Seraph | 19 (Oct 31, 1998) | Male Bi |
Ecruteak City Faraday City | Pokémon League | Ranger |
Appearance
Seraph stands 5'5" - rather short for a guy, but he's come to terms with it by looking at it as the ability to rock a 'cute teen' look for potentially decades; or perhaps more accurately, given he'd just as soon never grown up in general, he's totally fine with reading as more "boy" than "man". That said he does have a lean, strong build, and fairly toned muscles from years of leading a very active lifestyle.
He has the same striking red eyes as his father and older sister, and his shoulder-length, usually-messy hair's natural color could be argued as either a very reddish brown or a slightly dull dark red. He doesn't mind being called either a 'brunet' or a 'redhead', incidentally, though it does seem to get a little brighter and closer to red the more sun he gets. That said, he's more recently dyed much of the top of it bright green. He's not sure how long he'll keep it like this, but so far he's liking the contrast even if it does earn as much negative as positive attention, it seems.
His hips are wider than he'd generally like, and on his most insecure days are easily his least favorite physical feature, but normally he does his best to just kind of ignore it, and occasionally he still thinks his figure is pretty cute with them. It just varies with his mood. His breasts border between a B and C cup when he isn't binding. He usually does in public, unless his clothing is baggy enough not to bother or he has to be in public longer on a given day than it's safe to bind at a time, or perhaps if he's in a very specific mood not to. But when he does, he's able to achieve a look not quite flat, but easily reading as muscular pecks rather than breasts, which he's rather pleased about.
His normal taste in fashion is very bold, bright, and personal. He likes what he likes, and pays as little attention as he can to whether or not something is popular (both avoiding jumping on bandwagons for the sake of doing so but also not avoiding something he likes just to avoid going along with the crowd if the crowd seems to have a great idea). Red, white, gold, and green have become his favored colors. (Sssh, don't tell him he's a walking Christmas float. ... Or do. Christmas is a great aesthetic and he loves rocking it honestly.) He likes hoodies-- especially really loose ones (
Occasionally, when the right mood strikes, Seraph likes to wear cute or even elegant girly clothes, including dresses. He's most comfortable doing so around friends who know him and will understand he's still a guy even if his taste in fashion still includes the sorts of things he used to wear, but at his most confident and spontaneous he might just throw all regard for the opinions of strangers to the wind and just kind of ignore the fact that people will read him as a girl. Admittedly, moods this confident are still rare, and sometimes he changes his mind halfway through the day, but he's working hard to remind himself that feminine tastes or clothes never make him any less valid as a guy.
As far as accessories go, there are plenty of necklaces or wrist accessories he might wear from time to time, and his ears can hold up to nine earrings if he's feeling it (exactly "nine" left over from his days as the "Ninetails" mascot; five in his right, four in his left), though he usually only wears one or two now if any. He has a very guilty love of goggles as an accessory, though. Certainly, they prove useful far more often than one might expect when working out in the wild, but... honestly, he'll wear them for no reason when they're clearly doing nothing just because he's developed a love for the look.

Personality
Cheerful, outgoing, extroverted, and bordering on outright bubbly; Seraph wants nothing more than to bring joy to all the world. He has a passionate interest in performance arts for precisely that reason, adoring the idea of the stage as a platform through which he can share his energy and joy with everyone who sees him. He's been known to push himself well beyond what is good for his own mental health in an effort to please everyone, from his family to the legions of fans he once had as an idol. Seraph actively struggles to find a balance between his desire to please and taking care of his own needs, but he's learning, slowly but surely.
Really, he can be pretty passionate and intense in all things he does. He takes his duties as a Ranger very seriously, despite having pursued the profession primarily to please his father. He is extremely devoted to ensuring that all the skills he's learned over the years be put to good use, and helping those who can't help themselves. He works hard, plays hard, trains hard, even sleeps hard. (All right, so being a heavy sleeper probably isn't related to his passionate nature, but he'd like to think it is.)
