stumbled across the cave, Sophie dropped to her knees as she looked over the creature that had smashed into her. Out cold but unhurt as far as she could tell, the pink haired girl ran a gently probing paw over the body to check the bird for any obvious sign of discomfort, but noted no look of distress from the animal. Appearing to be sleeping peacefully or as close to that as one could be following a head on collision, it didn’t feel like the bird had broken any bones and it certainly wasn’t tender enough to be woken by her assessment. That seemed to mean it was either fine, or had hurt itself a lot worse than the young woman could see, however the lack of blood or pain in its face made the professor hopeful it was more a case of the former rather than the latter.
“I think you’re alright, but just in case…” Hooking the hardhat that she had lost with her finger and popping it back onto her head, Sophie plunged her hand into one of the deeper pockets on her vest and pulled out a small spray potion from it, which she used to leave a light drizzle of dampness on the bird to ease any minor injuries it had suffered. Nodding at her action and feeling satisfied with the level of care she had given, Miss Sequoia then found herself wondering what she should do with the bird that lay on its back in this deep, dark cave.
I’d be rather remiss to just leave it unconscious in this cave… If the wrong kinda Pokémon came across it while it was knocked out, it would become something’s meal without being able to defend itself?]/i] A knot in her brow forming as she tried to weight up the survival chances of an unconscious Delibird, while Sophie was rational and reasonable enough to usually not interfere in matters of nature, she did feel a certain sense of responsibility to this bird. This not some incident that was happening behind her back but rather she had become involved in, albeit accidentally, could her conscience really carry the worry that she might have left this creature to die?
Shaking her head, she decided she couldn’t abandon it, and straightened up before taking a couple of steps back. Feeling a little bit of a ‘cheater’ to have subdued a Pokémon without actually battling it but pushing those feelings away thanks to her duty of care, the young woman plucked a spherical snare from her pocket and tossed it gently toward the stunned bird. Whether the creature would be ‘collected’ and taken to her lab remained to be seen, but even if it did rouse and break free of the ball, it would hopefully be awake enough to survive if she let it escape?

Don’t worry, if you wanna leave once you’re given the all clear, I’ll release you… Relieved to see that her Pokeball settled rather easily, after the light of her PC’s recall system swallowed up the extra addition to her team, Sophie turned around to continue her little underground tour but found her eyeline distracted by something. Once again something seeming to glint as the torchlight on her head passed over it, this time it was the floor that seemed to beckon the blue eyed beauty a short distance back the way she had come.
Another gemstone? Assuming that the incident with the Delibird had distracted her from this discovery earlier, Sophie plucked her pick from her waist and moved toward the glittering source of her attention. Moving to a spot on the ground that had a piece of geology not wholly dissimilar from the one she had found before, the young woman noted to her surprise there were two key differences between this new item and the one she had dragged from the wall earlier in the day.
It seems to have been left on the ground? The first the fact that she did not seem to need any sort of tool to ‘extract’ this item since it simply seemed to be sitting on the floor as if it had dropped from some surface or pocket of its own accord, a more mysterious factor about this find was the fact that it seemed to be giving off a rather subtle glow.
That’s odd… Spotting the subtle brightness that the smooth, diamond shaped rock seemed to have been giving off and flicking her headlamp off for a moment, the young woman felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up a little as she found that even in the darkness the stone seemed readily apparent to her. I’ve… Never seen a Z-Stone quite like this one? Oozing a kind of gentle glow in the dark like a blue ember, Sophie could recognise the same double pointed shape like the famous stones of Alola, yet had never heard of one that seemed to give off its own illumination? Wondering what the cause of this unique effect was and feeling a little cautious about touching the item with her fingers given the strange reaction, the professor placed her pick away and instead pulled out a pair of tweezers to scoop the item up with in order to preserve the sample as she found it, but before she could grab it found another surprise about the item that seemed even more fantastic than the light it had given off.
As she moved her tool toward the stone, to her surprise she gasped as it seemed to bounce up off the ground, seemingly capable of spontaneous locomotion! Trying a second time to snatch it up again but finding that bounced away from her tweezers, Sophie felt her jaw hang a little as something that one might have ordinarily seemed inanimate lurched around the ground every time she tried to take it, until shooting toward her and slipping between the knees she had been resting on.
“Goodness!” Startled even more by this new behaviour and pushing herself into a standing position to try and see where the sprightly stone had dashed off to, Miss Sequoia turned around and brought a hand to her mouth as she watched the glowing gem zooming around the ground in front of her, seeming to create a path in the darkness much like a child might draw shapes with a sparkling stick of pyrotechnic delight. Lifting her hand a little bit higher as she decided she might need to get a better look at the stone, the woman in the hard hat flicked the bulb on her headwear back on and with its help finally managed to solve at least one of the mysteries that had recently confused her.
