Yeah, spicy was fine. This place was fine. ...He was pretty sure he'd been to this place actually even if he wasn't entirely sure if he was just mistaking it for somewhere kind of similar. And the food was good! He just had his heart set on the Favorite, heh.
"Hm?" Ah, how long had it been? "Two or three years I wanna say. Leaning toward two, I think Keone was 10, but my aunt may have just commented he'd be 10 soon or something.." The fuck was the passage of time, ha... "Brought the kids and met up with my folks and one grandmother at my aunt and uncle's place for Christmas. We were mostly just there at the ranch, though. Think the last time I really saw a lot of Alola was..."
His gaze went distant as his focus shifted deeper into his memory bank. "...Fuck me, probably getting close to ten years." Just. Damn? "I've been meaning to come back and earn a new Z-Ring for years, but I was in the hospital after the explosion, then physical therapy, then training academy when the kids talked me into not going back into service. Then I was a rookie so I had to work hard and prove myself, then I was making good progress so don't stop now, then, well, I had rank and too many people counting on me." He exhaled slowly, then let out a 'heh' at the end. "Looking back, I might've gotten a little too good at telling myself work had to come first."

Two or three years wasn’t a bad amount of time. She’d have been away from Era … close to a year now, yeah? Or was it a little over a year now? No a little under a year still. Think the last time I really saw a lot of Alola was— Dasha almost dropped the fork she’d been using.
Ten years? Even as Kai explained why, Dasha couldn’t… believe it? Process it, more like. Didn’t he love this place? Didn’t he— He had been here. It wasn’t like he hadn’t come around, but … the thought of not seeing everything at least once every couple of years just… distressed her. It physically distressed her, and as she realized it, Dasha had no idea what to do with this feeling. I might’ve gotten a little too good at telling myself work had to come first… But— but? But what. Wasn’t this why she worked so much? Wasn’t this—
“…I… know the feeling…” she finally stated, shifting and folding her arms in front of herself. “Kind of…” She clarified briefly. “When I was in Era I… didn’t go home often after a certain point. A lot of other stuff kind of kept me from going back after a certain point but… it was also just easier to say I was busy. I had things to do, personal or Interpol projects to work on…” She sighed. “But that’s… ten years is still a long time.” Even if she’d been away about half that time….

Ah.. Yeah, this didn't surprise him. ... Some part of him wished he could say he'd start denying her overtime and make sure she took her vacation days before they piled up like her recent trip again, heh. But then, he knew as long as they were a bit short-handed it was hard to deny the offer from one of his best agents, unfortunately.
...The end earned a cynical grin, though. "Probably not as long to me at least." Still too damn long, that was for sure. But he just... he had to. "Ten years for you was.. what? Boy bands? Getting your trainer's license? Sneaking out for the first time?" He was so close to being sorry but damn now he was imagining a smaller Dasha being friends with Nalani and okay he was kind of sorry but this still amused him a little too much.

Dasha’s lips pursed. Color warmed her features, and the muscles in her neck and shoulders went taut. Even if it was (mostly) true, she did not appreciate that tone or measure or— Ugh. “I was receiving Snowflake, leaving the house to travel more, and boybands could be grossly sexual.” She huffed, setting down her other utensil and standing up. “We should probably start heading towards the trial site as not to be late.” Her voice held a particular irritable sharpness. She’d make sure the meals were paid for and leave pretty promptly.
With Princess already in her possession, Dasha didn’t need a PC in order to release her. Even if it was a short flight, she’d take it over having to walk at the moment. It helped that Po town was also very much on the map and she wouldn’t quite need Kai’s direction. So instead, she ushered her Pokemon up in the air whether Kai followed or not.

Ffffaiowjiaof??? O---okay then????? Dear Arceus, he had grown so fond of her at times but she could not take a joke? Kai was honestly a little hurt and offended that she'd apparently gotten so hurt and offended. He was describing his daughter at that age, never mind that she'd been grounded for two months after sneaking out that time. He still wasn't entirely convinced her mom hadn't let her and then feigned ignorance when Kai found out and got upset, either, but he digressed. Details aside, as if he would have meant for that to be insulting. Ugh.
He'd lag a bit behind her, flying, hoping the cool air would cool her head by the time they landed, honestly. ... Somewhere in the back of his mind as they drew near, he'd realize there was some slight amusement to be taken in starting the Dark Trial with feelings of resentment, ha...

