Walking out into the main part of Alterna, Niso would have been worried if he didn't have a very easily excused disguise today. Having worked with Sera to make presents for Christmas, Niso and his Mimikyu had picked up some more arts and crafts as a hobby in the month or so since, Mimikyu tending to make himself additional costumes so he wasn't a Pikachu all the time, while Niso tended to help while also making just idle knick knacks he tended to break or throw out the next day. Still, it had provided him with his current Mask, while it looked a bit scary, the fact he was wearing it with a Mimikyu on his shoulder and a normal set of clothes otherwise likely took away from the fear it could induce a bit, making Niso look more like an odd man that was just way too into Mimikyu. Niso was in town today for said Mimikyu, like his Golisopod, he was one of the few Pokemon Niso had that liked to be friendly, and he'd been itching to get to know some more Pokemon and make friends. Not about to deny him after being so helpful lately, from his contest performance to his handy aid in arts and crafts, Niso had took the little guy to one of Alterna's more popular parks, placing the tiny fairy type down on the grass from his shoulder. 『Now remember~』 He began, his mask hiding a smile that was clear enough in his tone. 『If any of them give you trouble, you come to me, and I give THEM trouble~』 The two shared hidden sweet smiles before Niso pulled a small cloth costume out of his pocket, flicking it out to reveal the Wobuffet costume the Mimikyu had been working on lately, the little disguise addict taking it excitedly, and running into the bushes to change, handing Niso the removed Pikachu costume before rushing off to play with some other pokemon. Niso himself moved to one of the benches, still wearing his creepy mask, sitting down on a bench next to a mother who was looking towards her kids in the playground. He leaned over, ignoring how unnerved she seemed by his mask, especially as it's weight dipped it to whatever side he was leaning, his eyes peering through the thin black fabric over the eyes, speaking nonchalantly. 『Which of those little cretins is yours?~』 Suffice to say he soon had the bench to himself.

Ending up in Alterna… I might have rambled on a bit too much? Feeling something of a country mouse that had suddenly found himself stuck in the big city, with his legs sore from the slow and largely accidentally lengthy hike, Joe Matsuda sighed and tugged at the straps of the pack he was wearing wearily and was glad to see that there might be some respite in sight. Having stumbled more by chance than judgement into the confines of what appeared to be a park or other such outdoor recreation area, in front of him lay the ultimate prize for a man whose muscles and bones were not quite as enduring as they once had been; a bench.
“Goodness me!” Letting out a small note of relief as he slipped the bag he had been carrying off his shoulders and let it droop slowly down to the ground, with a sigh Joe slumped against wood that had never before in his life seemed so desirable. Most of the benches taken but there being one that seemed to only occupied by a small figure, perhaps a boy that for the moment Mr Matsuda paid little heed, while it had been rude of him to simply assume he could take the seat the old man had noticed as he aged that people in general seemed far less offended by habit of the elderly.
“Once you get to my time in life, you always seem to be looking for the next place to rest your legs?” This politeness or pity something of a boon that could be useful to exploit in Joe’s estimation, after letting a little of his breath catch up with him the brown eyes that sat behind his glasses flicked toward the shape with whom he sat on the bench to get a better look at, and was surprised by what he found.
Now that’s an unusual piece of headwear? Even eyes that were as old and weary as Joe’s not lacking such clarity that he could ignore the bizarre, sack-like adornment that the person next to him was sporting, unlike some who might gasp or shriek or show some other form of surprise at what he saw, Joe simply seemed to let his vision linger for a second or two of subdued shock.
“You know I’ve never seen a hat quite like that one?” A slow smile spreading across the face of the old man as he took in a mask that might have seemed more at home upon the head of a scarecrow than a person, for all of the absurdity of the image all that Mr Matsuda could feel was the warmth of amusement at this odd figure he had stumbled across.
“I suppose even at my age I can find a surprise or two by looking in the right place, eh?” Nodding at the fellow nearby and continuing on even if he didn’t much care for a conversation with a geezer like himself, after shaking his head and giving a soft chuckle Joe pulled his bag before himself and started rummaging inside it, but for what he would not yet reveal…

