Yue Leon Alias*
Yue/Leon | 28 (34)** | Male / Kalisexual |
Sinclair City | Trainer | Vacationer/Scientist |
Appearance
Standing 5'10'', Yue has a slim but deceptively strong frame. His white choppy hair is often left to do what it will in any direction it will, but on formal occasions, he has been known to pull it back. His features are slim, often allowing his face to contort readily into different expressions. He hides the left side of his face via this hair, but underneath it, a dark eye socket is all that remains. His remaining eye is blue, but he has worn a red contact for years (both to correct for his vision and because it fits his personal aesthetic).
His clothing ranges wildly on a day to day basis, but he mostly wears things that are long and comfortable. Colors such as purples, blues, whites, and blacks are the spectrum he wears most. Long sleeves often cover his hands, and he likes it that way.
Personality
Towards most people, Yue Leon Alias can come off as fairly “normal”. He smiles at others readily, is sociable enough, and tends to get along with others. Small talk is a breeze even if, more often than not, he’d prefer not to. He’s as witty as he is dry, and as cool headed externally as hotheaded as he is internally. Even if you manage to piss him off, it’s unlikely he’ll show you a thing— at least when he’s holding back. If he sees a reason to, he’d just as easily beat you with his cane, all with a smile. Only a few have the pleasure of knowing what a harsh person he could be.
Yue is not a good person and knows this. His science is controversial, and he honestly couldn’t give a damn what other people thought of it. He does what he wants, whatever that may be, and if people hate him for it, well who cares? He’s not out to make friends (though he’s not out to make enemies either). All things boil down to allies and financial contributors, with the sole exception of Kali who means the world to him. Everyone else, just like every Pokemon, is just a tool at the end of the day (or at least he likes to tell himself that).
Ambition drives an all-consuming intellect when it comes to Yue. He is someone who eats, breathes, and sleeps his science and craft often to the point that he forgets to eat anything else or actually sleep. He is a scientist first and a person after- or at least he would like to believe so. Having been drug away from his research and on a traveling spree with his wife, he’s been on an extended vacation that has slowly been driving him crazy. He wants to work on machines and study Pokemon biotechnology again and has been a little antsy as of late.
Yue has been trying to substitute this by extensive reading and extra learning (to some avail). He has a formal grasp of Verian culture to an unusual extent for someone from the outside, and he can slip into most social settings with ease because of it. He also is well versed in all types of things inside of and outside of Pokemon and does like learning for its own sake to some degree. He’s well versed in numerous types of human and Pokemon healing arts and could probably put a few sutures in someone if absolutely necessary. He’s also got all the jargon to back it up.
History
Born in the deep south of a far off functioning monarchy, a child known as Yuan would start off with a luck status of -5. His father, a former scientific researcher, died in an accident that would claim nearly an entire company he’d worked for when the boy was little over a year old. His mother, a sickly woman who hadn’t been ‘well’ since the start of her pregnancy, would pass away on (as in the day of) his sixth birthday. What memories he has of these early years are vague and roughly unimportant. However, he does remember being hungry and angry even in his earliest memories.
Without any siblings or family connections, the child would be alone after his mother passed. The kingdom deposited him in an orphanage that at least had a semi-stable food supply if not the best care or treatment. Yuan gained weight and grew in those years but was never truly satisfied or happy. He clashed with nearly everyone and seemed to have an unshakeable pride for almost no reason. Even if he wasn’t confident in who his parents were, he was confident in who he was, and people just didn’t seem to get that. Well, most adults just saw this as a seven-year-old being rude and prideful and all- and his peers didn’t want to understand him anyways.
Yuan would be in the orphanage until he was almost eleven. Though they weren’t granted Pokemon and sent on their own Pokemon Journey, the kids at the orphanage had a habit of running off about that age regardless. Yuan was tired of the constant pushiness and frustrated by feeling so isolated. He couldn’t connect with anyone there truly, and it didn’t seem like he was getting adopted any time soon. A couple of couples had looked into him but it always sort of fell through. When a few of the other kids mentioned leaving as a group, he decided to go as well. He wouldn’t stay with them very long, but the boys did manage to do better than if one child was out alone.
