Sera is a very upbeat person as a general rule. A "ray of human sunshine", if you will. And like sunshine, she can brighten your day, dazzle you, be a little painful to be around for too long, and burn you just by existing~

Not just 'despite' but because of her inherent empathic abilities, she can be a little oblivious to the people around her at times, having learned to tune things out to keep herself from getting overwhelmed by the constant external input that comes with actually paying attention. She's very rarely purposefully mean or anything, but can come off as pretty abrasive if she's not careful, whether by seeming dismissive or arrogant or what-have-you. She can also just come off as very ditzy, spacey, or otherwise off in her own world, and her memory can be somewhat poor. (Rarely is this worse than when someone thinks she just "didn't care enough" to remember something important, when, no, she really just forgets easily.)

When she both bothers to focus and can actually manage to do so well, though, she really is a very sweet girl, or tries her best to be, although she finds it easier to get along with Pokemon than people longterm. She is very bright, with some notable skill in strategies and a lot of book knowledge.. that.. she doesn't always remember well enough to put into effect when under pressure. For instance, she can easily recite every Pokemon type match-up, but when actually in the midst of battle, slip-ups happen more than she'd care to admit (generally resulting in adamantly pretending that didn't happen or quietly beating herself up because she knew that, dammit).

She craves praise and attention, and enjoys giving the same to others as well. She can also be maybe a little pushy and overzealous about both. And she tends to be fiercely, impossibly stubborn. "Throw out logic and do the impossible", as a wise man once said. What do you mean that person doesn't want to be friends? That Pokemon is 'too hard' to find? That dream is too big to achieve? Nahhh. You've just gotta stay positive and keep trying~

Sera's father is a prominent researcher who aids in the study and development of Alto's various energy sources. He wasn't the head of any particular team, but was an important part of several different ones, and had.. not sole patents, but at least royalties for a few different modern designs. This left the family moderately wealthy-- not necessarily "rich", per se, but quite well-off. And regardless of the actual nuances of their finances, her father was Pretty Important within the city, and always took strongly to acting the part. He consistently tried to put out the image of being even better-off than they really were and did his best to maintain as many connections among the social elite as possible, such that when new jobs or opportunities for advancement arose, he'd always be fresh in their minds.

As such, Sera grew up not just well taken care of, but with the expectation to live up to her father's reputation, both in terms of her personal merits and in knowing how to behave in high society circles. She learned quickly how to keep a pleasant smile through any situation and hide anything that might be perceived as reflecting badly on either her or her family. What she did not learn, however, was how to open up to or connect properly with other people. Her life was a stage, every public appearance a show with a house full of critics.

The only time she felt like she could really relax and have fun was when she was at home, at least once her studies were done. This resulted in a lot of escapism into fantasy through both reading and gaming, and in making friends primarily with her family's various Pokemon. Which, of course, was normal enough, especially for a child. Pokemon are valuable friends and partners. ... Talking to them this much is.. maybe a little excessive, but still pretty nor--... why are you carrying on conversations with them? You're too old for that, stop.

Sera didn't get it, though? It took until some time in the past year or two to realize her ability was a form of telepathy, and that it wasn't unique. Prior to that, though, she spent a lot of her life wondering why no one else seemed to understand Pokemon as easily as she did, and her father would get irritated at her for talking about it even at home, let alone in public. She was written off as 'frivolous', 'delusional', 'a compulsive liar', or any of a slew of other various accusations of varying hostility depending on how he was feeling that day. Sera's mother... did try to be more supportive, but only when her father wasn't around to hear. So, like most things, she just learned to quietly smile when appropriate, and do what she wanted only when it was safe to do so.

Two things Sera always wanted to do that she never really got a chance to, though, were traveling to see the world and training Pokemon of her own. She had pets, but she 'wasn't trustworthy enough' to be a 'real' trainer, or to be allowed out on her own, and the family rarely had time for much travel. When they did go somewhere, it was usually squeezing in a 'vacation' while her father was on business, and their range was always quite limited; she never got a chance to just explore for more than a few stolen hours at best.