Niso's eyes primarily focused on his Mimikyu didn't notice the older man who was rocking up nearby till he plopped himself down so readily and shifted the weight on the planks of the wooden bench. Now Niso was scrawny, but the bench didn't tip to one side, he could just feel the wood bend a little under him. His eyes instinctively shifted to the right before realizing his hood blocked most of the view, needing to turn his whole head to take in the old man now sharing his bench, head tilting to the side the best expression he could muster with the full facial cover, the kinked ears of the mask swaying a little with each little motion.
『Oh I dunno, I'm already looking for that!~ Why stand when you can sit?』 To be polite to the pregnant lady on the tube? Possibly but he never was the kind to have manners. His head turned back to Mimikyu for a moment, watching it ride the back of a Torkoal, excitedly run circles on the shell and bringing a light chuckle to Niso himself, only turning his head back tot he man as he seemed to continue to address him...really? Not gonna...move away from the frightening youth with the scary mask? Huh. Well he supposed he'd came here to let Mimikyu be social, why not be social himself?~ Why not get used to talking to old people? He might be one himself in a couple decades.
『Oh I doubt you have, I made it myself. Well, with the help of my Mimikyu!~ He me and my girlfriend got into arts and crafts for christmas, so we thought we'd make a hobby of making things together. He made that costume, I made this mask. He's a wobuffet, I'm a Mimikyu!~』Chipper enough despite the muffling of his mask, Niso leaned forward and peered into the bag as the old man rummaged through it, trying to get a look inside. 『Heh. I hope there are still surprises. I've got a looooooong life ahead of me~』

A boy? The response that he got from the person at his side seeming to have the sort of sound one might expect of a teenage male, with the mask obscuring much of the appearance that his ‘bench mate’ possessed, Joe relied mainly on the voice of this unknown soul to get a clue of whom he was conversing with. Not particularly bothered who he spoke to really as he tended to talk the hind legs off a donkey, it was useful information all the same as was the explanation that he was offered for the unusual piece of apparel.
“A Mimkyu as a Wobbufet…?” Looking up from his bag for a moment as the boy nearby mentioned his Pokémon, for a second the rich eyes of Mr Matsuda scanned the park as his fingers moved through the various things he had stuffed deep into his pack, until wrapping around something that would naturally have found its way right to the bottom. “Ah yes, seems like an energetic one?” Spotting something a round blueness that reminded him of that familiar Johto region sight, Joe chuckled at the enthusiasm of the creature and quietly admired its passion if nothing else. Not exactly appearing to be making itself more than a nuisance to the other Pokémon of the park but the old man assuming this was simply how this Alolan prankster tended to bond, with their common fondness for dressing up the bag burrower could see why this stranger and his Pokémon got along already.
“There we go…!” Smirking to himself as he finally seized the item he had been searching for and plucked it free, though several other items like a spare shirt and a towel spilled onto the ground, Joe didn’t care very much as he retrieved a portable stove he had been carrying. Scooping up the items he had dropped before pulling a teapot out as well followed by water, for a second he was rather absorbed in what he was doing and paid little attention to his surroundings, seeing nothing particularly wrong about boiling his kettle even in this public environment.
“Oh, I hope you don’t mind?” Remembering his company once his stove had been set up with the round pot above it and smiling at the masked boy as he placed some dried leaves inside it, Joe leaned back into his seat as his pot began to boil and brew by his feet. “There’s nothing quite like a cup of tea to take in the scenery with, I find? You’re welcome to join me, I have a couple of cups in here at least…” Flashing another grin toward the stranger he had sat with and offering a drink to him as a kind of apology for behaviour of his own that some might see as awkward, Joe let out a sigh and let his brown eyes run over the park as he felt himself starting to relax, hoping that the youngster nearby might enjoy a spot of tea with him?