Around people he considers "friends"-- whether he's known them for years or just gotten a good impression of them right away-- he can be a bit silly and immature. He doesn't always realize when things like his teasing or silly nicknames assigned to people are unwelcome, which can sometimes lead to poor first impressions, but he will generally apologize and try to hold back in the future if someone calls his attention to it. His effort is rarely ever to hurt, after all; he wants to make people smile.
That said, if someone hurts his friends, his family, or his Pokemon, his intention may very well become hurting them back. Even accidents are not always forgiven easily. Trip over his Pokemon and he won't beat you up or anything, but he'll definitely snap to watch where you're going and fume about it for at least five minutes, maybe more depending on the Pokemon. Intentionally hurt someone he cares about, and he will make it his mission to see you suffer. True grudges are hard to form, but if he stays upset about something for more than a few days, expect it to stick for years to life.
When stressed, he can be pretty hard on others, even friends and especially people he doesn't care for, as well as incredibly hard on himself. At times, he will become sullen and withdrawn, leaving behind his outgoing self to ruminate on everything he might have done differently and every past failure and mistake. These times are fortunately rarer than not, however, and he does his best to push through and immerse himself in some sort of project or social event when he feels such a mood starting to come on.
History
[Disclaimer: Bolded lines kept from Seraphine's original app, as the character had been adopted from Tagger but only played for two posts before the player disappeared. Horizontal rule indicates where adapted history ends and added history begins, though there's a bit tweaked/spun differently before that.]
Born in Shalour City, Kalos, Seraphine was technically the youngest child of Samantha and Daniel Benoit, albeit only younger than her twin brother Thomas by a trivial amount. Many pairs of twins grow up as rivals, but these two as they grew resembled the cliché image of a knight in shining armor and a damsel in distress. In their case, however, Thomas was the damsel and Sera the knight.
Their father had always wanted a child to follow in his footsteps as a Pokemon Ranger, but their older sister Andrea had resisted, becoming a coordinator with their mother's help instead. As her path became clear, this meant all Daniel's efforts went into training Thomas and Sera.
He often pushed them rather hard, but Sera never particularly minded, and Thomas always did his best to help make sure Sera was having fun with them. Between his efforts and her natural knack for most of their 'training', it would take her far too many years to realize that Thomas wasn't just lagging behind her a little like a silly Slowpoke, but legitimately struggling and suffering from both the stress of training and his guilt over his shortcomings. She enjoyed climbing on trees and fighting her way through rougher terrain in order to solve whichever fictional crisis her dad had come up with for his kids to solve, but Thomas... Between dad and the bullies at school, Sera eventually grew rather worried for Thomas.
However, as much as she liked Ranger work, Sera's real passion-- or at least strongest interest-- was always performing. She idolized her mother and sister, and had Tommy been even almost as good as her at athletic skills and outdoorsy things, she'd have just as soon left those to be her hobby while pursuing the life of a Coordinator instead. However, she knew how disappointed dad would be if none of his children became Rangers, as well as how much harder he'd be on Thomas if she left her brother to be his last hope. She couldn't do that to either, and remained silent about her own desires. Despite this, she rarely felt any real resentment toward their father, and never toward Thomas.
On the twins' 10th birthday, as was common enough in Kalos and particularly Benoit tradition, Thomas and Sera set out on a Pokemon journey: him with a Poochyena he'd been gifted by a kind stranger a few years before, and Sera with a Vulpix she'd adopted in recent months in anticipation of this day. They saw and experienced many things, overcame many minor challenges, and really did very well for a pair of ten-year-olds with little to no parental supervision. However, Thomas couldn't quite bring himself to challenge Gyms or take on any Big Challenges the way Sera could, and no matter how much she tried to defend him and talk up his accomplishments to the family, the fact that her achievements shone more than his and that Daniel remained disappointed in Thomas was all too apparent.
After almost a year of this, Sera's worst fear was realized as she woke up one morning to find Thomas gone, only a short note to say he was okay and not to look for him. Look she did, tirelessly for weeks, and then with less fervor but continued hope for months. But she never found him. She never exactly 'stopped' looking, but it became a background activity rather than a driving force. It was a little too clear he didn't want to be found.
