"Yawwwwn~"
Harper was on the beach, sitting in a reclined fashion and taking in the sites. She was waiting for some results from her computer and was trying to shoot the breeze in the meantime.
She had been pretty excited to roll into Caravella. She had only been here once in her life and she had been around 8 at the time when she had. Memories of the place were a bit fuzzy to the 20 something, mostly remembering well... remembering it at this point.
It had been so big in her memory. The ancient culture at the time made the place feel like a place from a picture book.
Coming again was like being eight years old all over again, an experience she didn't exactly need help with. It really was exactly how she remembered.
She wasn't particularly blue or anything. It was hard to be gloomy when you woke up to a big sun and fresh air.
She took in the sites around her. There was a computer to her left in the shade, a little laptop that was scanning something as it connected to some strange looking device via a cable. There was Max, her little gray.. "friend" who she assumed was enjoying the sun. Getting a read on Max was impossible really but he seemed to be enjoying basking in the warmth. She had gotten him a little Alolan style shirt that she thought was cute in.
Now she just needed a ghost to crash the party, she was getting so sleepy on this beach!

"The sand is great, Max.."
Oh yes. Who couldn't get lost in the feeling of a warm beach? She guessed it was true that once you got past the initial intensity of heat...
"I got to do this more often... or maybe visit a suana." If there was one thing to be said about swimsuits, which were otherwise an embarrassment to Harper... it was this. It was nice to let her body even partially out of its fabric prison and get to enjoy this kind of feeling...
If Max had any thoughts about this he kept them to himself. He was sending lights out towards the beach, but that sort of behavior was normal. He was always just sending strange communications to things that weren't there. Probably his mothership or something...
Who cared? It was so warm...
Her peaceful trance nearly shifted to a full-on nap in the sun before a sudden voice nearly made her jump. She adjusted to the light again for a moment in time to see a woman about her age, maybe just a bit older standing above her. She had seen her helping her kids in the distant, hoping the pair of rapscallions wouldn't come up and start touching her stuff. Her voice was soft nurturing, although was a bit baby-talk for Harper's liking. "Hey sweetie, did you remember to put on sunscreen? You wouldn't wanna wake up all burned up, would you?"
Harper got really embarrassed quickly, blushing a bright red color that would put a tomato to shame. "I.. I forgot, t-thanks..."
As her mind raced with exactly how she felt about being mothered by this stranger, she noticed something at the corner of her eye. Max was actually not sending lights to nothing.. there was..
A ghost!? Her alien companion was standing at the edge of the beach sending lights to a strange pink ghost that was hovering over the water. Could it be her? Lady Madeline!? The ghost certainly fit the profile... she could easily imagine that a ghost with such a flowing form could be the manifestation of a mournful maiden. An excited and goofy smile spread across her face and she picked up her feet and began to run over to the Pokemon.
"Nu-uh-uh!" Oh. That's right. The well-meaning woman who couldn't turn off mom mode.
'Ma'am, please..'
"No playing until you put on your sunscreen, missy. You don't want to damage your pretty skin."
She turned her head to face the woman, who was standing with her hands on her hips in a very assertive fashion. Sending all the motherly signals that there was going to be no arguing with her. She pulled out a bottle of sunscreen and held it out, expecting Harper to take it and use it. Harper gulped comically, attempting to weigh her options.
"I'm going to put on the screen, cross my heart and hope to die, Ma'am!" She smiled sheepishly, waving it off. "I just need to get my Pokemon, he's standing on the beach and I don't think he can swim."
"He's fine, sweetie. He's just playing with his friend. I'll watch him. He's nowhere near the water. Now make sure to get all over, okay?"
Darn darn darn. She tugged the bottle away from the woman and started applying sunscreen as fast as she could. Every second spent having a confrontation with this woman was a second wasted. The mom made sure Harper applied it to every inch of her before she was satisfied to take it back, but by the time Harper turned back around to go after her sighting.. it was gone.
The look of anguish on her face would put Edvard Munch's The Scream to shame. It was there... it was there...