“So that’s what’s going on, a Diglett?” The cone of light that the lamp above her brow provided showing both the stone and something beneath it, Sophie chuckled as she spotted an earthy coloured lump speeding around in front of her with the stone resting on the top of its round nose. Appearing to have gotten to the unusual item before the professor and now playing some sort of playful prank on her, had this been anything else the girl might have simply let this cheeky mole keep its prize, but this find seemed too important to abandon so easily.
“You certainly are a playful fellow, but I can’t let you keep that stone?” Shaking her head and speaking softly and sweetly to the small scavenger in the hopes of resolving things as peacefully as she had earlier with the Jigglypuff, Sophie pocketed her tweezers before pulling a few items from the other pouches she carried. “Though I’d be happy to offer you a trade if you’d be willing?” Holding out both hands that carried transparent tubes filled with berries and other Pokémon treats, the young woman waited as the mole scanned what she could offer and found herself oddly surprised when it grunted and shook itself from side to side. Seeming unimpressed with the wares she carried and pontificating its disinterest with a small shower of earth that it seemed to spit at her, Miss Sequoia sighed and decided that if she was going to claim this rare find as her own she might have to play a little unfairly.
“Fine, fine… But remember I gave you the chance, OK?” The mercy that she had shown the previous Pokémon not seeming to stretch to cover the actions of this petulant little ground dweller, as the mole returned to the act of zooming around the earth with its glowing little prize, the professor sighed and pulled a Pokéball from her waist somewhat reluctantly. Feeling a little bit bad for attacking an entity that was mostly harmless to her, it was a shame that its stubbornness was proving a problem between the two of them and Sophie’s reluctance was reflected in the choice of partner she called upon…

“Madam! Snatch that stone from it with your Telekinesis!” Opting to try and take the item without hurting the plucky little Diglett, as a pouting Pokémon with pigtails popped out as the partner of the professor, the young woman gave a fast order to try and catch their enemy unaware. The dancing dweller of the deep seeming disinterested in the new challenger for the moment, Sophie’s Madam pushed forward one of her slender arms and focused for a second before grabbing the stone with a force that looked like an invisible but fast hand had snatched the item up. The glowing oddity appearing to float upward before being pulled into the grasp of the girl’s psionic ally.
“Nice catch Madam!” Snapping her finger sharply with a smile as her plan was pulled off, it seemed to take a moment for the Diglett to notice it had been relieved of its possession, but when it did the small creature did not seem as impressed as Miss Sequoia was. Stopping in its tracks as it noticed the luminous gem had been stolen away and glaring at the Gothorita with a growl, the disinterest that the digging Pokémon had shown for fighting melted away quickly. Shooting forward like a rocket and hissing at both Sophie and her partner, despite the torchlight that the professor provided it looked to become surrounded by shadows suddenly before appearing to vanish for a moment.
Where did it…? Both trainer and the feminine fighter blinking as their attacker disappeared, for a second Sophie wondered whether it had used dig but the brevity of the manoeuvre quickly told her otherwise. Vanishing for a second at the most before launching itself out of the earth like an angry cannonball and socking Madam right in the face, the little Lolita was left with a swollen cheek and bloody lip as she stumbled to the side stunned and the mole returned to the ground.
That was a feint? Sophie quite astounded to see a Diglett pull off such a clever and unusual manoeuvre to get the better of its opponent, the young woman frowned as she found herself looking at the second find in a row that seemed rather unusual. This underground Pokémon not well known for the depth of dark moves in its arsenal, given the sophistication of its technique and how much it had hurt the psychic Gothorita, Miss Sequoia was forced to surmise there might be something special about this little creature as well, and opted to subdue it a little bit more forcefully.
“Seems that this little fellow can pack quite a punch, but it will be no match for the power of your Psyshock!” Nodding toward her partner and noting that Madam was itching to gain some measure of payback for the hurt she had suffered, the professor decided to play a little ‘trick’ with her own reply as she chose. Knowing that the move she had selected tended to play to the weaknesses of her opponent just as much as it did the strengths of her champion, Sophie tightened her fist a little as the body of her Gothorita began to shine with Psychic energy and watched as a cannonball of her own was sent lurching forward.
The Diglett dashing around the ground after its attack as it seemed to be looking for another chance to attack, though it was fast and the blow that Madam unleashed seemed rather straightforward to avoid, the bruised Lolita demonstrating she wasn’t the type to be trifled with, with her paw she curved the path that her attack took and slammed the orb of mental magic straight into the body of their animated adversary despite its attempts to avoid it.
