Appearance
Standing six foot-two inches and weighing in at just over two hundred pounds, Orion is not easy to miss even in a crowd. His body is built like a slim-ish tank with well-defined musculature and force. He works out for hours at a time and has spent years building up his body to such a condition.
Orion’s finer features are smooth and rounded. He’s big but soft. Unlike his mother’s, his forest green hair is thick more akin in texture to his father’s. It falls in waves down his scalp and falls just below his shoulders. He has been known, however, to tie it back in a multitude of different hair ties and scrunches when he is working, however. His eyes are a spring green looking more gold or green depending on the lighting. Often, he will be wearing one of several pairs of glasses that he uses to correct his rather extreme farsightedness.
If you ask him, Orion doesn’t like his appearance much. It’s littered with scars and markings that he remembers mostly as personal faults and failures. Certain injures have only questionably healed, and he hates absolutely all of them, forever (except when he remembers what fights they were from; some of them were ok times).
His torso has the most noticeable scarring, with scars being either lighter or darker than his regular skin tone depending on the depth they were originally. Most notably he has one that crosses from his right pec down to his left hip. Several smaller scars cross this particular line almost forming a wayward Z pattern through it. Another particularly bad one is between his ribs on his left side, a gash more than a couple inches long that has been stitched up several times to the point even suture scars remain. His back is even more scarred with a large un-uniform X crossing down his shoulder blades to adjacent hips and smaller lines rolling over his taut muscles. Along his spine is several rows of dotted scars each an inch long and two inches apart.
Aside from his torso, his arms and legs have numerous scars. His forearms have slash marks from his wrist to his elbow that have since faded some. His right forearm has been botch-stitched up three times, and the stitching scars are actually more noticeable on first glance than anything else. He has a scar from his ring finger down the top of his hand to his thumb on that hand as well. His left has survived better though the bicep of that arm has been cut deeply once, and the scar that circles his shoulder is still there. He has a scar on the inside of his palm running up his middle finger. “Don’t try and grab blades. Just don’t.” His legs don’t have as noticeable scars, but his Achilles tendons have seen better days.
He has worked at length to keep his face from scarring. There’s no noticeable marks there now because of this, though if you squint, you might be able to see the cut that runs just along his hairline. He might have a couple smaller scars from acne growing up too.
For as many scars as he has, Orion has just as many tattoos that slightly cover them up/obscure them at first glance. From his tail bone up a quarter of his back, he has Pi written out to more than a hundred places. Upwards of that to his mid-back, he has a genetic tree that then becomes various a long chain of organic molecules at the tips of its branches rather than parts. His chest is significantly less tattooed but has a small dopamine molecule drawn in similar to the other organic molecules on his back.
His right earlobe is tattooed with a capital Sigma, though it’s sometimes hard to see. His right is tattooed with the Å angstrom symbol. He has two holes in each ear, one in the lobe and one in the cartilage in one ear and two in the lobe in the second ear. He’s had other jewelry pieces in numerous places but has taken them out over the years since they’re too easy to grab and yank a lot of the time. Some of the holes are completely closed, others are not.
Personality
On first meeting him, one will find Orion to be quiet, calm, smooth, and a little bit aloof. In most settings, he’s sociable enough and knows how to engage others in conversations, but unless you happen to be very weird, it’s hard to keep him engaged with individuals alone. He’s someone that would let a conversation lull be the death of said conversation, and his disinterest plays out pretty openly from time to time. He won’t fail to return words when they’re offered, but he’s pretty hard to engage for the awkward or severally introverted— at least until he realizes that is their nature.
He can be very interested in people depending on their nature and qualities. Active individuals will engage him more readily than passive ones, and those that naturally like to talk about themselves will garner some extra interest just from that. He likes people who think in any form or fashion and is fine with being an active or sometimes passive listener when someone goes overboard. He doesn’t tune out someone entirely (even when he may fake it when it suits him). All information tends to be sacred fuel to his frequently dying fires.
Having a strong grasp of the human condition, psyche, and general mindset, Orion can relate to others without trying, and in general, his initial perceptions of others often constitute the broad strokes of their very personhood. He understands people. He understands their drives, dreams, goals, and mindsets. He knows what to say to people in order to engage them on personal levels that may make some feel immediately close to him. He could be just about anyone’s best friend.
