The mountains was not a place Nox generally enjoyed visiting. But the wild areas outside of Aleal City were about the only place where there was still snow on the ground. Which meant it was a very good place to bring his newly obtained Alolan Vulpix and his young Amuara to frolic and play. This, of course, meant he didn't need to worry about them overheating in the sun and getting sick. Sure, they were generally pretty good at keeping themselves cooled down, but being able to let them play without a need to constantly fluctuate their body temperatures in order to keep themselves cool was a blessing. Xeo was bounding here and there, pouncing at shadows and snowflakes as the breeze caused little flurries in their path. Eira was more sedate, walking along a little ahead of Nox and seemingly just enjoying the view. Nox wondered if she missed her mother and brother. She didn't act depressed or anything of the sort, but he couldn't help but wonder if she was thinking of them as she watched a flurry of snow dance around her feet. He rarely, if ever, went anywhere without having Noire and Sorey at his side as well. The Absol and Sylveon had been with him the longest and their presence was comforting in these unknown wilds. He trusted them to have his back no matter what.
It was Eira who found the entrance to the caverns and decided to do some exploring. Xeo bounded after her, happy to be exploring with his new family, and Nox could only smile and follow them. As the walked and it began to get darker in the caves, he pulled out his flashlight from his pack so that they could see where they were going. He had no idea what they might find but with the amount of noise his group was currently making he doubted any wild pokemon would harass them. "Alright guys. I think it's time to go back. There's nothing to see here." He said after a while. Eira and Xeo turned to look at him with pleading expressions while Sorey tightened the ribbon around his wrist ever so slightly and gave it a few tugs as if to say 'come one, what are you stopping for'. Nox rolled his eyes and sighed. "Fine. A bit longer then." After another couple minutes of walking, the beam of his flashlight shone on something sticking out from the rocky wall. Curious, Nox moved closer to inspect it.

"What do we have here?" Nox questioned as he drew closer to the object that had caught his eye. It gleamed golden in when the beam of his flashlight fell on it. It was difficult to see, however, trapped in the wall like it was. He tried to pry it loose by hand without much luck. His pokemon looked on curiously as he stepped back and eyed the object. "Alright Noire, very carefully use Zen Headbutt on that bit of the wall there. Maybe that will knock it loose." The Absol stepped forward and a faint shimmer surrounded her, concentrated mostly on her head and horn. After a moment of meditation, she launched herself forward and her dark horn connected with the wall about an inch from the amber colored stone. The force of the impact knocked the stone loose and Nox almost lost it in the dark as it skittered away from them on the ground.
A bit of wild searching with his light and eventually the stone was located once again and Nox picked it up. Nox that he could see it more closely, he realized it was as familiar to him as the pokemon tooth necklace around his neck or the tattoo on his wrist. "Old Amber. I should have known." He spoke mostly to himself but he lowered the fossil to show his pokemon. "I bet there's somewhere here that we can have this revived into an Aerodactyl." He told them. Noire glanced at him, her gaze concerned, and he smiled at her. "I know. Karjan would have loved this. I wish he was here to see it." He told her and she moved to his side, pressing against him and offering him comfort. "Thanks girl. Well, what now? Shall we move on or see what other fun things we can find in this old cave?" He questioned, tucking the fossil safely into his pack. Eira and Xeo immediately turned and headed deeper into the cave. "More exploring it is then." Now that he'd found an interesting treasure, he was more keen on letting his team explore a bit longer. Who knew what else they might come across in here.