A Crack ringing through the cavern as the blast made contact with the brown body of the mole, though lightning might have made little impact on a ground type like this it seemed that psychic energy was a wholly different matter. The Diglett left trembling by a powerful attack it had little if any way to defend against, despite the lack of any kind of type advantage Madam put enough power into her assault to finish the match with a single strike.
"That should show it for behaving in such an ungentlemanly fashion!" The dome-like body of the digger seeming to slump over as it leaned out of the hole it had been protruding through, the girls nodded at one another in satisfaction as an annoying adversary was dealt with, yet Sophie felt compelled not to leave it behind. Noting the unusual move that the Diglett had performed previous and deciding that it might be rather a worthy sample of study, Miss Sequoia pulled out her third fresh ball of the day and launched it straight at her fainted foe, hoping to claim this cheeky chap as one of her own…

“Looks like we’re gathering plenty of samples today!” Giving a small pump of her fist as a pokéball now carrying a brand new Diglett is taken to her PC, Sophie smirks and folds her arms for a second in a manner that makes it look like she is showing off for a camera or something. No such means of recording available, at least to her knowledge but rather the young woman simply going with the momentum of her victory, Miss Sequoia basked in a feeling of accomplishment for a moment or two before attending to the partner that helped her achieve this victory.
“A spectacular display, Madam!” Grinning from ear to ear with pride in both herself and her Pokémon as she approached the swollen cheeked young woman, after dabbing the injury that her short Lolita had endured with a similar healing salve to what she had applied to the Delibird, Sophie moved her hand to the top of her dark looking partners head and gave it a gentle scruff. Madam seeming to object almost immediately to this playful display of affection, after pushing the stone she had collected into the palm of her trainer the pouty little miss pulled away and began fixing her hairstyle, seeming to find discomfort in the notion of even having one hair out of place.
“Heheheheh, I know, I know… You don’t like looking messed up?” Recognising the vanity as a trait so perfectly Madam that she couldn’t help but giggle as she saw it, Sophie decided to stop teasing her Gothorita and focus on the strange gem she now had in her hand. Still glowing… Doesn’t look any worse the wear for that ‘trouble’? Turning the lightly luminous little stone over in her hand and glad that she couldn’t see any chips or even scratches on it, the professor found it astounding how smooth the surfaces and straight the edges were on this odd item. Feeling almost like an expertly cut diamond or other precious mineral, it didn’t seem like this mysterious piece had been dragged from the earth and almost looked like it had been crafted by hand for a purpose.
HUUURAAAOOWWW!!!
A sudden howling cry breaking the attention that the pink haired girl had been giving to her prize, from deeper within the mineshaft something seemed to hammer the ground, looking like it was using its arms to propel it along. Fists slamming into the earth in tandem as a floating mix of head and body bobbed along, without legs the rocky Pokémon known as Geodude sprinted toward Sophie, looking eager for a fight.
They’re usually the type who are spoiling for a good fight… Recognising this arm-rolling rock quickly and bobbing her shoulders as it moved toward her, Miss Sequoia had fought more than a few of this species in her days as a trainer and was not particularly impressed or intimidated by this rookie form of opponent. Knowing, however, that she wasn’t about to be able to pass by such a belligerent brute without a battle, Sophie lifted a pair of Pokéballs from her belt and decided to settle this match quickly and decisively.
“You’ve done enough for now, Madam…” Pointing the first of her dual orbs toward the partner she had used to best the Diglet in the minutes before and deciding she was due a break, a laser light pulled the Lolita into the ball for rest and recovery while someone else entered the fray. “OK, your turn Kusanagi!” Tossing out a fresh fighter with one hand as the other one stowed her Gothorita, from the splitting sphere sprang a slender serpent that seemed to have a leaf for a tail. The grassy reptile known as Snivy entering the fray, she directed a sharp hiss toward the bounding boulder that was coming toward her and with a speed that seemed effortless compared to the clumsy fashion that the Geodude was moving, Sophie’s snake moved forward with little fear toward their craggy adversary and seemed keen to get the battle underway.
“Nice! Hit it fast and hard with a Leaf Blade, Kusa!” Sophie smiling and finding herself impressed with the enthusiasm and efficiency that was shown by a partner she hadn’t had much experience with, the trainer nodded in approval and offered a fast command to get this fight over and done with. Knowing that a Geodude suffered from a double disadvantage when it came to all things grassy, as the serpent that was summoned swept around in and arc and lashed out with its tail like a wild and wicked halberd, the two crossed paths and Miss Sequoia knew what outcome to expect even before the attack had been delivered.