….Except Orion has no desire to be. Being able to understand others and engage them has left him rather raw and cynical from an early point in life. He’s seen the ugliness of people right up next to their beauty and finds the latter does not outweigh the prior. He does not have his father’s ambition towards advancement and power nor does he have his mother’s chronic obsession with learning and research. He’s just… tried and bored of it and would rather take a nap if people would let him.
He’d take a nap … if that wasn’t tiring and boring too. For as tired and bored as he is, he’s also restless as fuck and can’t seem to just relax more often than not. He’s constantly reading, running, physically training, and fighting. He likes to play puzzles and has a weakness for crossword puzzles and Sudoku. Rubix cubes barely hold his attention now, but he likes them well enough. He plays online tournaments for chess and Go among other things. He may not always win, but it’s something to do.
All that said, Orion wants a lot more than that out of life than he tends to put in. He’s particular and selfish and claims to not care when he really really does. Certain things have to be a certain way, and when they’re not, he tends to get agitated pretty easily. He knows very well it’s unreasonable to ask certain things of others but he does so anyways, often coming across as outright manipulative and pretty horrible. He knows this, he really really does, but he can’t quite bring himself to change. He even self-justifies quite a lot in order to make extra excuses for himself. He’d not dumb but chooses to disregard his own actions and their consequences.
A large part of Orion is that of a fighter— in every sense of the word. He’s someone who has to keep his mind and body active, and what better way than combat. He’s socially combatant, someone who can be very harsh and biting when necessary and someone who can rile a crowd with the right words. Physically he’s ready to take people on and take them to the ground. He’s learned to fight from fighting, and he doesn’t flinch from pain. In some ways, he very much relishes it. It’s become a filler for the dead-inside feeling he more often has, and he’d rather feel the prior over the latter. Even with the damaged state it has left his body in, he wouldn’t take back a single fight he’s put himself through.
History
Born to Oriana Verdi and Abraham Alim in a far off functioning monarchy, Orion Antony Abraham Alim-Verdi was a child with an unfortunately long name. His mother had insisted in honoring her brother in his naming, and his father insisted on honoring himself and his father before him. It should probably have been noticed early on that this stressed and strained compromise was only going to work for some things, but then again that had been the nature of their relationship for a long time prior. Orion would grow up in a home with two people who preferred their work to just about everything else in life. Their relationship came second, and he came third. It was just how it was.
Orion’s earliest memories consisted mostly of his aunt Carmina and cousins (Marcus and Azealia) from his mother’s side. All of them lived in his house, and when his mother and father were out, Auntie Carmie was his keeper. For all she was, Carmina was a better mother than Oriana would ever be, and not just because she had more time and practice. She was a full-time mother but also the most caring and gracious creature to walk the face of the earth as far as Orion was concerned. He adored her and was more than jealous of her older children who weren’t as adoring and doting by that point (forget that they were much much older for a moment and had their own “lives” by the time he was even really conscious of them).
Whenever and wherever his own parents were lacking, Aunt Carmie often did her best to fill in. She brought him food, bought him toys, and encouraged him to pursue whatever he wanted. He did grow quite a lot in ways he wouldn’t have otherwise without her. He learned to read and play music and for a brief time took up art (mostly to give to her). Still, despite his aunt’s best efforts, Orion always did feel outside of her nuclear family. His much older cousins were welcoming to a point, but when they fought, harsh words were sometimes exchanged between them. His and Marcus’s fights were especially bad even when Carmian reprimanded both of them for being so harsh towards one another.
As Orion got older, his parents did take more of an interest in him. His mother found him to be more bearable with a more comparable mind to teach things to, and his father found him to be a bit of a psychological pet-project. It helped that he was an intellectual sponge, taking up the knowledge and skills from both of them as if it were second nature. He showed incredible mathematical prowess and problem solving skills, and his parents encouraged it a lot. The praises he would garner were some of the only things he felt proud of, and some of his weaker interests would drop off because of this. He worked a lot, but in turn, he didn’t do much else, usually.
