Sooner or later mother nature reclaims all… A sombre feeling seizing Sophie Sequoia as she travelled deeper into what was once the city of Pahala, for once the researching girl was not astride her purring purple motorcycle as she cruised past buildings, instead opting for a more ‘natural’ form of transport. Beneath her a bumpy shell serving as her seat, as the pink haired girl tilted her head and pushed her locks backward she was sat upon the back of a blue being with a long neck, who seemed to be humming a soft and soothing tune that reminded one of whale song.
“Are you serenading me, Opera? Such a sweet thing…” Turning her attention away from the terrain and towards the Lapras who was carrying her, the ladylike ocean being looked around and smiled with a sense of serenity, seeming not at all put off by the murky waters through which she travelled. "A voice like that may be wasted in these ruins..." This majestic marine species always seeming to carry themselves with such grace, Sophie had felt sorry that she was forcing her friend to pass through this old, stale surface but was relieved to see that the beauty of the blue was in good spirits none the less.
“I’ll make sure you get a chance to relax in the ocean after this~” Reaching forward and rubbing one of the ear-like curls that her swimmer had either side of her head like one might pet a kitten, Miss Sequoia smiled as she promised a little bit of a reward for her partner, though wondered why at times it felt like Opera was the more mature and motherly of the two. "Us girls have to look after one another, after all..." Such a loyal and understanding Pokémon, the enchanting explorer felt that her Lapras was one of her most soothing companions and lamented that she hadn’t found many opportunities to bring her along on her work more often of late. As much as she didn’t wish to detract from certain other of her companions, it was nice having company that seemed more interested in peace than battles.

Oh? The head of Sophie Sequoia turned as a soft, almost chirping click caught her ear, from the waters that idly rolled against the buildings they had half buried around her a round, blue shape popped out of the water and gave a wide grin. A large ocean being bulging from the depths, ordinarily one might have been intimidated by a being of this size but Miss Sequoia knew better than to think that a Wailmer would attack her without being provoked and so she offered out her hand to the curious, orb-like entity.
“I’m not sure this is the best water for you to be playing in, did you get lost?” Opera slowing to cruising speed and looking toward her trainer, as the beach ball-like being bobbed along the surface and drew nearer to the hand that Sophie offered, it gave another chirping cry and spurted a little jet from each of its nostrils to confirm it’s frustration. The Lapras of Miss Sequoia murmuring softly to the whale in the soothing tone that she usually sang with, the cheeky orb ducked under the water before re-emerging in front of the seafaring steed, and seemed to begin an exchange of chirps and moans.
Is Opera giving it directions back to the sea? The girl on the back of the Lapras amused as these two ocean loving Pokémon seemed to engage in a conversation she could only guess at, it was quite fascinating to see the two strangers interact, and Miss Sequoia wondered to herself whether Wailmer and Larpas would get along in the wilds. Opera seeming to turn her head and flap her front flippers around like she was demonstrating the a path, Sophie could see that this similarly peaceful Pokémon of the sea would probably be well suited to one another, and wondered if she should take more time to study the relationships between fellow water types.
“Swim safe!” Mulling this over, as the whale ducked under the water again before appearing behind the pair, the woman waved gently as the Wailmer set off in the way that she had come, hoping that it might find its way back to the sea and possibly the pod that had forgotten it…

Could it be…? A familiar pink shape sitting by the edge of the water, dipping its tail in like some sort of strange and masochistic fishing aid, Sophie waited with baited breath to see if she might see the evolution of Slowpoke in action. Always having wondered just what about the tail of this dim-witted Pokémon coerced a Shellder to undergo such a different transformation than that which was seen in Cloyster, a few times Miss Sequoia had found herself tempted to catch the pair and study the differences in the lab, she had always found something to distract her from such a target. Now, however, with this wild creating baiting the water, might she have a chance to at least witness the evolution in progress? Well, as something clamped down on that pink appendage, she certainly thought she was going to.
Is that a Shelder? Gasping and then covering her mouth as she sat on the back of her watery tour guide and spied something that looked like fangs wrapping around the tail of the Slowpoke, the professor waited with baited breath to witness the evolution process but it would seem that nature would disappoint her. The sluggish pink sloth seeming to take forever to even flinch from the bite, by the time that the curly eared creature turned its head to look what was going on, it found that what appeared to be a clawed hand was lifting it up as something entirely more menacing that a shellfish rose from the depths.
