Val's mind had been elsewhere as they wandered the ruins, thoughts racing as they contemplated their current research project, trying to come up with ways to prove one of the various hypotheses they had in mind...
And now, Val had to admit, they were well and truly lost.
Val thought that they knew the underground ruins of Carrefor like the back of their hand, but the area in front of them didn't ring any bells for them, didn't look familiar in the slightest.
Val considered turning around and trying to retrace their steps, but decided against it in the end. If this area was new to them, perhaps it would have equally new and exciting treasures to unearth within it. Besides, there was a certain joy to be found in exploring new areas just for exploration's sake, to making sure that the next time they came across this area they would know how they had gotten there.
Val took a few careful steps forward, moving their flashlight to and fro, until they stumbled across a most interesting item.

(Claiming Big Pearl)
Their flashlight had revealed a glint of light in the distance; as Val approached the item in question, they saw that it was a pearl, large and flawless, the dim light of the flashlight shimmering beautifully across its surface.
Val looked around, but could see no clear source of the pearl, no place where it might have been lodged before. It wasn't the slightest bit dusty or broken, unlike most of the objects surrounding it. It looked as though it might have fallen out of someone's pocket just a moment earlier, and yet Val knew enough to guess that the pearl had probably been here--dozens of years? Hundreds? Thousands? That much they didn't quite know.
But wherever it had come from, whoever had left it behind so many years ago, it seemed highly unlikely that they would go looking for it, that anyone would notice its absence. And it almost felt like it had been placed there just for Val's sake, laying out in the open just so that they could scoop it up, though Val knew better.
Val grabbed the pearl and placed it gently in their bag, trying not to get too caught up in wondering about its origin while they looked for other treasures in this unexplored section of the ruins.

(Claiming Winter Gem)
The gem--which Val had almost walked by without giving it a second glance, as small and nearly translucent as it was--sparkled in the dim light of the flashlight, catching Val's eye just in time. It, too, was all alone in the ruins, with no sign of where it had originated, no other gems or artifacts to provide context to its discovery.
The gem was somewhat dusty, and while Val had recognized it as potentially valuable by sight alone, only after picking up the gem (which was noticeably cool to the touch) and blowing away the dust did Val realize exactly what they had stumbled upon.
A Winter Gem, eh? Those were said to be good for clearing one's mind, if Val remembered correctly. Well, they could certainly use that, as their mind kept racing, thoughts of research crowding out thoughts of their immediate surroundings.
Val dumped the gem into their bag and hoped that its properties would give them a better shot at finding yet more treasures in their current search of the ruins.

(Claiming Armor Fossil)
As Val continued searching the ruins, on the lookout for their next treasure, they tripped.
Val quietly let out a string of curses as they got up, noting how dirt now coated their outfit. A glance downward revealed that what they had tripped over was a hole in the ground... one notably similar in size to their Nincada.
Before Val could call for their Nincada, however, the Pokemon emerged on his own from another hole, clinging to something that almost blended in with the ground. Val walked over to the Nincada's side and found that what it was clutching was a fossil, one with a rounded shape.
"Can I have that?"
The Nincada hesitated, looking Val in the eye. "Nin..."
"...can I have that, please?"
"Nin nin." The Nincada dutifully dropped the fossil, and Val picked it up. Looking closely, the fossil was in practically pristine shape--had their Nincada retrieved this straight from the ground? That was a talent, to be sure, and one worth the ache remaining from their fall.
"Thank you." Val reached out and gently brushed the Nincada's back. "I appreciate it. Really."
"Cada!"
The Nincada ran off happily and... burrowed into the ground, creating yet another hole.
Val sighed a little, but couldn't help but smile at the same time.

(Claiming Big Nugget)
This time, Val didn't trip before their Nincada popped up again. It wasn't hard to avoid where the Pokemon was tunneling; upon close inspection, the earth was raised where the Nincada was burrowing, which became even more pronounced partway through the Pokemon's journey.
Val half-expected for their Nincada to bring something else up with them, whether a fossil like before or some useless "treasure" like a large stick or unexceptional rock.
Val didn't expect their Nincada to bring a round gold nugget nearly as big as the Bug-type itself was, and yet that was what they saw when the Nincada finally emerged from underground. The Nincada dropped the nugget immediately upon surfacing and lay down, clearly tired from the strain.
Val hadn't really thought about it, but it made sense in a way that there would be such things underground, that the surface of the ruins was only the tip of the iceberg when it came to valuable items... but for their Nincada to recognize such a valuable item and put in the effort to bring it up for his owner? That was exceptional. That was truly praise-worthy.
Val walked over to the Nincada and gently petted the Bug-type after grabbing the gold nugget. "Thanks a lot, Nincada."
"Ca... da..."
"It must have been hard work, but it was worth it--this can sell for a lot, I'm sure. I really do appreciate it."
"Cada-ca."
Val hesitated for a moment, then picked up the Bug-type, letting the Nincada climb up their arms and onto their shoulders.
"Let's head home now, shall we?"
"Nin!"
