“And don’t forget to check the pressure threshold, if it goes too high it’ll—”
“Luke relax…” Orion sighed.
“Orion—”
“I know… I got it just… just relax. I got it. I’ll keep an eye on the pressure recordings and make sure the intake valve is fine and have Jazz word on X, Y, Z cat-scan magnets, interdimensional whatever… I know…”
A small chorus of beeps filled the space between what should have been a lull in the conversation between the two friends. The sound of a machine compressing air and a deep breath in broke that. “I know you know…” was the response.
Orion’s gaze flickered up from the floor that it had inadvertently dropped to. Half a foot in front of him was the start of a medical bed. Resting on that tied up with chords and all kinds of machinery, Luke was laid out his head turned away from him. Orion’s gaze raised very briefly to the window just beyond— for possibly the nth time that month. It wasn’t new, aside from maybe the season slowly changing. Faraday’s supposedly best medical hospital didn’t have the greatest view in the city. A sigh escaped from him as he sat back and rubbed his thighs. “I know that you know that I know that you know that I know that you know that I know about the Secret Base…”
“Pfft.”
Orion smiled briefly, but when Luke didn’t look back, he set his elbow on his knee and rested his cheek on his hand. “So the doc says you’re on some new treatment….” He waited, but when there was no immediate response back, Orion went on. “How are you doing on that? Any better?” Yellow eyes dropped and scanned over pale, thin arms exposed above the layers and layers of medical bedding. Even with numerous intravenous nodes and needles, those arms looked so small.
“Nilly says there’s been a small change…. Not too much better though,” Luke commented.
“Ah.”
“Yeah.”
Weeks ago, there had been an argument concerning Luke’s health and Nilly that had resulted in the Nihilego ultimately no longer speaking through Luke in Orion’s presence. Orion felt guilty, but some bitter, angry part of himself justified it saying that it had started it. It was the reason Luke was sick. It was the reason there wasn’t a cure for Luke’s illness. Never mind that this illness was supposedly a vestige of cancer that had been dormant in him all along. Never mind that in a round about way, Nilly was supposedly helping Luke to fend it off. Never mind that Luke still actively sided with his personal parasite. He was sick and Orion had to blame someone.
….Anyone.
“You need anything?”
“Just for you to keep working.”
Orion winced. “Luke— I…”
“I promised Nil, Orion…. So just… please…”
Orion grimaced. A hand reached up and rubbed the side of his face harder. Nails dug in just a little before he realized exactly what he was doing and retracted his hand. “I’ll…uh… make sure to keep you updated….”
“…..Ok…”
Orion tried and failed to make conversation for a few more minutes before finally excusing himself and standing. Walking out of the room, he closed the door behind himself, only to look up again and find Indi and Luana staring at him. Lips parted and then pressed together. Orion gave a small nod. “Hey Mr. ‘n Mrs. Indigo… yeah…” he made small talk, not really, before walking passed them as they headed to Luke’s room. Very briefly, Orion paused and glanced back. The door had already closed, but he bet if he strained to hear, he could tell what was being said. Some part of him could already tell what was being said anyways. Orion coughed and walked onwards.
An elevator ride down and a sign out on some paper documents, and Orion was outside on the streets again. He could have fished out a Pokeball and flown home but instead started down the street towards the subway station. It was longer, and he’d have to go a weird way back, but…. Heh… A phone was fished out, and he quickly texted Nik that he’d be back late.
Bills were broken and passed as Orion got on the subway and sat down stretching out his legs and yawning. Ugh… he yawned a couple more times before starting to doze with the slow steady motions of the subway. Before he realized it, he was snoring. He probably should have had a Pokemon out or something.

"Really? Can't someone else--?" Hiro was regretting answering the call from the Pahala Museum. "Well yeah I know I'm on call but--.... Are you sure it can't wait until morning?" Another pause, then a long dragging sigh. "All right. Yeah I'm on my way." At least this was overtime pay.
Hiro had been ready to settle in for the night after a pretty full day, but now it seemed some equipment in the research station was acting up, and for some reason the normal maintenance wasn't answering, so it fell to Hiro to get it fixed as soon as possible. He explained the situation to the fam, then headed out. He didn't bother changing out of his sweatpants or even putting his hair up, leaving it laying long; he just threw a t-shirt on and headed for the train station.
Once on the train, he found himself quickly absorbed in his phone, to a point he wasn't really paying attention to the other passengers. He didn't even notice one of the passengers had stretched out, and as he made for a seat, he wound up tripping right over the man's feet. "Fucking--" The thud was interlaced with the clatter of his phone, which Hiro was quick to grab first. Afterward though he rolled to get back to his feet and looked at-- "Oh hey. Orion? Been a while, sorry I'm a klutz."