The event changed Sera a lot. No longer was the world quite so sunshine and rainbows. No matter how hard she worked, how great her hope, how wealthy her family, she couldn't bring Thomas home, and knowing that level of helplessness and despair for the first time crushed her. Moreover, she was Thomas's Twin. They had been inseparable since birth; what was she supposed to be now? For quite some time, she became despondent and withdrawn herself.
However, by the time her 12th birthday rolled around, she'd realized that even if Thomas was gone, she still had family depending on her-- and now she had to fill both her own and Thomas's shoes, didn't she? Right! As such, she entirely abandoned her dream of Coordinating, at least for the time being, resolving to work even harder in order to become a great Ranger capable of protecting others from the pain she felt.
A few months before turning 16, Sera succeeded in that goal! Or at least in the becoming an official Ranger part. ...However, without that tunnel vision she'd kept moving toward this for the past few years, she found herself.... a little lost. Dad was beaming with pride every time she came home wearing that uniform, and she knew she should be happy. She enjoyed the work? She was glad to give him what he wanted. But there was still something... empty about it all. Maybe empty wasn't the best word, but Sera was... dissatisfied.
As it became harder to fake a smile every day, she soon insisted on moving to Johto for a while, claiming she wanted to experience some new landscapes and culture and maybe learn to be more independent while she was at it. The family was a little reluctant, but ultimately supportive, and she made sure to write letters often. She just.. never mentioned in those letters how little the move helped, or how much she wondered if she made the right choice with this career. Of course, every time she sat down and asked herself what was wrong with it, she couldn't come up with anything. She objectively loved it? It just... wasn't coordinating. It wasn't performing. But was that so bad? Was that even the reason everything felt so... off? She had no idea.
Making new friends among the local Rangers did help. She'd always been a pretty amiable person, but she lucked into a pretty nice group, and easily fell into the role of being "one of the guys". Not that she didn't enjoy hanging out with the other female rangers, too. (Or briefly date a few on both sides, if only very casually so as to avoid too much complication with work. Admittedly, she usually felt a bit weird about it anyway, so just as well, but it was usually still fun overall while it lasted.) She supposed she'd just become more of a "tomboy" than a "girly" girl anymore, no matter how much she still adored the idea of fancy and elegant things in a stage setting.
Speaking of fancy and elegant things, however, Seraphine would eventually be approached by the Ninetails Company-- a famous fashion company-- about becoming a face for their brand. Was this it!? The opportunity of a lifetime? Her chance to be in the spotlight and the public eye without sacrificing her Ranger job and her dad's approval. She didn't even care that the business had chosen her mainly because they wanted to make use of the influential Benoit name; this was far too great an offer to refuse.
Even if the company intentionally misspelled "Ninetales", that had even always been one of her favorite species! Admittedly her dear starter Kasai was still a Vulpix by choice, and because they'd often found her small size convenient in the field. The whole line was wonderful, and Sera wanted to take it as a sign that this was meant to be. She'd do anything to bring a sense of fulfillment to her life.
Anything. Like, becoming a blonde in public. And wearing silly (if cute) ears and tails to more promote herself as the company mascot. And wearing slitted contacts on a regular basis, hiding the bold natural eye color she was so proud of, Dad's color, Andie's color...
Even if it meant outfits that didn't really suit her tastes, and weren't comfortable to wear on a daily basis. Even if it meant a complete lack of social life outside the Ranger Union, because when she wasn't at work she was at work, immediately donning her idol persona. Even if it meant plenty of critics alongside the fans. Even if she couldn't speak out when she agreed with the criticism because she was under contract. Even if she wasn't allowed to interact 'too' much with her fans because portraying the image of an unattainable goddess who sometimes saw fit to grace her worshippers with her presence made for a better sales pitch than a friendly person who just wanted to make everyone smile. Even if it meant long hours, too many photoshoots, increasingly offputting and embarrassing demands...
Even if it meant being pressured to evolve her Vulpix to "better fit the image", even though neither Seraphine nor Kasai wanted that. But if it meant staying in the spotlight...
Sera... would grow to regret her time working for the Ninetails Company.