“That’s… Barbaracle?!” An evolved monster lifting it’s body out of the water with the dim-witted creature within its grasp, as the Slowpoke blinked and barely seemed to register the fact that it was being hoisted up by something larger and far more ferocious, Miss Sequoia sprang into action and scooped an orb from her belt. Did the taste of the Slowpoke’s tail lure it to it? They are supposed to have quite a pleasant flavour… Sophie remembering her time in Johto and the stories of how some less scrupulous characters had once tried to detach and sell the tails of Slowpoke, with an arcing throw she tossed one of her team onto the ruined remnant of a building where currently the pink Pokémon was being hammered against the ground by its opponent, seemingly too dazed or dull minded to really struggle against the act.
The orb that the young woman unleashed splitting apart to reveal a round green fighter, the Quilladin known as Castan hopped forward and hammered his arms against the tough shell that surrounded him, looking a bit like a gorilla trying to intimidate a rival. However, their rocky enemy did not seem particularly impressed, and returned to simply throwing the slowpoke around after the momentary distraction.
“Castan, use Brick Break on that stone body, that should get its attention!” Sophie shouting to her plucky green warrior and giving him a plan that she hoped would prove superior, in a moment the Quilladin was thrusting his burly body forward and throwing a stubby fist forward with a determined cry. The paw of Castan colliding with enough force to send the mix of stone and claws stumbling backward with a crack in its 'chest’, after snarling the brutish barnacle dropped the Slowpoke and seemed to focus its attention onto the spiny fighter.
“Look out, Castan!” Lowering its hand-like head and lunging forward with a speed one might not expect from his half rock body, after delivering a move that seemed to be equal parts tackle and punch, Castan couldn’t react in time to block or dodge the reply that the Barbaracle gave and instead was sent rolling backward. Bouncing along the ground as he wheeled around and around, the Quilladin crashed into one of the few remaining walls left in the building they were battling in and left it in ruins, before standing back up and shaking off his hurt as best he could.
“He’s not the first tough nut we’ve had to crack, use Seed Bomb!” Sophie a little worried about her warrior after the blow he had been given, she ignored her anxiety for the time being and focused on the battle before her, giving new orders to her weary warrior. Castan nodding at her command and hunching over, with his longer forelimbs set in the ground to steady himself the spiky battler took in a deep breath before unleashing a barrage of what looked to be wooden cannonballs. Fist-sized walnuts shooting from the mouth of her monster, Miss Sequoia watched as they crossed the distance that had been created between the two fighters and squeezed her fist tight, practically jolting as the first of this bombardment collided with their cranky and craggy foe.
Almost appearing to be like grenades that exploded on contact with their enemy, the pink haired girl watched unblinkingly as one after another they shattered violently against the sturdy form of their enemy, hoping it would fall by the time the attack was one. The fickleness of fate this time turning in her favour, Sophie let out a short sigh of relief as she saw the bullying barnacle stumbled to one side before collapsing to the ground, she pulled out a fresh trap and hurled it toward her target with the aim of trapping this belligerent Barbaracle to add to her collection…

“Thanks for the ride, Opera…” The large blue being that had been carrying her thus far disappearing into her pokéball, Sophie reaffirmed her mental note to let her Lapras enjoy some easy and clean sailing the next chance she got as she moved across ground that was covered with moss and seaweed. We’ve gotten pretty deep in, but it looks like the water level is slowly slipping back… Looking over her surroundings and ducking down, after pressing her palm into the ground beneath her, Miss Sequoia noted that the floor was not particularly damp. Not soggy like a bog but only slightly damp, it looked as if the flooded fate of the older portion of Pahala was slowly starting to recede. Was this change because of recent weather, or was this waterlogged locale slowly starting to dry out? For now, the professor of ecology couldn’t tell, and wasn’t given the time to make much of a guess either. Skree! Skree! Skree! A pleading cry catching the ear of Miss Sequoia, as she turned her head toward the distraction, she found something small scurrying across the ground toward her. What in the world? A rat-sized arthropod jerking from one side to another before shooting behind the