The land in the south was rather desolate. It was always a struggle to survive. Whenever they could, the boys crashed in Pokemon Centers and other places that didn’t ask for payment for a night. Most of the time they camped out under the stars. When he was twelve, Yuan would get into a horrible fight with a traveler who seemed to have taken an interest in the boys as a group and individually. In the scuffle, a Psychic Pokemon would try to quell the fighting only to push Yuan to the brink of sanity. He doesn’t remember why he tore his own eye out now, but has the vague impression it was in a ditch effort to make the Pokemon get out of his head.
Yuan would awaken in a hospital with no one else around. The damage to his eye was so extensive that the doctors were forced to remove it rather than try and salvage it. He had suffered other less extensive wounds that he had no memories of. His group and the traveler were nowhere to be found. To say he was bitter was an understatement. When asked for his name and family information, he refused to give it. They continued to badger him for a while, and finally he simply lied. He was Leon, someone from a far-off place with no other family or connections. They didn’t quite believe him but didn’t push the subject any further. He would stay in the hospital for a long time after that.
Eventually a too-kind-for-her-own-good Nurse Joy took it upon herself to take him in. She had three boys of her own, but they were all adults now. Raising another didn’t seem like a problem. Yue didn’t protest but didn’t exactly open up in the way she expected either. He mostly swayed between anger and depression. He would go days without eating for almost no reason— before becoming ravenous and fierce enough to devour enough to make him sick. Over time, the nurse managed to get him on an eating and sleeping schedule, but it was a lot of push and pull on her part. He never would get better at taking care of himself.
The emotional burn out was exhausting, and eventually Leon hit a point of apathy. He started getting up, doing stuff, smiling more. He had interests? Sort of? He read all the books “Mother” had in her house and started seeking more over time. The nurse was more than willing to accommodate and encourage this behavior. She tried to get him to go to school, but he refused adamantly and instead he could learn on his own. Sometimes he’d follow her to work (which she also encouraged heavily). He learned a great deal on his own but seemed to be less than enthused to learn from others. He carried a natural defiant air that was just off putting to nearly everyone he talked to. Friends and peers were still hard to come by.
He would, however, seem to be rather good with Pokemon. He had a natural knack for healing tricks and getting Pokemon to sit still long enough to let him help them. Mother encouraged it heavily and seemed to be very proud of him for it. Still he felt rather … apathetic towards it. Sure, he could do it, and he did, but the actual arts were meh. Pokemon were ok most of the time, he guessed. It was something to do at least, aside from read all the time (especially when reading sometimes became a long-lasting headache on his missing eye side???).
He finished his “Pokemon Center education” at seventeen but had no real desires or prospects. He could always work at the clinic and was encouraged to do so, but meh. Mostly he mooched and tended to do nothing all day long. That was, at least, until a particular man walked into the Center one day. He had a vaguely different feel to him than anyone the young man ever met, and when they stated chatting, he found his own ideals realized in this man. He was interesting and very knowledgeable, a scientist with a goal. Of course, at the time he didn’t know he worked on Shadow Pokemon, but his interest was certainly sparked and he wanted to try out “research”. The ambition (and his own knowledge) gave him a leg up, and the guy decided he might be useful.
It turned out the lab was …. in an entirely different region, and Mother was not pleased to have her son wandering off but… Seeing how excited he was for the first time in forever and considering he was almost a legal adult anyways she…. let him go on some stipulations. After that, he was all but packed up and gone. When they got there and asked for his name, he lied again saying he was Yue. They accepted him on the grounds the man who’d found interest in him would be his keeper for a while.