Among other things around this time, Orion would be indoctrinated with a heavy-handed understanding of human psychology and a natural cynicism towards humanity as a whole. For as much as his father seemed to love people and understanding people, he himself could be pretty cruel and merciless when it came to handling them. His interests in social experimentation took precedence over natural empathy and compassion— except in cases that concerned Oriana. Abe absolutely adored her? He even seemed to enjoy when Oriana called him out on his tactics. They got pretty gross and lovey-dove at the weirdest things too. Orion didn’t really get it, but he would learn the tools of the trade so to speak in time. For as much as his father loved it though, Orion grew to hate the nature of humanity he saw before him.
Overall Orion’s elementary school years were not the best but not entirely the worst either. He was sent to a gifted school for children out to advance math and science rather than become Pokemon trainers, and he learned at a fast pace along with most of his peers. There was always a constant pressure to succeed from teachers and administration, and Orion’s own ambition towards math increased tremendously. He had after school tutors and teachers at his heels telling him how great he was and encouraging him more than necessary. He developed a strong ego from this, and math became one of his few healthy emotional outlets.
Still, he wasn’t particularly good at anything else, and the pressure in other subjects was draining. He got fed up often and openly criticized his teachers for their lack of adequate teaching skill. They’d send him to the principal’s office, and the principal would call his parents. No matter what was said, Oriana was never pleased, and Orion would have an ear full about how disgraceful it was for him to be doing anything and everything. Clearly, he would never be the best even with his skill. Clearly that was the problem— not that his social skills and manners were trash and needed to be worked on.
He didn’t really connect with any of his peers for that matter either. He had a couple of positive acquaintances now and again, but they weren’t particularly meaningful connections. He didn’t want to invite them over to dinner or to spend the night playing videogames, and even if he did, it wasn’t like his parents would let him without a lot of proper planning first. The closest connection he would maintain outside of the family over those years was the son of one of his mother’s friends. Luke was a weirdo, and Orion appreciated him even if he never said as such. They had their spats, but overall they would develop a healthy friendship.
Still, Orion would only grow more self-centered, egotistical, frustrated, tired, and hard to deal with over time. When words no longer worked, he turned to his fists, and he found he liked it like that. Even when he was beat down in all senses of the word, he never stopped. Yeah, he’d inherited his parents’ stubbornness in that regard too. He’d only grow stronger in the worst ways and become more and more of a headache as he went on.
Inadvertently while arguing with his father (over some of the pettier things), Orion picked up more and more of his weaponized social skill. He learned what worked and what didn’t and how people thought and reasoned. He started tearing at his own psyche as well and started “throwing away” what wasn’t rational in it. He hated parts of himself that didn’t make sense and loathed it in others even more so. His tricks didn’t always work. Why did they not always work? Ugh!
Through middle school and into high school, Orion began to realize something was “wrong”. There was a numbness in his chest, and compulsively, he sought to quench by any means. Whether it meant dating extensively, testing out certain drugs, or starting fights, he did just about everything he could to “fix” what was “broken” in himself. Nothing helped, however, and while he didn’t realize it in himself, he was suffering badly from depression.
Dad would notice, though. The man pointed it out almost immediately after coming home from a business trip and suggested that he get on some medication immediately. Orion was a bit too young and naïve to realize this probably shouldn’t have been the immediate go-to for that sort of thing, but he took some prescription pills and found that somedays he didn’t feel quite so terrible. Other days, he was much much worse. Dad would try out several different medications for him before Orion would have enough of it and stop taking them entirely.
Orion would be thirteen when he received his first Pokemon, a Mr. Fish-esque Tynamo who was absolutely his favorite thing to ever exist. He didn’t really consider himself a trainer then nor would he ever, but he would go on to catch more Pokemon as time went on. They were his pets and friends, and in many ways they were closer to him than any of his family was by that point. He cherished them and didn’t enjoy battling with them right then. If he was going to fight, he’d fight with his fists first and foremost.
…That would slowly change over time as he grew to learn more and more about Pokemon, but yeah.
In Orion’s sophomore year of school, his mother pulled him out of school. He’d done some stupid stuff and gotten into trouble one too many times, and the school was considering booting him for good this time! Orion would have been fine with that had not Mom decided that she’d continue his education herself. She would be his teacher and master scientist. ….Well, things could be worse right? Surprisingly, he did well in her research and had a natural insightfulness that came with being overly exposed to her particular literature over a life-time. They actually grew somewhat closer during this time, and he may or may not have picked up some of her love of science.