But of course, this past summer? Guess who became A Legal Adult, and as such can no longer be strictly controlled? Her father is not happy about this at all, and made it clear that if she goes and makes an ass of herself she shouldn't expect any more support from him, but... 8') Oh well bye dad.

At least her mom probably won't entirely disown her, having made sure she at least had some spending money and a Pokemon to help take care of her-- Sera's formerly-pet Skitty-- when she left home. So, of course, the first thing Sera did was blow a huge chunk of that money on a very fancy second Pokemon, in the form of her pretty white Salandit. But, hey. If she wanted to make it as a coordinator, it would pay off to stand out, right?

It is... a distinct possibility she may be overcompensating for her newfound freedom and going through something of a Rebellious Stage, but sssshhh. She'll figure it out as she goes, probably.

Empathy [Major (2)] - can receive seemingly random "impressions" of another's emotions (both human and Pokémon). She is currently pretty bad about absorbing other's emotions, as well, but doesn't always process them well, meaning they don't always result in a direct mirror so much as just ends up with a jumbled mess, especially if negative. She generally suppresses her own negative emotions, so getting them from other people is??? what do with??? She likes to think she's pretty decent at calming others down and spreading smiles, though whether that's aided by her empathic ability or just a honed social skill at this point is a little unclear. She hopes to get better at that in time, however.

Telepathy [Minor (1), Pokémon-centric] - can communicate clearly with owned or well-known Pokemon in the immediate vincinity, but not so much with humans. She may rarely get a faint flicker of something from a human, but she's not even really sure if that's glitchy telepathy or a good guess affected by empathy? She has a slightly better ability to understand unfamiliar Pokémon than most low-level telepaths, however; they are not nearly as clear as familiar ones, but she can generally pick up at least the vague general direction of what they might mean so long as they are at all attempting to be communicative. Openly hostile or panicked Pokemon are harder to understand even when familiar, though, and generally impossible when unfamiliar.

Agility (Minor) (1) - Light on her feet, Sera has the skill and grace of a dancer and puts it to use on the contest stage. She is very flexible, a bit quicker to react to physical situations than the average person, and can do a handful of fancy maneuvers like cartwheels and mid-air spins without only occasional minor difficulty.

Mai only made half an effort to stifle her barked laugh at that jab. She had no delusions that she wasn’t downright awful back then, and while she might have been embarrassed to be reminded of that in some circumstances, here and now between just them, she was pretty sure they were well past that. It was far enough away they could look back and laugh– or at least she could, and if that hadn’t been how he meant it, it should have been, she told herself.

As he gathered his clothes, she took a minute to stretch, and then– where the hell had her phone gone? She didn’t know whether to be more frustrated or amused that it managed to hide itself so well in relatively little blanket. She had finally located it and started to unbutton his shirt when he came over to kiss her though. “Don’t rush me,” she mock-complained, but then gave him a kiss on the cheek. “…Hm. Actually, I guess… if I’m gonna be wearing my swimsuit under, mind if I borrow this~?”

She didn’t wait for an answer before heading downstairs to get her other clothes, then to the bathroom to get her bikini and change. She decided to forego the corset once again in favor of his shirt, tied just under her boobs rather than buttoned this time; along with her skirt from earlier and… hm…

As she came out of the bathroom barefoot, she called, “Babe? What size shoe do you wear? Neither the platforms nor the sandals I wore over yesterday sound very good for riding…”

She didn’t expect anything of his to “fit” her, at least well enough to comfortable wear all day– nor did she expect his actual ‘shoe size’ to tell her jack shit, considering she was most familiar with Japanese scales and women’s sizes, and he’d not only have men’s but quite possibly shoes he’d bought in the States or while traveling abroad, but it was a figure of speech dammit. So she’d actually… need to see them, she supposed, but the point was, if he had something that would at least stay on her feet and give better coverage, then as long as they weren’t going to be doing a lot of walking somewhere she couldn’t slip them off and go barefoot, i.e. the beach, they still might be preferable to the shoes she had with her.

“Or if you don’t have some I can borrow, maybe I should head back to my hotel first… hm. I guess I could drop my car off and ride with you from there…” She was more or less talking to herself at this point but ssh. They could also just… take either’s car in general, but she really wanted to be on a bike again okay.
