Crystal Onix could be really cool, BUT I wanna point out that in canon it was weak against Fire! So it would either need very different types and/or a--....... I was gonna say custom ability but actually Dry Skin is perfect for giving water immunity and fire weakness. :O
Rock/Ice and Steel/Ice with Dry Skin could be neat (though LOL @ that poor Steelix on a hot day), and ice is considered a sort of mineral so the way Onix eats soil and takes in the minerals from it ('this is what makes its body so solid') it's implied that the composition of what it eats could change its own structure. What one was doing in the Orange Islands would be a mystery but given it was only one and such an anomaly it would actually work fine to assume someone brought it in from a colder region and either released it or lost it there. :V
It'd be cool to do a bit more with Steelix's design, too, and maybe go all out with extra crystals on its Mega given the crystaline theme. But yeah, could be a lot of fun~

Aha, I remember that Onix from TV, I had thought to suggest it but figured since Steelix was Mega-evo capable it might not be an option buuuuut if we're getting behind it, great!
If we're looking to redesign it a bit as an Ice Type, maybe the spines from it's body could be icicles or something?
Since we're throwing designs for Onix's line on the table, I had an idea that I thought might be cool...
A SKELETON ONIX
Basically, this form of Onix might be from Carrefor, and would look like a large snake, the 'sections' being like vertibrae and having a ghost typing, like an ancient fossil that has come back to life because of this spooky place? One might be able to take the basic Onix shape, make the head look more skull like and give it glowing eyes or something? Maybe the lore/pokédex entries could say that this ghostly creature tends to dive through the earth, putting together bodies made of bones for itself? Perhaps starts out small and just adds larger parts when it finds skeletons of dino Pokémon and such?
I'd imagine the Onix could be Rock/Ghost and the Steelix could be Steel/Ghost, or we could go for something that because 'bone' is less durable than rock and steel, we could flip the stats around a bit, maybe make it more of a special attacker than a physical one?
We also don't necessarily have to keep the "It's called Steelix so it must have steel typing" given that Sandshrew/slash has variants that are Ice/Steel?
Since I feel like the idea for optioning Veriants with Mega Evolutions feels more 'open' than before, I'd also like to throw forward the idea of righting a wrong that I feel has been present since Generation 1;
A TRUE DRAGON GYARADOS
Whether one wants to provide a Magikarp veriant is up to 'management', but not essential given Cubone>Alolan Marowak? But anyway, given that Gyarados looks like an asian water dragon, it always mystified me it gains flying rather than dragon as a sub typing?
Perhaps this might make it a Dragon that is confined to the oceans, but I'd like to see a Gyarados that emphasizes maybe pride more than wrath as it's sin? To my mind Dragon types tend to be held in great esteem in the world, so should a Magikarp evolve into this variation, I feel rather than being angry at its former life of mockery and mistreatment it may become vain and arrogant, feeling superior?
I think also if we take this route, we might finally have a fully evolved serpentine Dragon Pokémon? I always felt a bit of disappointment that the Majestic Dragonair does not evolve into something even more magnificent and serpentine?
As for appearance changes, I'd go for a more greenish colour and perhaps less wild and more regal appearance? Perhaps make the crest above the Gyarados's brow yellow/golden and arcing upward like a crown, maybe with an extra 'branch' on either side to complete the effect?
As for stat changes, I don't think they'd be huge, maybe just swapping out say Ice Fang and Hurricane for more dragonlike moves such as Dragon Tail and Dragon Rush?

I thought of Ice but I wasn't sure if I was abke to convince anyone that the crystal like body was actually ice crystals and not rock crystals. So if the ability is Dryskin then does this mean this variant can't have like a hidden ability? And what about as steelix? Since it mega evolves how would the ability change or is thsi fine?

Apologies for the delay getting back. I'd actually forgotten the whole "we probably won't use anything that Mega Evolves" thing before, but I could imagine maybe an exception for Crystal Onix specifically solely because the concept is canon.
Also, apologies that all of staff has been so busy lately, but we definitely haven't forgotten about the Veriant project, and will hopefully get a subboard and a proper form up for them soon so every potential line can have its own discussion thread.

Managed to come up with some ideas on how a few more of my suggestions ended up becoming the way they are; admittedly, the one for Growlithe and Arcanine is a bit of a stretch, but it was the best I could come up with.
If you're curious, I edited my previous post to include them.

er, Danielle Darksol...not to be rude, but the stat increases/decreases need to be equal. Like lowering a stat by 20 to increase one by 20. Or you could lower one by 20 and raise two by 10 (or vice versa). but lowering one by 50 to raise one by 90 is definitely not an equivalent exchange. Also, pretty sure Pokemon with a very specific gimmick (Illusion, in this case) are being left out, though that'd be up to staff whether Zorua/Zoroark counts among them.

What Akira said, plus that exceeding the biggest stat change numbers in canon (40 points on Raticate), plus copying canon if we do Crystal Onix is one thing but copying another fan site's idea is considered at best very poor taste and at worst malicious theft. x3;;; So yeah we should not do that.