During this time, Orion also became closer to his father (and actually got on some decent medication), and the two had some of their most meaningful moments in this era. It almost felt like he had a unified family, almost kind of sort of. He still preferred Auntie’s unconditional love and made sure to keep up with her and his cousins who… oh jeeze yeash they’re getting old hah. Well, his younger cousins were kind of cute he guessed.
All and all, it wasn’t so bad even if he did feel more isolated from the rest of the world. No really. This was great!
It was during one of his mother’s ‘in the field’ experiences that Orion would meet a young man whom he would date for quite a while. Being reintroduced to the high school mentality of sorts sort of broke him, however, and he grew rebellious again. He argued constantly with his mother over having taken him out of public school, and when she suggested he finish his senior year then, he did so— only to crash and burn in one of the most horrible ways. For as much of a social and emotional manipulator as he was, the tables were turned on him in some of the worst ways by his peers. He was an outsider to them, and when he walked in as if he owned the place, they quickly took him down a couple pegs.
It broke him for the first time, and he became almost desperate for friends. Under the influence of some less than savory counterparts, he started doing sketchy things with them. He learned the fine art of breaking windows and hotwiring cars. He learned how to wield a knife and some of the best places to stab without killing someone. He was arrested several times, and each time his Mom and Auntie would bail him out— at least up to the point that the particular judge in the region had had enough and sentenced him to time without bail. By then, however, his mother was content to leave him in there. Maybe then he’d learn a thing or two, she told herself.
Orion was heartbroken.
His time in prison would turn Orion from an occasional petty criminal into a hard core cut throat violent criminal. His first night in jail would leave him with the first of many gashing scars, and in the weeks that followed, he fought to survive. When he was thrown into solitary confinement, he fought to keep his sanity. When they pulled him out again, the walls of his cell had been scratched all over with a strange mix of mathematical and alchemic symbols. They thought he’d gone crazy, but focusing on math was the only thing that kept him functioning.
Sometime within the first year, Orion would joined a prison faction known for a particular brand of violence towards other factions. They were some of the most ruthless of the people there, and “joining” required some special circumstances. It was almost funny how much more blood was on his hands inside that prison than it had ever been outside of it. It would take a toll on his mental stability, but he would keep moving forward. He had to. He wasn’t sure what he was moving towards, but he would keep moving.
As time went on and “peace” was established and maintained around him, Orion would only grow bitter with time. Why was this happening to him? What had he ever done? Even when his aunt and his cousins came over time and again, he only ever ended up manipulating them to get stuff he wanted. Some deep, estranged part of himself felt terrible about it considering Auntie was still his favorite but what could he do? He had to survive this hellish place. No, he had to thrive in it. After a year, his father started to come more and more, and they’d have some of the harshest talks they’d ever shared between each other. His mother never came, however. He’d receive exactly one letter from her and has kept it ever since.
In the end, Orion would not end up completing his sentence. In the world outside the walls, the government was falling apart, and when there was a massive jail break, he was one to take advantage of it. He left the prison with a knife, tattoos, and a fire inside. He would go home, or rather break into his own home, and retrieve many of his belongings. He would take as many Pokemon as he could find including Mr. Fish, and he’d savage as much money as was laying around. What he wouldn’t expect was that his mother would walk in amidst his searching.
They would have a very tense, harsh talk that lasted almost fifteen minutes before he was finally ordered to leave. Take what he had with him and go. He never knew how to feel about those words and that final statement, but he would leave— not before being beaned with a wallet full of extra change. He didn’t… understand, couldn’t understand, her feelings and her inner turmoil, but he’d take the money and leave. That was what she wanted right?
After that, he took up hitman jobs. The Rebels who’d thrown the country into chaos were eager to hire people to deal with certain issues rather than waste other resources, and that suited Orion just fine. Sometimes he took simpler jobs than that. It didn’t really matter who was paying him so long as he got paid and the money was useful. Man though, inflation was becoming nauseating— or maybe it was the major loss of blood he was feeling.