woman and shivering, behind her bent legs, Sophie looked down to see the trembling form of what looked to be a terrified Wimpod using her body for shelter, as something much larger and far more confident leapt from the water after it. A ferret-like creature splashing onto the ground and hissing as it saw the her, the pink haired explorer could tell she might well have just gotten between a hunter and its dinner and paused for a second as she wondered what she should do. However, as she glanced at the bug again and was met with a pleading set of eyes, her decision was made quickly for her. “Looks like you’re going to have to find another meal, Floatzel! I’m looking after this little guy…” Turning to face the ferret fully and straightening herself as the swimming weasel gave another growling warning, it appeared that either she did not cut a terribly intimidating figure or this particular predator was too hungry to care for her defence as it lunged forward regardless. Ducking to the side and scooping up the shivering Wimpod as she pushed her heels into the ground and rolled out of the way of a snarling strike, after skidding to a halt on one knee the professor hooked an orb from her belt and threw it into the air to release a partner to protect herself. I had been more counting on Terella to scan the ruins rather than fight, but it’s no slouch in battle either… Choosing a mechanical monster that gave a shrill chirp as it burst from its pokéball, it seemed appropriate that Sophie had chosen a Magneton when engaging in her research, given its favour with the scientific community. The small trio of orbs that made up this odd being whirling like a wheel for a few seconds as they sized the situation up, their enemy seemed rather reckless as it lunged forwards and attempted to bury its fangs in the body of Terella, but it seemed that while a Floatzel could break through the shell of the average arthropod, something made of steel was an entirely different issue. “You’ll need a much stronger bite force than that to break a Magneton!” Sophie chiding her foe as she spoke proudly of her partner’s toughness, as the floating fighter of the femme flung its attacker off and gave a buzz that seemed more irritated than pained, one of the ball-like bodies of the magnetic monster showed the barest dent from the attack but had little damage other than that. Shaking itself off before waiting on further orders, Terella had seemed to be a little bit taken by surprise by the sudden assault, but was more than willing to strike back now it had been harmed. “OK, one good Thunderbolt should take this monster down!” Sophie nodding toward her fighter as she decided to end this fight quickly, while Floatzel was an evolved Pokémon, she was confident that the electrical output of her Magneton would be more than enough to deal with this overly keen hunter. The magnets that surrounded the body of the beauty’s battler whirling around as it began to gather a golden aura around it, with a crack that seemed to make the little bug she was carrying flinch Terella unleashed a sudden volley of electricity that arced upward before shooting back down upon the Floatzel like a hammer. Unleashing a discharge that one might have expected in a storm but seemed completely out of the blue on a clear day like this one, after taking the attack head on Miss Sequoia could see that their enemy had been blackened by the attack and had lost almost all of its vigour. Only appearing to have the strength to beat a wobbly retreat back into the water, with a whimper the weasel ducked back into the murky depths from whence it had come and disappeared from sight, leaving Sophie standing with a bug in her hand. “Looks like it’s gone, although… I’m not sure it won’t try again another day?” Looking down at the cowardly creature and feeling yet another swell of pity welling up within her, the professor ducked down and held her hand out near the ground to let the craven critter go free if it chose to. “However, if you want I can send you to my lab, and you should be a lot safer there?” Taking out a fresh snare with her free hand and offering it to the bug, Miss Sequoia left the choice entirely within the hands of the anxious arthropod as to whether it would return to the wild or have a new life alongside her? “T-This is…” Blinking as what looked like almost ten black blobs seemed to be quivering in front of her, of all the discoveries that the young professor had expected to find in these ruins, a ‘field’ of wilting sea cucumbers was not one of them. Being able to tell even from a brief inspection of this swarm of Pyukumuku that they had been out of the water entirely too long, the normally bulbous beings were starting to look a little on the wrinkly side, almost as if the absence of moisture had ‘pickled’ these Pokémon without any need for vinegar.