In time, she'd receive a letter that Thomas had made contact again with the family (who had now moved to a region called Veria). She packed her bags without thinking and headed there immediately.
Instead of Thomas, she'd first run into Andie. Their meeting was brief, unsatisfying, and... far more nerve-wracking than expected. She'd come in her Idol attire, blonde hair and golden eyes and all, and... Sera quickly made an excuse to leave, promising she'd be back by soon.
She was not back soon.
Seraphine was breaking and couldn't quite pin down why; she was just as certain as she'd ever been of anything that she couldn't face Thomas like this. She'd just... she had to change clothes. ... Well, maybe actually wait until she was in a little better place mentally after panicking like that? ... You know, Johto sounded really inviting maybe she could just run home and hide.
She quit her job with Ninetails Co, but when she wasn't at work or maybe forcing herself to hang out with co-workers, she was mostly withdrawing. She stopped writing home. She didn't know what to tell anyone. How was she supposed to explain why she didn't want to see Thomas-- or rather, didn't want him to see her, even after ditching the fake foxy persona? It didn't make sense, and the frustrating feelings from not being able to figure out why it didn't only made it worse in a spiraling pattern.
Then, one day, a new Ranger starter work at the local HQ. She was, apparently, a trans girl. Sera didn't want to be rude, but she'd never met anyone quite like her and didn't really... 'get' it? The woman, if occasionally snappy on certain subjects, was mostly patient with her constant questions, and in retrospect Seraph is pretty sure she must have been some form of heavenly saint, but that's getting a bit ahead.
Amid other topics that came up was how Sera didn't understand how doing xyz things 'made' this woman 'a girl'. The short answer was that they didn't, but she happened to do them while being a girl. That didn't really clarify anything at all though? Adding to Sera's confusion was how many traditionally masculine interests and hobbies and behaviors she had herself. Upon having it pointed out that being a tomboy was a common enough occurrence, Sera only grew more frustrated, emphatically trying to explain to what depths many of these things ran, that it went so far beyond the average 'tomboy', but still didn't make her a man, so???
At this point tired and bitter herself, the woman had sort of snapped, "You certainly argue like a man. Are you sure?" The tone was clearly meant as a jab, an off-hand insult, but something about it stuck with her anyway. Of... course she was sure... wasn't she? She'd never really... met any trans folks other than the one she was talking to now, but she was at least aware they existed. Wasn't that, like, something one was supposed to know from a young age? What a stupid question.
Except she kept coming back to it over the next few weeks, and every time her mental retorts got a little weaker. On one hand, it seemed so bizarre and surreal to even consider? Surely she'd have had even that idea cross her mind before now. Yet, on the other hand, when she tried to picture-- for humor's sake, she told herself-- what things might be like if she "were" a guy, it.... wasn't as difficult to picture as she felt it should have been?
Eventually, Seraphine would apologize to their coworker and start asking different questions, like... had she ever questioned who or what she was, and what might someone do if one was questioning?
It felt terrifying to admit there was even a chance of it being more than a passing question, and the thought of trying to usher in this whole new person-- yet another new identity to figure out-- left them horribly anxious. But their new friend assured them that it didn't have to be like that. Labels weren't contracts you had to sign up for, and you didn't have to take the whole bundle package or nothing at all. You could try them on like clothing, find what fit you, and discard it again if something didn't. Seraphine, could, for lack of a better explanation, "try out" "being"-- or rather, presenting as and/or trying to think more of themself as-- a guy, and if that felt weird or wrong then they'd know. They could try nonbinary labels if they felt that would be easier to adjust to. There were plenty of options.
Seraphine nervously explained the situation to a few close friends, who agreed to start calling him "he/him" as best as they could remember for at least the next few weeks or unless Sera asked them to stop. It was... weird, and he wasn't sure if it was just because he wasn't used to it or not? But it wasn't terrible. So he gave that some time.