On your way past Po-town, an argument is loud enough to catch your attention. Between two people who, each in their own way, are residents of the small town, with a Mightyena between them. The very clear colors of a team skull member (or a wannabe member) clashed against the more refined colors and outfit of a faintly younger boy. Each of them were loud and arguing fiercely about the Mightyena between them.
Should you kind, trial going souls take a moment to intervene in this argument, you will learn that the two are arguing over who should take the Mightyena. Both would eagerly state their cases to a mediating third party, albeit clearly with their own biases. The general understanding of the situaton is, while the skull member clearly owns the Mightyena, and loves it dearly, he does not have the actual means to keep it well fed and trained. The younger, more wealthy looking boy however, has been insisting her take the Mightyena, not only because he would look after it far better (and perhaps grow to love it) but also because the skull member has owed him something, be it a lost item of high value, or just a straight up debt for some time.
Both of them may exagerate or straight up lie to get you to believe their case, the rich boy will state that he has seen the skull member abuse the mightyena, when that has never been true. The Skull member will talk about how the rich boy just tosses pokemon aside once he's bored with them, which is not entirely accurate. Ultimately you should mediate this argument to the best of your abilities, trying to find a way both parties can come away happy.
Should the Mightyena in any way be asked, it will seem majorly unsure. It does love it's trainer, but the growls in it's stomache are clear, and it would deeply appreciate more warm meals...even if the boy offering them seems like a rather intimidating substitute, ironically.
Should you mediate the two successfully, and pass on to the true site of the trial, a volunteer trial guide who had watched from afar will tell you how those two have been at eachother's throat for over a week, and as a show of great character, you have more than earned a pass on this trial. All you were gonna do here was chase rattata anyway. and who wants to do that in the rain eh?

The flight was relatively short-lived. Rather than land in the city, Dasha brought Princess down right in front of its walls. Petting, thanking, and returning Princess, she took in a slow breath and tried to calm down again. He thinks you’re a kid— Well duh, she was half his age, and it wasn’t like she hadn’t dealt with officers like this in Era— No but he thinks you’re a kid kid. She didn’t even know what that meant but was somehow inclined to believe it.
Rubbing her arms, Dasha grumbled to herself and waited only for Kai to land. He’d said near Po town not within the city if she remembered correctly, and she guessed that meant he either had a specific site in mind or they’d run into a trial guide like they had before. Fishing out a Pokeball, she’d release Snowflake and set a hand in her fur. The Absol frowned looking up at her but was willing to accept pets for now???

Kai landed not too long after, recalling Drason and looking to them. ...Well, to Snowflake. "Hey there, Snow..~" His tone was pleasant enough, but clearly pretty strained and tired as well. Sighing, he'd tell both, "C'mon.. I wanna say it was supposed to be a bit south of town."
They'd head that way, but it wasn't long before the argument caught their attention. At first, Kai ignored it, hoping two people were just having a quick spat. But as it wore on and they got close enough to discern a lot of the details, it bothered him more and more. As the duo and the Mightyena came clearly into view, Kai gave a long, exasperated groan. "We don't have time for this, but if we don't at least offer to help we don't deserve to be trial-goers or Interpol agents," he huffed. Quietly, as they headed that way, he mumbled, "Hopefully they'll just tell us to buzz off.." Then at least they could say they tried and were only respecting their wishes instead of turning a blind eye.
But alas, they'd have no such luck. "'Scuse me, boys. Don't suppose you need any help?" Immediately, both launched into trying to talk over the other to explain, and demanding Kai and Dasha tell the other his case was right.

Walking alongside Dasha and Kai, Snowflake would become aware of the figurative and literal division between the two. Dasha kept shooting glances and frowning heavily, and while Snowflake didn’t know exactly what had been said, she could infer just from that. Red eyes rolled, but the Absol may have walked a little closer to Dasha, pressing against her now and again in gentle affection. Dasha’s hand shifted now and again scratching the mane of her favorite Pokemon.
The sounds of an argument would catch Dasha’s attention, and as details in the way of sight and actual words came into focus, she frowned heavily. Kai’s groaned assessment had Dasha huffing softly— Fine— wait what ugh. The boys were talking fast, and it was near impossible to hear either of them and— “Shut up,” Dasha barked causing both of them to fall silent for a second. “You, speak first,” she ordered pointing at the boy in the weird black and white skull clothes. “And you speak only when he’s done.” The rich boy huffed and folded his arms. “If I have a question I will ask it.” Never mind that Kai was right there and may have had questions of his own.
After a moment, the young man in the skull gear pointed at the Mightyena and then looked at Dasha. “Listen, lady,” that wasn’t earning any brownie points and Dasha’s leer made it pretty obvious. “I… I mean…” the young man stammered for a second before huffing. “E’s tryin’ ta take mah dog away!”
“I’m rehoming-“
"Did I ask for you to speak?” Dasha snapped before even the skull member wannabe could snap back. The younger fancier boy winced and huffed again mumbling a small ‘no’. “Then wait,” was Dasha’s sharper demand.
After a couple of seconds, the skull member pipped up again. “That’s mah dawg. Ah raized ‘im since ‘e wuz a Poochyena ‘nd ‘ez mah best friend!” The other boy started to say something only to fall silent again as Dasha flashed another glare at him. “E keeps sayin’ ah dun feed ‘m right ‘r train ‘m ‘n dat ‘e could do bettah but Ah’m iz trainer!”