Niso nodded along as the old man seemed to find his Mimikyu, while he himself got a little more comfy. The old guy seemed not at all unnerved by his own weird attired, but that just made Niso all the more curious about him. If he was in a hostage situation and the old man wasn't scared, then he might get a bit pissed and dislocated his shoulder, but he'd started to learn people like that were more interesting...or just generally had the capacity to talk to him in the first place, and he liked that sometimes, to an extent at least.
『Ah he's energetic alright!~ Just like me...ay you're gonna get that dirty.』 Reaching down Niso snagged the loose clothes falling out the bag, pushing himself up to crouch on the bench rather than sit on it, holding the shirt out infront of himself and carefully folding it up before placing it between them on the bench. Folding his clothes was a heavily ingrained habit from the days he was more sane, and he was still trying to get rid of it. Managing to spot the stove as it was pulled out, his surprised nearly made it through his mask, and at the offer he gave a light shrug.
『I'm more a teabag guy than tea-leaves, but I'll have a taste grandad!』Helping with the setting up, his eyes flicked over to the old man. 『Heavy thing...you musta nearly broke your back carrying this around. Long walk from home? Doubt you'd carry this if you lived in the town.』

“The tea bag has certainly proven a convenience, spreading the joys of tea to those who don't have the time or expertise to mix their own tea…” The comment of the boy rousing perhaps just a hint of pride in his calling, Joe smirked at his masked friend as the kettle bubbled away near his foot. “However, you might find that something prepared by a careful hand will surprise you!” Sure that he could change the mind of the boy with the special blende he carried with him, the old man expected that something made by an expert hand with the finest materials was sure to bowl him over and was a little bit excited to see his reaction now.
“Oh, it’s not too heavy really? I might not have much of my youth left but having spent most of my life carting my possessions on my back, I suppose carrying these things seems rather natural to me?” Never much having worried about what he was carrying, after modestly rebuffing the show of concern, Joe noted from the soft hissing his pot was starting to give off that their tea was nearly ready to be decanted and went hunting in his bag again.
“There’s not much of a distance really, I’m rooted in Alto these days so it’s only an afternoon’s walk away or so?” Producing a pair of mismatched teacups of a distinctly east Asian design, he set them on the flat of the bench before pulling out a small strainer to sit on one of them, as the hiss of his pot turned into a high pitched whistle, Mr Matsuda chatted idly as he set about fixing the drinks for the two of them.
“And what about you, my young friend? Is this your local park or did you just find yourself in the area and decide to indulge your partner?” Nodding toward the frolicking little Pokémon that the boy had indicated as his own as he turned the small stove off and began to pour a rich brown coloured fluid in the cups, Joe rattled the strainer softly over each of the mugs to soak out the most flavoursome parts of the tea whilst keeping the shredded leaves away from the drinks.
“There we go, a little Lapsang of my own blend for you?” When he was done a pair of steaming cups filled with a black tea that gave off a smoky aroma of pine and whisky, when the boy tasted the cup he would find that the flavour was in no great need for milk, sugar or cream. This particular essence tending to be smoother and lacking the bitterness of what was used in a bag tea, with a small and curious smile Joe offered the warm clay jar to the young man nearby, eager to see what he might make of it?

Shifting a little to make room for the tea being prepared between them, but still not sitting down, Niso tilted his head to express curiosity through his mask. He knew people could make tea like this but it never really occurred to him to see that...done in the wild, so to speak. It was done behind the counter of a Chinese resteraunt or something, and as much as he denied it, Niso was sure that stuff must have weighed more than making a simple cup of tea was worth. Heck he was sure if he tried to lift that he'd fall backwards.
『Alto huh? Guess that's not too far』 The Hot spring town right? That meant it was a downhill trek...yeesh the journey back- 『Must be murder going home though. I just live nearby myself...relatively so~ The Wasteland is my 'local park'. I actually bought up some land when this old couple were too scared to live there anymore!~』 He seemed a little too chipper about the fact he'd swiped a house from an old scared couple, but it was his house now and it was a short walk from his creation! Perfect place to live, especially since most people were too scared to go that close to the wasteland.
『Really though I am just here for Mimikyu. He's been really helpful lately and he deserves some fun~』Glancing over to the pokemon as it played a game of tag with the other small pokemon, he glanced back to the cups of tea as they were poured, taking the cup offered to him and narrowing his eyes through the mask, lifting it up to just over his nose before taking a long, slow sip...smoother than he was expecting, little hot on the tongue but he didn't have to worry about burns...『That's...surprisingly tasty!~』