His attire didn't really require much change, though he started making a point to avoid his dresses and skirts for a while. In what was perhaps a more drastic decision, Seraphine cut his previously chest-length hair to well above shoulder-length. He almost cried when he saw the first long lock of hair fall to the floor, but continued, reasoning that at worst it would grow back, and it would be cool (in a temperature sense) and easy to take care of for a while. As much as he'd always been attached to the aesthetic of his long hair, though, this... fellt... immediately far better than anticipated? Image-wise was a little more up in the air, though he did like it; but the feeling of just having it off his neck and shoulders was glorious. Even if he decided this whole thing had been a silly phase, he felt like he might keep his (her?) hair short for quite a while.
The pronouns were starting to feel more natural, but was that just because he was getting used to them? At best, he was starting to feel like maybe he 'could' be a guy, but did that mean he was? Eh... Of course, most of his time was still devoted to work or spent home alone, so that wasn't really helping speed up the 'discovery' or whatever process. But he guessed he'd been overwhelmed by the idea of rushing anyway, so that was fine.
It would be about two months before he'd eventually try binding. After some finagling, he, as with his hair, found himself surprised by how much he liked the look. He could almost 'pass' for a 'real' guy like this, too? But... eh. He told himself he probably didn't need to go to the trouble, but continued binding on occasion for a while anyway.
Then one fateful day, it happened.
Seraphine was out shopping, dressed in casual vaguely-masculine attire, binding that day just sort of because he felt like he should keep trying to. His hair was a mess and he was a bit groggy, not really watching where he was going. He bumped into someone, and the simplest yet most impactful words left their mouth: "Oh. Excuse me, sir."
Something in him clicked. Getting friends to treat him like a guy had been one thing. He was getting used to it, but on some level it always just felt like... testing the waters but without any option to actually dive in, or something. But the moment a stranger with no knowledge of him or his situation read him as masculine-- as male-- it felt... so much more real?
He started getting out more, being more mindful than ever of his presentation, learning some masculine makeup techniques, and so-on. The more he was able "pass" with random people, the more he cared about continuing to do so. Maybe... it was just validating for the effort, but...? He really, really started to like how it made him feel. And, for the most part, how he'd started to feel about himself?
There were just a few hangups he still had. One being that every time conversation got as far as asking for his name, "Sera" and "Seraphine" both earned "oh! Sorry, I thought you were a guy." A few times he replied "I am", and some of those times even went over fine. Other times, he'd quietly accept the shift in perception. He realized he needed to find something less feminine to avoid that problem, but... He loved his name? He always had. He never really had any desire to change it when he started all this, but if it was causing a--.............. Seraph. He'd start going by Seraph. That seemed to read masculine or at least neutral enough that it got some piqued interest at times, but entirely stopped the assumptions that arose with every introduction. And he liked it just as much as any other variation, to be honest-- if not even slightly moreso, for being the actual name of the angelic creature he was named for versus a human name based on it, ehehehehe.
The other big one was.... as much as he felt better about himself when people saw him as a guy, the number of things he enjoyed that he'd given up to convey that image bothered him. And the fact that it bothered him also bothered him. If he still got in moods to wear his old dresses, was he really a guy? Was he only sometimes one?
He'd eventually talk to his coworker (who he'd taken to referring to as his Ranger Mom) about it, and she'd direct him to some resources on genderfluidity and nonbinary identities, but he didn't think any of that sounded like him, really? Bigender was a solid "maybe?", but... So eventually, she'd point out, it wasn't about what you do; it's about how you feel. Did Seraph feel like a girl who happened to enjoy some boyish things, a boy who happened to enjoy some girlish things, or some mixture of both?
Put that way...? He'd never thought twice about most of his masculine interests back when he was assuming he was a girl, so she made an excellent point: why think too much of the feminine ones now? He'd take some time to give it some thought rather than answering right away, but his thoughts never swayed too far from his initial feeling. He definitely felt most comfortable thinking of himself as a boy who happened to like dresses and cute things and the like. There was no "right" or "wrong" way to be a boy, right?
Well over six months after first deciding to 'try out' and eventually to keep his new label-- his new identity-- Seraph was feeling a lot better about life, and not just for having realized he was a boy. This whole experience had taught him to be much more aware of himself, his feelings, and how he interacted with the world around him. It taught him to be more open to new ideas and to listen more to the experiences of others because one may very well learn something about oneself. But it also taught him to be more proactive about seeking solutions and improving situations he wasn't happy with.