Unexpectedly, Luke would get into contact with him to explain Jazz had recently gotten into some kind of trouble with the Rebels. It didn’t take him too long to get information on just what was going on, and when he went to get her, he made it damn clear they’d better leave her alone. After that, though, she started living with him, and he continued work for a while. His parents received several letters to get out of the country in the meantime. Lucky for him, they heeded those warnings. Whether it was of their own accord or not, he’d never really know. Jazz refused to go with, but whatever. So long as she took care of herself, it was fine.
When he was asked to track down some nobles that had escaped the Rebel huntings (and offered a fair bit of money for it), Orion didn’t think much of it. His head was empty, his chest was empty, nothing mattered anyway……… Maybe he just needed a change of pace. Yeah that sounded good. Jazz could stand to get the fuck out of there too. He’d travel all the way to Veria in search of these damn people— and maybe kind of sight-seeing along the way.
While in Caravella, Orion would meet Marceline Labele who would help him in his search for the nobles in question. Nikolai Laska was easy to find due to being a Gym leader, and after some preparations, Orion would go to get the job done- only to cop some feels from nostalgia on remembering he'd dated this guy previously. They'd have a good time up till Nikolai learned of what Orion was doing there, and a messy fight would ensue. Orion eventually had a full Pokemon party taken from him and was forced to get a job and settle in Sinclair should he want them back.
Heading back to Caravella, Orion would lie to Marceline to get said job and ended up working for her thereafter. He'd go on several missions to prove his worth and show off his strength, and they'd grow to have a decent employer-employee relationship as far as lesser kinds of criminal activities go. Meanwhile, his and Nik's relationship remained close for the most part, Nik overseeing his general 'rehabilitation' into something less vicious as far as he was concerned.
Some time thereafter, Luke came to Veria and taken up residence as one of its professors prompting Orion to stabilize some there. He continued to work under Marcie and live a life he's come to enjoy: relaxed, lazy, snarky individual by day and hitman by night. He's managed to keep his secret up and expanded it fooling both Luke and Nik. He has since started dating Nik for realisies and has ensured he would just as willingly destroy anyone who harmed him as much as fawn over him.
Pokémon
Skills (5/11)
Athleticism Major (2): Orion is very athletic and very muscular. He frequently goes to the gym and works out, keeping himself in tip top shape at least in a roundabout fashion. With a strength minor to bout, he can lift and carry quite a lot and do quite a lot of damage in a fight. He’s pretty agile as well making it hard to keep a hold of him in a general fight, though he wouldn’t stand up to someone who minored in it.
Strength Minor (1): Orion has quite a bit of bulky muscle, and he can lift around 150lbs comfortably. In combat, he prefers to kick rather than punch and has quite a lot of leg strength with which to do so. It’s not uncommon to get minor rib cracks from one of his kicks if one takes it head on.
Dexterity Minor (1): Orion has rather fine motor skills and puts this to the test mostly in knife throwing. So long as he has adequate time, he can usually hit the mark, but without it, it drops down to about half the time. He also uses these finer motor skills in cooking and more intricate design baking.
Agility Minor (1): Orion’s movements are light, fluid, and deceptively strong. He can get over, in, and around most obstacles, and combined with his athleticism, strength, and dexterity, he is capable of doing a good deal of parkour. It can be hard to catch him and even harder to keep ahold of him in a fight. He’s also reasonably flexible now.
Other Information
*Orion has never had a preferred nickname. People often just stick him with one, and he doesn’t really argue it. The only one he will not tolerate is being called Ori. Ori is his mother and if you wanna say her name again he’ll punch you out. Actually, don’t call him Abe either. People have tried out Rion pronounced as ‘Ryan’ among others. Antony/Annie/Tony were pet names his aunt would use from time to time.
-He is ambidextrous and writes language with his right hand and equations with his left. It actually messes with his train of thought to try and flip this even when he knows he can theoretically do so.
-Orion has suffered from depression and subsequent insomnia for years. He has prescription grade medication that he can take for it, but there are certain side effects he has from it that sometimes he just doesn’t want to deal with. This can cause him to not get adequate rest for weeks on end.
-He speaks Common and a family language/clan dialect very similar to Caravellian. It has been passed through the family for years. However, while the written language is about the same, the phonetics are very different.
-He carries knives fairly regularly and can whip them out pretty fast.
