Val wasn't in the Berry Grove for fun and games. Val was there on a mission. A mission... to get berries.
It sounded a bit silly when it was put that way, they had to admit. But getting berries could help them attract Pokemon--and more importantly, it could help attract the right Pokemon, ones that could help with their current research project rather than random Pokemon that wouldn't be of any help at all.
Besides, Val had to admit that there were worse places to be than the Berry Grove, even if a large part of them would rather be at home in Carrefor instead.
Val kept a lookout for berries, searching far and wide to find them.

Val's eyes landed on a tree with golden berries hanging from its very top branches. Val knew they would never be able to reach the berries on their own, and even climbing on top of one of their Pokemon seemed unlikely to succeed. (Not for the first time, they cursed their shortness.) But maybe if they got out a flying Pokemon and convinced them to--
Val's Type: Null, seeing where their owner was looking, headbutted the tree in question, sending a shower of berries falling to the ground around them.
Val smiled a little as they picked up a golden berry and a few more common berries from what had fallen to the ground. It wasn't the solution they had had in mind, but Val had to admit it was a good solution nonetheless.
"Nice work, Type: Null."
"Null Null!"

Val stood in the Berry Grove, contemplating their next move, when they felt a tug on their jeans. Glancing down revealed that their Riolu was standing by their side, trying to get their attention with one hand while holding something in the other. As Val knelt down to look their Riolu in the face, the Riolu opened his hand to reveal a fistful of berries.
"Ri-ri?"
"For me?" Val asked, extending one hand towards the Riolu.
Their Riolu nodded excitedly and dumped the berries into Val's outstretched hand. "Olu-ri!"
Val smiled a little as they put the berries in their bag. They could probably have picked up a similar amount of berries by hand, but in this case at least, it was the thought that counted, not the result. "Thank you, Riolu."
"Rio-ri!" came the enthusiastic response.

Val saw a red berry on the ground and ducked down to pick it up--
--and knocked heads with their Riolu in the process.
Val grimaced and sat down, not caring that the dirt would probably ruin their jeans, as they tried to will the resulting headache into receding, without much success. Their Riolu picked up the berry and turned towards them, holding the berry gently.
Val looked back at their Riolu, unsure what to say, what the Pokemon expected of them.
The Riolu pushed their extended arm, and the berry held within it, towards Val's mouth.
"No--" The berry almost fell into their mouth as they opened it. "I don't--" Val grabbed the berry and stuffed it into their bag before the Riolu could play with it further. "--want a berry."
Val's Riolu looked a little sad as Val put away the berry he had retrieved. "...olu?"
Val looked at the Riolu, their headache starting to fade, and the ends of their mouth twitched upwards. It was, admittedly, a bit of a comical scene, now that it was over. And Val knew their Riolu only meant the best, was just trying to help in his own way, flawed though it was.
"Thanks, though."
The Riolu cheered up in an instant. "Ririo!"

Val felt berries bombard them and looked over to see their Type: Null standing next to a berry tree, their tail wagging enthusiastically. It didn't take a genius to put together the pieces; clearly their Type: Null, having noticed that headbutting the tree got a positive reaction once before, had done it again, hoping to once again receive praise from their Trainer.
Val hesitated, unsure whether to praise the Pokemon. On the one hand, their actions had freed a number of berries from the tree, and Val could see that a few had landed in their open bag (while others had managed to stain their jeans); on the other hand, it probably wasn't good for the tree, and if their Type: Null's headbutting caused any permanent damage to the trees of the Berry Grove, Val wouldn't be fond of the resulting consequences.
Val settled for calling their Type: Null over to their side and praising the Pokemon for coming so quickly instead. That way the Pokemon still got praise and Val didn't have to worry about encouraging any bad habits; it was a win-win.
And come to think of it, it was probably time to get the attention of all their Pokemon and head home, anyway. It had been a long day, and between the dirt and the berry juice, their jeans might never fully recover from it. They had taken their fill, but now it was time to leave.