“Once one has gotten used to trekking over ranges like Mt Silver’s or Coronet’s, other slopes seem to be rather easy by comparison? Even this many years later, the trekking I did in younger years continues to support my old bones!” Perhaps a hint of touched by the casual concern that the masked young man had shown, as Joe lifted up his own cup of steaming hot tea and blew on it, his eyes grew a little mistier as he remembered himself looking far less scruffy and silver maned. Feeling now almost like he was looking at a stranger by how much he had changed, the reflection he now cast in the dark surface of his tea seemed wholly different to the person he was now imagining.
“The wasteland? Oh goodness, I’m not surprised people wanted to get away from it!” The nuggets of information that the boy offered making the eyes of Mr Matsuda wide, he remembered the couple of times his absent minded wandering had led him into the dead-looking land and could well imagine less able people being completely overwhelmed.
“And yet you can call it home? Seems you have more feathers to your bow than simple costume making, my young friend… The monsters that have taken up living there aren’t the stuff an amateur could handle!” Impressed by the notion that whoever it was beneath this mask was managing to survive on the cusp of the most dangerous place the land had to offer, whilst he would never wish to spoil the mood of the conversation by being too forward and nosy, Joe found himself curious as to exactly who was lurking behind that sack-like covering.
“Ah yes, as someone who has dabbled in his time with Pokémon myself, I can definitely admire one who knows how to appreciate his friends!” Smiling as the young man let slip that today’s little venture was something of a reward for his little phantom friend, the part of him that was once a professor felt a little pride in the sentiment that this stranger shared. “Pokémon are more than tools or even pets, in many ways more like children I’ve always found?” Having seen far too many people in his long life that seemed to view these magical monsters as weapons or a means to an end, it always felt refreshing to find a soul who treated the creatures like the treasures they were. Nodding as the boy and taking a small sip from his own cup of tea, Joe made little effort to creep a glimpse of who was truly beneath the mask; in its own way it didn’t really matter to him now.
“Oh goodness, I’m glad you enjoy it!” The creases around the mouth of the man growing larger as he gave a big toothy grin at the lad’s satisfaction, Joe gave a small and gentle chuckle that spoke of his own delight at introducing this young fellow to something new and delicious. “Hahahahaha! It would certainly be rather damning if you didn’t, I own a Tea Shop after all!” Laughing to himself more than anyone and slapping his knee as if to emphasize his point, after relaxing into the back of the bench the old man lifted his mug up and blew on it again before taking another sip, finding the taste all the smoother and sweeter to enjoy it with a friend…

As the old man talked about Pokemon being like children, Niso snorted to the point he nearly spit out a mouthful of tea. Covering his mouth with his sleeve and shaking his head slowly. 『Sorry~ Not exactly my view there. I have 3 friends tops and no desire for children. Pokemon are just a means to an end, and at best I consider only 1 of my Pokemon amongst my...』Niso's words dipped off, thinking briefly about how he'd reacted to losing Karlak a few months ago...now and then the idea of that dragon starving somewhere clawed at the back of his brain. Karlak was by no means his friend, the dragon tolerated him at most but. 『...I-I only have 3 friends, no kids. The friend in the top hat is a maybe anyway. Anyone who dosn't have red claws or pink hair just tolerates me at best.』
He lifted his mask again to take a sip of tea to shut himself up, turning in his crouched position and falling to sit, crossing his arms and grumbling at himself. Since when did he actually start CARING what the fuck happened to his Pokemon? He used to kick them when they didn't do as they were told afterall...
『...Tea shop?』 He mumbled, looking to focus his mind elsewhere.