“Heh…” The result going entirely as Miss Sequoia had predicted, after a second of quietness after the clash, the rocky enemy that Kusanagi had rushed to confront groaned and slumped over, easily beaten by a fighter that had completely outclassed it. The Snake turning around and brushing the tip of her nose with one of the tiny paws she had, Sophie couldn’t help but giggle as she spotted her new partner folding her arms much in a manner similar to how the trainer herself had done in the victory minutes before. Wondering if this was a coincidence or somehow a habit had rubbed off on this egg raised little warrior, the professor shook her head and pressed on, confident that the tough hide of this particular prone Pokémon would protect it even if it was left stunned for a while…

“Hm?” The battling boulder something of a distant memory as the damsel plunged deeper into the darkness, as the light of her headlamp began to dim and flicker, Sophie Sequoia frowned and lifted the item off her head. Could the batteries be running out? The stream of light that the torch that had been incorporated into her borrowed piece of headwear something of a lifeline down here, though the blue eyes of the beauty had adjusted enough for her to see a few feet into the darkness without the aid, it would certainly be a rather haphazard approach to try and press on without it. Certainly leaving herself prone to tripping over an unexpected outcrop or falling foul of a creature jumping out at her in the dark, the professor turned her bulb bearing bonnet over and found herself surprised by something else that had been ‘using’ the item.
“W-Wah!” Shrieking in a girlish fashion as something small and almost fluffy seemed to hop away from her hand as the poked around in the dimness to find the battery cover, Sophie scanned her environment to see what had leapt off her hardhat but did not manage to pick up what it was immediately. A tiny little Pokémon hard to see even in the daylight, though its removal from her headwear seemed to return the lamp to full function, it still seemed to take several ‘sweeps’ of light across the ground around her until she found a small shape trembling in the darkness.
“O-Oh, uhm, sorry if I startled you?” Blinking as she focused the hardhat she held in her hand on something that was smaller even than a mouse and looking a little bit dazed by the light that was bathing its body, Sophie took a step forward slowly and squinted as she tried to get a proper look at what had been hitching a ride on her helmet for who knows how long. Stooping down slightly and peering at something that looked like a hairy little insect, the tiny scale of the critter made it hard to identify initially, but once she did Miss Sequoia found a lot about this ‘encounter’ making sense to her.
“Joltik…?” Recognising that lightly coloured body and hunger for electrical energy, though it took the professor a few seconds in the blackness of these tunnels to realize who her humble hitchhiker was, the discovery made Sophie giggle softly. Oh yes, they do like to eat up any electric they find… The underwhelming size and those large eyes making the furry opportunist look rather cute, the young woman regarded the hungry little thing for a few seconds before quietly understanding why it had sought to ‘latch onto’ her torch.
I’ve heard of them nibbling at plug sockets, but never batteries? Running her fingers smoothly over the hardhat she had carried and finding a tiny little split in its surface, though the young woman had no idea how long she had been carrying this electric eater along, it had certainly been given ample time to ‘break into’ the housing for her headwear and sample some of the energy that blessed it. No doubt a small and hungry Pokémon such as this starved for its natural diet in an environment where power sources tended to be rather sparse, the professor couldn’t help but feel sorry for the trembling tick and pushed her hand into one of the pouches to pull out a fresh battery from it.
“Here you go, little guy…” Offering something small and cylindrical that was charged with electricity to the little bug like she might have done a handful of food to something with a more conventional diet, Sophie held the battery in her fingers, deciding that maybe this lonely little bug might be happier outside of the mine. “You know, I have a big lab outside of here with plenty of plugs and power lines and even a few generators, and I’m sure we wouldn’t miss the small amount of electricity a little guy like you would eat?”

“Awwww…!” Chuckling and letting out a little squeak of joy as the cute little critter poked at the power source before seeming to latch onto it like a tiny baby and bottle, Sophie giggled and scooped both the miniature monster and the item she had given it up in her palm, smiling as she watched over them.
Letting out a little sigh of satisfaction as she looked at how docile this tiny creature had become and making a mental note to coax it into a pokéball later on, the young woman stepped off and moved a little bit deeper into the cave. The lamp above her head no longer flickering now that the hungry little bug had been given something else to focus on, Sophie marched on through the cave with her new friend in one hand, delving deeper and deeper in the earth until finally hitting something that the beam of light she cast made look rather magnificent.
How pretty! A wall of jewels waiting for her at the bottom of the shaft, as the gleaming ray that Miss Sequoia’s headwear provided made dozens of objects glisten, the young woman marvelled at the sight for a few seconds, tilting her head from one side to the other to make the surface shimmer before pulling out her pick from her tool belt. It would be greedy to take them all, but I should be fine grabbing a few ‘samples’ for study… Licking her lips and wondering just what was the nature of these glittering stones, Sophie lifted the bug she was carrying onto her shoulder and set to work to gather a modest but useful harvest…