The tunnel was mostly quiet as the group walked, the only sounds made by their breathing and the pawsteps of his group of pokemon. Each of them was focused on keeping an eye out for anything else of interest. So far, they'd found a few strangely shaped rocks and what looked like a piece of broken glass (Which Nox carefully picked up to dispose of properly once they headed back to town). But nothing that appeared to be of value. All the same, his pokemon seemed to be enjoying themselves so he praised them for each oddball item they pranced up to him with. Even Noire had strayed off to look and brought back an old arrowhead. How and why it was in these caverns he had no idea but it was an interesting find all the same and he rubbed her head as he tucked it in his bag with a small handful of the other 'treasures' his pokemon had found. "Alright guys, you can show me what you find but we're not taking everything with us. We'll put most of it back for other people to find later, okay?" Though his pokemon seemed disappointed that they wouldn't be keeping their treasures, they continued their searching anyway.
It wasn't until Sorey trotted back with a stone shaped like a heart that Nox noticed the Sylveon had been trying to sneak an item out with him. Unfortunately for Sorey, the black ribbon he'd carefully arranged amongst his own stood out against the white and pink of his fur like a sore thumb. "Sorey what is that?" The Sylveon chirped at him and held the midnight colored bow up for his trainer to look at. "A ribbon of some sort? I've never seen anything like it. It kind of looks like something made specifically for an Umbreon." He mused, taking the ribbon from Sorey's feelers to get a better look at it. If someone had lost this, they were quite unlikely to ever find it again. Which meant he could probably keep it for himself. "Demi might like it, what do you think?" Sorey's eyes widened and he nodded enthusiastically. "Alright, we'll give it to her later. You want to carry it back or shall I put it in my bag?" Sorey deftly plucked the ribbon out of Nox's hands and placed it back on his own head. Nox secured it so that the Sylveon wouldn't drop it and the pink and white fairy pranced off to see what else he might find.

It seemed the novelty of finding interesting things to show off was beginning to wear off for his pokemon. They weren't brining back as much stuff and Noire and Eira had already stopped wandering to search for them. Xeo and Sorey were still at it, however. The Sylveon was as chipper as ever and the young Vulpix was just happy to be exploring and not trapped in a lab where he couldn't run and play as much. As long as they were still having fun, Nox would let them wander for a bit longer.
The tunnel started to narrow out a little and they had to move in single file. Xeo and Sorey led the way with Noire behind them. Nox followed her and Eira followed after him. He chose to do it this way because if the tunnel got too narrow for Eira he could direct her to back up since there was not enough room for her to turn around. As they exited into a larger open cavern, the tunnel grew just narrow enough that Eira had to struggle to get through. As she did so, some loose stone in the wall broke away and clattered to the ground. At first nox paid no attention to it as he checked to make sure Eira was okay. Other than a few small scratches, she was fine. Together they checked the wall for signs of weakness that might indicate an imminent collapse. But the cavern wall looked sturdy and the stones that had fallen seemed to have been knocked loose by something hitting the wall. Perhaps a pokemon attack or someone searching for fossils or other treasures. As Eira shifted through the bit of rubble, she unearthed a stone that was a different color from the rest and Nox bent to inspect it a bit closer. "That's a Dome Fossil. These caves must be full of stuff like this." He commented, picking the fossil up and tucking it into his bag alongside the Old Amber they'd found earlier. With that done, he turned to investigate the rest of the cavern with his pokemon.

Their search of the cavern had turned up very little of interest. Whether they had simply missed it in the dark or anything of value had already been picked up Nox couldn't say. All he knew was that it was getting to be time to consider leaving. As he gathered up his team he noticed that Xeo seemed to be missing. The Alolan Vulpix hadn't come when he'd called. "Xeo, come on buddy. It's time to leave." Nox called again. This time there was an answering yip from somewhere in the cavern. Nox shone his flashlight this way and that until the beam fell upon the white fur of the snowy Vulpix.
Or mostly white fur. Xeo had, apparently, found a patch of ground that was soft and was digging into a mess of dirt. His fur was smudged with mud and Nox groaned a little. "Now look at you. You're a mess. What are you even digging for anyway? There can't be anything that great in the mud." Xeo huffed and continued digging, eventually pulling free a rough looking stone. He happily trotted over to Nox with his prize and the Ranger shook his head. "Really? All that for a rock?" Nox bent to inspect what the Vulpix had found and was only mildly surprised to find that the pup had dug up a Jaw Fossil. "Okay, so not just a rock. Still, no more digging got it? You're going to need a bath now." The pup whined at him. "You're the one that went and got all dirty. If you don't want a bath next time don't dig in the dirt." He chided gently. The pup huffed and Nox rolled his eyes before recalling Xeo and Eira back into the pokeballs. "Alright you two, let's head for home. Sound good?" Noire and Sorey made sounds of agreement and led the way back toward the entrance of the cave.