Noting the way that the almost ever-present cheeriness that his young masked friend had shown so far had begun to taper off, Joe paused silently for a moment or two, recognising the soreness that his comment had seemed to cause. “Oh my, sorry, it seems perhaps I‘m projecting the sensibilities of a lonely old man a little too heavily?” Speaking in a softer tone as he offered a small apology for leading the conversation toward a sobering point for the boy, the tea maker blew on his cup and glanced toward the teen toward his side, hoping he hadn’t struck too sensitive a nerve.
Seems I drew a clumsy conclusion… Pausing quietly and not wanting to rush the lad toward any other conclusion that might have caused a further dip in his upbeat manner, Mr Matsuda took a couple more sips of his drink as he watched over the park, not wanting to push the boy until he was ready to talk again.
“Ah, yes, a tea shop!” Smiling broadly as the boy spoke again and seemed to imply a mild curiosity about the place that he had come from, though the less lively tone of his voice seemed to speak volumes of where the mind of this unknown young man was, Joe was happy to rattle along and at least hope to provide some distraction for the more downcast lad. “Well, I think I said I came from Alto? I run a small shop that sells some fine tea, snacks and a few sundries along one of the trails to the north? It’s a little bit off the beaten path so to speak but a very scenic locale!” Grinning and beginning to ramble away with details of his humble establishment to the boy, as he spoke the old man glanced toward the masked features of the fellow at his side and found himself wishing he could see maybe a hint of them.
“It’s in the foothills of the mountains but not really too hard to get to, I mean I can make it there and I am far from a Spring Chicken!” Hoping that the accidental dip in the conversation hadn’t spoiled what had so far been a rather nice little chat with this stranger, Joe laughed as he offered a playful joke and continued to babble somewhat aimlessly. “Just around the shop is nice clearing with a little pond and plenty of trees. My patrons seem to enjoy taking a break from hiking to have a nice cup as they look at the scenery and the Pokémon that live there? I often let my own wander around there and the wild ones are pretty accustomed to having people nearby?”

『Nah, I'm sure a lot of people would agree with ya oldie. I'm just not one of them』 Casually shrugging off the train of thought, Niso finished his tea with a final chug of what remained and placing it down on the bench between them, shifting to sit on the back of the bench in such a way that would have made it tip if Joe hadn't been sitting with him, looking over to Mimikyu as it seemed to run back towards them, the top half of it's body tilting back as it jumped up between Niso's feet, just needing a safe place to adjust the stuffing in it's costume till it was nice and stable again before rushing back out. 『Pokemon are just tools to me』He said all the same 『Even now seeing him happy is just a tool to my own enjoyment~ If making him miserable made me happy, I'd do it all the same~』He had with other pokemon afterall, many times.
At the mention of the tea shop, Niso listened carefully and thought of his own home.『The land around my house is pretty flat and empty, no pokemon for miles...I'm trying to plant some flowers though. My girlfriend likes roses.~』

“Perhaps you judge yourself too harshly, young man?” Feeling that urge that an old man sometimes did to offer a bit of advice and encouragement, Joe frowned slightly when his friend mentioned a perceived selfishness about his motivation for doting on his Mimikyu. “It sounds like the happiness of your Pokémon is tied into your own, and to me that seems like it can’t be an entirely bad thing?” Looking over his glasses toward the masked lad by his side and showing him the deep colour of his eyes, for a second he let a more serious sentiment slip out from beneath his usual upbeat manner, hoping that he might be able to help this unusual boy see things from a different perspective.
“Oho, your young lady friend!” The mention of roses and the girlfriend reminded Joe that the boy had mentioned having a special someone earlier on, he leaned back into his chair and returned to a light hearted air, giving a gentle but approving chuckle at the success of this young man in romance. “She must be a special lady if you’re making your home one for her as well?” Grinning at the boy for a second or two before letting his eyes slip away to hide the slight sadness that filled his eyes, the mind of Mr Matsuda rolled back more years than this lad had probably been alive.
“Having a good woman in your life can make it seem very different, can’t it…?” The eyes of Joe a little bit misty as he remembered his wife, the words of the man seemed to grow a little softer and quieter as his mind drifted from the moment, recalling a different man who once enjoyed a rather different life to the one he had now…