Invested in the lab in some terrible ways, Yue followed through with his “studies” and his practices without morally questioning it. He enjoyed doing it and worked altogether too hard and too long. Sometimes his body would just give out and oh, right, he’d forgotten to eat and sleep for the last couple of days again oops. Cipher… well considered it more or less a plus? He worked hard? He was loyal? And if he died overworking himself, well oh well?
Eventually Yue would be given his own Shadow Pokemon as a reward for such obscurely blind loyalty and knowledge as an intermediate researcher. The Flygon was hard to handle, and there was a side project to figure out how to smooth this out, but… Yue was enthralled. For the first time in a while, he’d go out, flying on the sands on her. He laughed a lot and seemed so much waywardly happy. The others in the lab wondered who’d killed and replaced him more than a couple of times but really, it was just another change in Yue. He had never felt so happy.
Over time, he acquired other Pokemon of his own, mostly those useful to powering the lab. During his time spent with Faya, however, he accidentally purified her. It startled him, truly, and Yue did his best to keep it a secret until he could Shadowify her again. However, before that day came, the world around them came crashing down. Cipher had been challenged and was collapsing. Yue, along with several others, was sent away least they be caught and add to the charges and problems Cipher already faced. He was sent home to the monarchy now on the brink of falling apart from internal struggles of its own. It was there that he made several contracts with several of the high nobles hoping to get Shadow Pokemon for themselves. It was a lucky opportunity.
Yue would stay in the fallen monarchy for some time after that using the broken-up factions to further his projects. He sided with none of them and had no interest in the conflicts of the country as a whole. He never even got back into contact with Mother. He just worked on his science fueled with a need. He’d fill the world with Shadows regardless of who won or lost. Through those years, he’d gather up an entire lab full of researchers. They came from all different times and backgrounds, and he would learn a lot of what had happened in the Orre. He considered going back from time to time but had his own work now and wanted to focus on that.
It was in this way that he also met Kali, a daughter of a member of Cipher. She was young, stubborn, ambitious, and honestly very annoying in the beginning. However, over time he realized she was… also sort of perfect, somehow? She may not have had the background into how Shadows were made, but she learned quickly and provided much needed resource of Pokemon on top of that. She also pushed him to take care of himself. When he didn’t, she went out and got Pokemon that would. It…. It was nice that she cared so much??? And that their goals were aligned. And she was beautiful??? What???
Well this was weird? But nice? And amazing? Wtf? Hey wait a minute stop it he needs to work!
And this… is how it went on for quite some time. Before he realized it, they’d gotten together and then got engaged. When the lab was finally strong enough to stand on its own financially speaking, they even got married. It all set into motion a life Yue would never have expected for himself. He felt so successful in his science and weirdly successful in life in general. It was great and let him mellow out quite a lot. A war raged on around them, but Yue was basking in the sunlight of his own research.
But… Kali wanted to travel, and Yue had promised he would eventually- after he finished this one more tweak and looked into this and that and figured out why this was doing that and a grand number of things and— Hey what are you-?
Long story short, he’d wake up on a plane. Apparently, they were going on a vacation whether he wanted it or not. He protested the entire plane trip but finally relented when it seemed she’d somehow covered everything for a year if not longer? Kali how long had you been planning this? Jkasdakjsdhasd.
They’d travel through a couple of regions, seeing the sights and learning the stories (and taking some stupid yet funny photos). Finally, they’d end up in Veria of all places. The diversity was interesting he guessed. But ehhhh he was kind of getting bored and itching to get back to some science, damn it. The fact that the journey had purified his Shadows also added to this general feeling >o/

Other Information
*Yue has gone through a slew of names in his life course. His birth name is actually very estranged to him now and his birth surname even moreso. He's picked out names for himself and enjoys the looks of confusion he gets at his surname. To be very sure, however, this is his name as far as he is concerned. It's not a joke (ok it is the joke but still).
** Yue has said for years that he was twenty-six, up until recently when he decided twenty-eight had a nice ring to it. In reality, he is thirty-four chronologically and physically.