Kai... was almost a little afraid to speak himself after that series of commands from Dasha. But... hot damn, he couldn't say he wasn't a little impressed or very grateful either, heh. It got the boys to settle the fuck down and immediately relieved some of his mounting headache. Not to mention kind of forced each other to breathe when the other was talking.
He could see why this kid-- was he Skull or an imitator with those clothes?-- was upset. Dogs were very important. Of course his author was throwing a mental tantrum that Mightyena is literally a striped hyena without stripes, it is one of the most faithful-to-inspiration Pokemon designs and doesn't even vaguely look like a wolf by comparison but Kai himself was too busy going WHAT A GOOD DOGGO to listen so she was forced to cram a sock in it.
But then came that last bit. ...Was Dasha gonna say it? Well, she didn't fast enough if she was. "And are you feeding him right?" The Mightyena's brief cringe and gaze aversion said a bit too much.
"...I- I mean I do mah best yo! It's-- it's not like I'm out feastin' 'r somethin'. 'E eats... bout 'zwell as I do but.. Mun's been kin'a tight." He swallowed and got a bit more adamant again. "But I dun wanna lose mah best bro forever jus' cuz I took too long t' get a callback!"
"...But you are looking?"
"Course I am! My buddy's countin' on me." Ah... Kai looked to Dasha.

As Kai spoke, Dasha jolted slightly. Ah right, he was there too. As the young man replied, however, she refocused. Eyebrows knit. Blue eyes scanned over the young man’s form and then that of the Mightyena. While she couldn’t quite tell the kid’s weight from the clothes he wore, Dasha could get a better idea from the Mightyena. Her stomach tightened a little before she looked at the other young man. “And what’s your story?”
The richer young man huffed and finally uncrossed his arms. “My name is Michael Angelus Winston Elias Gates and if you can’t tell from that name then I will have you know my family is very wealthy.” Dasha’s lips twitched as she fought back a mocking laugh, and the kid went on. “I have been watching this poor Pokemon suffer for weeks now from this incompetent trainer—“
“I’M NOT—“ the team skull member piped up but shut up immediately when he received the same glare that the rich boy had.
The rich kid cleared his throat and thrust out an index finger. “I’ve been watching this poor Pokemon suffer and starve, and I will have it no longer!” The emphatic way he spoke had Dasha fighting another laugh, but she managed to maintain herself. “I can feed him well, take care of him, give him plenty of land to run on. I can do more for him than someone without a job who owes me money can!”
“I—“ the skull member couldn’t even argue right then. Instead, he looked desperately from Dasha to Kai and then back again.
“I see….” Dasha answered setting a finger to her lips, her brows knitting more. She was... still trying very hard not to laugh at this damn kid who thought his name meant anything but she'd run into this personality plenty before. She swore it.

Kai, on the other hand, had no problem openly and heavily rolling his eyes at the boy's long-winded introduction. He could sympathize with worrying about a Pokemon's health, though. He'd been there a few times. One time in particular back in Kanto he had a military buddy who got really bitter and withdrawn after coming back home, and as Kai gradually started losing touch with him he'd noticed his Houndoom becoming increasingly violent and worrying that the guy was torturing it to make a more vicious attack dog, even though he never quite got proof. He'd been very tempted to step in, but eventually the guy's girlfriend left him and took the Houndoom, and it seemed to be doing better when he saw them once a few months later.
...Although...
"Back up a minute. Do you wanna take him because you want him taken care of, or as payment on a debt." That was about as much accusation as question.
"--I!" That clearly flustered him a bit, too. "I don't see that those need to be mutually exclusive answers!" he insisted.
... Uh-huh. "How many Pokemon do you have, kid?" he asked the skull kid.
"...Just... just Orange here. We used t'ave a Drowzee pal too back when Team Skull was.. more'va Thing but I already sold 'im ta try 'n help us get back on our feet."
Kai.. probably should have been focusing on the fact that he had been responsible enough to acknowledge he couldn't care for two Pokemon and downsize but instead he just... "...You named your Mightyena Orange?"
"...Er... Yeah cuz.. 'is fur's black and--"
OH.. Kai both winced and held back a shameful laugh as he muttered, "I got it..."
Michael Winston Snickerbottom the Fourth or whatever his name was just huffed. "Please tell Tyler he shouldn't have a Pokemon he can't afford."
"I keep tellin' you my name is Big T." ... How were these kids real. How old were these children.