He liked being a Ranger. He loved his Ranger family. But he missed his blood family, too, and he still, upon reflection, really did like the idea of trying to be a coordinator. To enjoy the spotlight and build a name for himself on his own terms, this time.
One of many upside of the way things played out, he supposed, was that few if any old fans should recognize the red-headed boy getting ready to embark on a new adventure as the fluffy blonde girl from all the old Ninetails merch, right?
................... Arceus almighty.
Was his family going to recognize him, though? ... Would Thomas? ...Would... he even recognize his older brother, as long as it had been? Would either know the other on sight, or would they need to be introduced to stand a chance?
It had been... so, so long...
But, he supposed, stalling wasn't going to change anything. There was a Festival coming up in Veria from what he'd read, and one didn't need to be An Official Coordinator to enter. He wouldn't rush off without thinking this time, but if he hurried well enough, maybe... he could test out his prowess for coordinating and try to reconnect with his family, soon. .................... He really... really hope that went well... He just uh...
Just had to work up his nerve.
He wound up leaving poor Kasai with his friends back "home", partially as a gift to remember him by in case it was a while before he made it back to visit, and partially because the species and circumstances of her evolution still carried some negative feelings for him. A few others were left due to having become staples within the Union, and knowing they'd rather stay and continue their work than come play Contests with him. So, in the end, he'd take just a few of his smaller Pokemon-- as well as a Flygon "Mom" gifted to him to look after him-- and finally once again head to Veria.
--------------------------
The Star Festival was... fun. He made a stupid mistake that ruined his chances of winning, but he had a blast and had some good feedback. He also ran into his cousin Lucien, who recognized him and who he was able to pretty seamlessly integrate with. Luci was.. also the youngest of the family and pretty detached from a lot of it in ways so he was the least intimidating by a good margin. Seraph's sister Andrea, however, who was also there?
W-well, he had to take care of this, and also that, and she looked busy, and oh look she was gone too bad Seraph didn't get a chance to talk to her or take off his stage mask anywhere near her, heh....
Afterward, he occasionally went to Faraday with the intent of contacting the family, but continuously lost his nerve. He kept up Ranger work to make a living for months, but--
What do you mean Andie's a Ranger now?? Some strings had to be pulled to help him stay under the radar and avoid winding up at the same base or on the same missions with her, but he somehow managed.
As October neared, though, he told himself he had to talk to Thomas before their birthday. He just... had to figure out how. He wanted everything to go perfect, wanted to have a solid plan for how reintroductions would go, and--
Oh fuck Thomas what are you doing here this is the least prepared he could possibly be someone please help??? He-- he?? When did he get so angry at Thomas where was all this buried this was not what he wanted.

Skills (3/11)
Athletic (Minor, 1) - Seraph has a good blend of strength, speed, and endurance. He spends a lot of time outdoors and roughing it in the wild, starting in early childhood and only getting more active after becoming a Ranger. When it comes to physical abilities, he's sort of a 'jack of all trades, master of none' (or, well, master of one).
Agility (Major, 2) - In addition to his more general athleticism, one skill he's taken a special degree of pride in is his agility. He can and absolutely does do parkour, often for no better reason than that it's an option. That said, things like scaling trees, cliffs, or buildings-- where he needs his arms to pull him up rather than being to run and jump alone-- slow him down to a point it's no longer really 'parkour' until he's back on his feet. Jumping from one foothold to the next to scale something, however, is a solid skill, and he can do a lot of fancy jumps and flips and such. (There is absolutely some childhood gymnastics training contributing to this skill.)
Other Information
Audino-phobic - He's gotten a little better about it in the past few years, to a point he can force himself to be around a calm Audino if he has to for work or something, but the species makes him extremely nervous due to attacks by his mother's Audino as a kid, and if he doesn't have compelling reason to hang around or an Audino seems at all aggressive he's usually gone. On rare occasions, he still has nightmares about them.