『Eeeeh...suppose having emotions isn't all bad I guess』 He hummed a little as he helped Mimikyu adjust his costume between his legs, helping him steady the head while he re-did some light stitching with his black tendrilly hands, making sure the costume was stable again before rushing off towards the other pokemon to play again, Niso resting forward a little and watching him a bit before shifting his eyes back to Joe, the old man clearly getting a little teary eyed but something he said resonating with him in a weird way.
『Well no it's not her home I just like to make it nice for her so she stays more. We both agreed she'll just sleep by whenever she's in town...and....actually when did she last...not sleep there...』Niso tipped his head back as he thought. Sera used to travel a lot but now it seemed like nights where she wasn't in the house were getting rarer and rarer...was she....noooooo. He'd know if she was living with him now right...? His eyes narrowed behind his mask, holding up a finger to the old grey haired man. 『Yeah yeah they're wonderful-』Wow that sounded dismissive, and while still reaching inside his jacket for his phone he turned to him with a little more vigor in his voice. 『Oh no I mean...yeah. My girlfriend was...is great. She really changed my life but...ah fuck it I kinda got something on my mind gimme a sec』
Flipping out his phone, Niso simply sent a text to Sera while his brain had the topic in mind, his thumbs clicking away, not the kind to delete anything and thus his words getting a little rambly
'Hey Sera!~ Hope your doing well today, Mimikyu's enjoying the trip to the park and showing off that wobuffet costume he made. Don't worry I'm not making any scenes its actually pretty chill here. I scared off a mom but if she didn't wanna keep her seat on the bench her loss right? Anywhooooooo this weird guy with tea came over and he made me some tea and its actually surprisingly good we should really get some sometime. So we got to talking and he said some batshit stuff about pokemon being like children yada yada yada but then he said something about making my home a home for you since you came up and so now I'm wondering are you living with me? Love you kisses 8D I'll bring home takeout!~ xxooXXooXoXoXXXXoooXoXooooooXXXXXXXoXoXoXoXOXOXOXO.... X!!!'
Resting the phone in his lap, Niso turned his eyes back to Joe and, a little too chipperly asked. 『So!~ Who's the lady who changed your life ya old fart?~』

Seems he might not be fully able to accept his intentions, perhaps? But his heart is in the right place… A little bit amused to see that once again an assertion he had made seemed to be denied and yet not entirely disproven by this masked lad, Joe chose this time not to call much attention to this fact and simply smiled and sipped at his tea. Enjoying the energy of the young man even if he did seem a little bit flippant, the old geezer chuckled lightly as his young friend seemed to fall over his words a little, not minding much as the boy pulled out his phone and began to tap away on it at a speed that only a youth could manage. Nimble handed but feeling like something of a dinosaur as he looked over the way the youth seemed to so efficiently use his device, Joe was a little humbled to think he might never be able to match the savvy that the boy showed with his device.
“The lady that...?” Taken a little by surprise as the energetic youngster seemed to take his turn asking questions, for a second the grey haired fella blinked in surprise. Overlooking the playful insult that had come with the question but perhaps just a tiny bit sore to speak of his wife, after a second of hesitance Joe shifted into the old crutch of the fool in order to avoid the issue. “Now, now, at my age what makes you think there’s only been one lady like that?” Breaking into a loud guffaw as he attempted to deflect the issue away with his clowning, though the truth was that he had only really been in love with one woman and that particular chapter had ended badly, the old man saw no harm in being a bit liberal with the truth in this encounter.
“Surely a man of my age has had the chance to get plenty of experience, even in matters of romance, no?” Not particularly wanting to linger on a topic that had something of a sour ending, though he might have felt a bit guilty for deceiving the boy, it certainly seemed a better way to take their conversation than a road filled with the pitfalls presented by his heartbreak…

Niso rested his phone between his leggs and made sure not to look at it too much waiting for Sera to text back, focusing on the old man beside him and narrowing his eyes as he spoke. He'd been misty eyed about the woman changing his life a second ago, and now was saying their was more than one? Well with who Sera was he supposed he didn't have any right to judge...he did have a right to call-
『Bullshit』He held a rather flat expression under his mask, narrowing his eyes. He was no expert in emotions but- 『No one gets that teary eyed over numerous women. I may not know much about people but I know a lot about love at this point, and that is the look you get thinking about someone you lost, or losing someone you care about. Now come on old man, I'm all ears.』He pulled at the ears on his MImikyu hat.