Dasha’s eyes flashed up at the question. Oh that was— FFFFFF. She squinted a bit at Michael but would give her attention back to the other kid right after. Her heart sank just a little at hearing that this was his only Pokemon, and it didn’t help that Snowflake decided to take that moment to lean against her legs a little more. Oh wait- she wanted something?
As Kai talked to the kid some more, Dasha shifted her bag off her shoulder and let Snowflake take out a small bag of— oh. Ok, sure. The Absol was quick to snatch up the bag of Pokefood she had with her and wandered over to the Mightyena kind of ebbing him back away from the kids before setting the food down in front of him. The Mightyena grimaced and whined a little but the Absol was quick to assure him there were no strings attached. Just eat. And he did so, and she’d keep him company for now.
Dasha, meanwhile, was frowning a bit harder. “I’m not calling you Big T,” she stated flatly. The skull kid grimaced and huffed. Michael preened only to receive a stern look back. There was a pause before a thought occurred to Dasha. “How do you two even know each other?”
The boys exchanged a glance before Michael huffed. “He an acquaintance from school,” came the answer. “His mother couldn’t even afford to keep him in school.”
“I— DON’T talk about mah MOM,” Tyler hissed suddenly tightening his hands into fists. “I’ll make you black ‘n—“ Dasha had moved before she even realized it, her hand clasped around the kid’s wrist. He might have thought himself strong, but she was stronger.
“He’s just as violent as his dad was too!” Michael huffed loudly.
“Don’t TALK about MAH DAD!” Tyler was yelling and pulling, but Dasha wasn’t about to let go either.

Ahhh, Kai was glad Dasha had some food with her. (Maybe her over-packing was a good thing, after all.) He did have a few treats in his pocket, he remembered now, and unzipped it to pull out the broken pieces of two bone-shaped biscuits. It seemed they'd been a bit smooshed by some of their heavier activities the past few days, but they were edible enough, and he'd quietly add them to the pile. What a poor good boy.
As the boys had their little spat and Dasha kept Tyler at bay, Kai leered at Michael. "Let's not judge people by their parents' actions, hm? It's not like my 12-year-old could kick your ass just because his dad did over a decade of military service." Both boys seemed to get a little more tense as their gazes shifted a bit toward Kai. Yeah, he did that on purpose. "So it doesn't make any sense to assume Big T here is exactly like his parents, either." He could probably make some assumptions about Michael's parents by his own attitude, but that would detract from his request here, so he wouldn't.
Watching the Mightyena gratefully inhale the food to a point of almost choking, Kai really did feel bad for him, though. "So Mikey--"
"It's Michael--"
"-- what if I took Orange?"
""What!?"" came the unified confusion, followed by several sputtered protests that Kai cut off.
"If your concern is him being taken care of, I've got at least a dozen happy healthy dogs and raised loads more over the years. You know the Kaimana Ranch on Route 10?"
Tyler's face twisted, the name clearly meaning nothing to him. But Michael was a bit more hesitant. "..Father bought me a Stoutland there last year," he admitted.
"The old man's my uncle. So I'm probably more qualified to care for him. Or, hell, I could take him to the ranch. He'd definitely have a good home there, and I bet they'd let Big T come visit."
Tyler seemed to actually debate that for a moment, but Michael protested, "But that--! And I--!"
"But you want him to pay a debt," Kai finished for him. Michael's face grew redder and he looked away, unable to find ground to stand on.

Tyler seemed to stop squirming as Kai spoke, and Dasha shifted her grasp a little to clasp his shoulder instead of his wrist. She could still stop him if he went barreling forward, but from the looks of things, he wasn’t going to. As Kai spoke, even Dasha blinked surprised by the request. He wouldn’t— this was a kid’s pet and… The mention of the farm, however, had her calming again. Looking to Tyler and finding him considering it, she then looked back to the Mightyena who had almost finished the bag by then. She…wished she had more with her but unfortunately didn’t. At least if he had regular meals, he wouldn’t have to scarf like this.
As the kid sputtered and Kai finished his statement, however, Dasha looked back. “What do you owe him?” she asked Tyler specifically. The boy fidgeted shaking his head. Dasha’s hand tightened on his shoulder, and he sighed lowering his gaze. “About two hundred mun…” he admitted quietly.
“Two sixty,” Michael interjected suddenly.
“I know,” Tyler snapped back.
Dasha frowned. That was a good bit of mun for kids, heh. She could remember pinching mun when she was technically an occupational trainer. “Can’t you just work it off by helping him in some way?” she suggested.
Tyler grimaced and huffed. “Not like ‘e’d want me to…” he muttered.