Could it be because of the dropping water level? The mind of Miss Sequoia racing as she bounced forward to try and help this mob of moisture-deprived mounds, the hand that she ran across the skin of the nearest two, she could barely feel any trace of the slime these creatures were so famous for being covered in. This place isn’t exactly baking, but without the water they like to live in… Biting her lip as she scanned their number and tallied the group up to eight, in an instant the young specialist elected to offer some aid to these creatures and reached for her belt to summon opera for the second time today.
“Looks like I need you again, Opera!” Knowing that her Lapras might not be quite as comfortable outside of the water as she was in it, as Sophie had expected, her aquatic partner seemed quick to forgive her once she saw the circumstances. Grumbling a little as she was released from the orb in which she had been resting, the tone that Opera used seemed to hold its usual sweetness but sound all the more concerned as she spotted the squad of drooping cucumbers.
“Rain Dance might have been more substantial, but in the situation we might be able to improvise… Use your Hydro Pump and aim it at the sky, the spray it creates should be able to douse these dehydrated dears!” Thinking quickly to work around the limitations of her ‘arsenal’, Opera seemed to pick up quickly on the intent of the pink haired girl and nod, sending a jet of water skyward from her mouth with a result that looked like someone had smashed a hydrant. The high pressure spurt climbing skyward before falling back down like a shower, Sophie shivered as she felt her hair and clothing dampen from the ‘rain’ she had made but ignored the sensation for the most part. Eyes rolling across the group as her Lapras continued to shoot liquid into the sky, the young woman waited and hoped that her act hadn’t come too late to save these stranded little lumps.
“W-Whew…” Letting out a sigh of relief and patting her chest a couple of times with her fingers as one by one the Pyukumuku appeared to perk up a little, as the ground around them grew damp and their black bodies glistened with slick moisture, the lost octuplets seemed to wriggle gently before looking upward and bathing in the shower that Miss Sequoia had concocted. The Lapras behind the lady left panting by the volume of water which she had disgorged in order to try and drench the area, Sophie moved next to Opera and stroked her head and neck gently and appreciatively as she scanned the group to make sure that all of them were starting to recover.
“That was a close one, wasn’t it?” The cucumbers seeming to bob up and down gently having been revived by the watery downpour, as Sophie stood next to her Pokémon, she spoke gently to the collective and felt a certain level of responsibility in ensuring their safety. “I know that Pyukumuku like you tend to like their favourite spots, but if you stay here you won’t survive!” Knowing that they’d only end up all dried out again if they and the water levels remained as they were, the young scholar implored the mob to reconsider their choice of location, but even after saving the creatures they still seemed reluctant to follow her advice. Some of them shaking their heads while others spat out white hands that seemed to wave the notion away, the brow of the blue eyed beauty furrowed as she witnessed the stubbornness of these Pokémon first hand.
I could catch them all, Pyukumuku aren’t great fighters but… I’d feel bad attacking them even in this situation… Tempted to lift them up and carry them toward the waterline herself, as Opera tried to do what she could to convince them to move on with words only a fellow Pokémon could understand, Miss Sequoia paused for a moment as she considered a more direct route to ‘saving’ these creatures. Shaking her head as she realized she couldn’t have further hurt put onto her conscience if she launched an unprovoked attack on these innocuous oddities, Sophie decided that with common sense and combat both proving a lacking option, the only thing she had left to try was a little show of humility.
Moving a step or two forward and reaching into her pocket to pull out eight identical looking pokéballs, the young woman decided that if the personalities of the Pyukumuku made them too proud and stubborn to help themselves, perhaps a little show of clever psychology might win out. “Please, Pyukumuku… This woman needs your wisdom and aid...” Dropping to her knees and assuming a pose she had only really heard about in dramatic kinds of stories, as her long pink fringe draped across the muddy ground where the water had once stood Miss Sequoia bowed as far forward as she possibly could as she implored the monsters to act on her behalf rather than their own. “I beg of you, won’t you bless me by enjoying the nutrient rich spots my lab can offer?” Their wrinkles fading now they were once again blessed with wetness but the stubbornness that these pokémon showed reminding her of the obstinate old men, the professor reasoned that while they were unhappy being told what to do, they might just find a little bit of a chance to have their ego's stroked an entirely different kettle of fish...
Sophie Attempts an almost unheard of 8X Friendship Catch!