Lady Madeline was possibly spotted at 0940. My detection and recording instruments didn't go off, cause unknown. The various reports about a humanoid shape, pale color, whispy waif looking Pokemon with a long flowing dress matched completely.
Harper paused as she continued her log, sighing for a moment. If Papa had been here none of this would have happened. He would have known how to fix their instruments. She was used to logging information with UPIN, but used to simply transcribing as her father dictated. Coming up with details was tough, and she felt unsure about her assumptions without someone to bounce this off of.
Could she really continue their work like this?
She huffed and started to type again, pushing away the thoughts.
It stood communicating in some fashion with 0147 [Max], causing me further questions. Ghosts speaking with confirmed extraterrestrials? Can 0147 detect spirits? Is perhaps Lady Madeline herself an alien?
"Whatcha doiiiiiin?"
Harper jumped, "Wha!?!" squealing and looking over at the sound of the voice. Her face red, her expression intense. She found herself face to face with one of the children of the insistent mother, attempting to come over and peek at her work. She quickly slammed the top of the notebook in a flash, grinning. "Nothing, I was just writing something. What's up?" She kept her composure, smiling at the girl who looked about 9 years old.
"Nothing. I'm Mackenzie." She invited herself to the table without another word. "Mom said I should come play with you." Her dreary sounding tone, bored expression, and the way she sprayed herself over the table made her look less than pleased by the motion.
Harper gave her a smile and for a moment glanced over to see that yes, her mother was staring over at them. "You don't have to at all though! I'm totally fine being boring over here! You can go back and do whatever it is you want to do."
Mackenzie didn't move at all, making it obvious that she really didn't feel like leaving at least immediately. Instead she grabbed one of Harper's books and flipping through it before pushing it away in disgust. "Why are you reading this stuff?"
Harper laughed. "I like this stuff. It's interesting! They are about ghosts that people saw in the area! Full of all sorts of strange and mysterious things. You don't think that's cool?!"
Mackenzie was less than impressed. "Nu-huh. You're weird." There was no malice or cruelty in her voice, it was said simply as a boring matter of fact.
And because Harper wasn't a child she wasn't hurt by her words either. Quite the opposite. "Yeah, I am." she grinned and laughed, getting a smile out of Mackenzie.
Time passed without much more spoken. Harper eventually went back to writing her sighting log to UPIN... but her mind occasionally shifted her companion. She had just been sitting around over there. Initially Harper had assumed the woman had sent her daughter over, thinking Harper could use a playmate. She was just some kid typing alone on a computer on a beautiful morning at the beach.
But maybe it was really Mackenzie that needed a playmate...
"What's this?" Her voice, still bored sounding, was playing with Harper's detection antennae. Harper trusted Mackenize with the truth just like before. "It's for finding ghosts. It connects to my computer and alerts me when it picks up stuff."
Mackenize seemed unimpressed by it, blowing a raspberry and letting it fall back on the table. A few more minutes past before they spoke again.
"Do you wanna go swim?" The voice of the kid didn't sound petulant and bratty for the first time, instead of sounding a bit softer and a bit more shy, but it was also the most interested she had sounded for quite a while. Harper was glad that she finally let it out, instead of just looking over at the beach with puppy dog eyes, waiting for Harper to mention it.
Harper didn't want to though because it meant admitting something that embarrassed her, and she started to blush. "I.. um.. I can't swim actually. You should go swim though! Don't wait for me!"
"You can borrow my old floaty..." she said, whining a bit.
"I'll just slow you down though. I'm sure you're, like, an expert swimmer, right?" The idea of using a floaty didn't really make it sound more appealing at all. Really embarrassing more like it.
"Come ooonn..." she wailed, looking discouraged. "Is there something wrong with me?" She looked hurt a bit. Oh no... oh no... oh no...
....
And so she found herself wafting a bit in the beach, a bright yellow inner tube wrapped around her. She was filled with panic and clutching it for dear life, making a goofy face that Mackenzie found hillarious. "You're wierd, Harper!"
She felt somethign swim past her, making her squeal and cling to the tube even tighter. The water was still a bit cold and being in this untamed water felt more frightening the small pools she remembered from a kid. Why would anyone do this? Swim on the beach? This is where Lady Madeline brought her victims to die? Didn't Mackenzie know that?
N-Not that she was going to say anything... didn't want to scare the kid.

Sure, Harper had felt pretty good about herself... helping a kid's day get a bit brighter and all that. But once she was sure that she wasn't about to be drug down into the deep blue sea by Lady Madeline.. everything that was happening set in. Her father always deftly handed these sorts of situations, the most she really getting exposed to was pinched cheeks. Now, without Papa, she was swimming out in the sea with some kid in an inner tube...
Sigh...
The sights at the very least, she had to admit.. were good. Water Pokemon of all shapes and sizes were playing around her feet, although the rippling of herself bobbing along in her bright yellow inner tube occasionally obscured it. Some Pokemon playfully swam past her legs, occasionally one would bust out and say hello. A beautiful coral Pokemon was especially enchanting, and she smiled at it.
"That's a Corsola!" Mackenize said, proud of herself.
Harper could only grin. She was happy the Pokemon felt safe around her... and although she was nervous she pulled out her hand and gently pat it on the head.
"Neat..." A big grin stretched on her face, her mood shifting as quick as the tide.

Harper was fully distracted from her embarrassment from her imposed kid status and immersed herself in the joy of all these new sights. There was always new Pokemon to discover and new stories. A pair of glowing lights appeared under the depths of the waters and Harper practically jumped out of her inner tube.
"Mackenzie, Mackenzie! Look! Look!" she pointed, eagerly. "Did you see that!? Maybe that was underwater fire! Ghost fire! For sure!" She watched as her playmate made a very skeptical look on her face and then smirked. "You're wierd, Harper! I don't believe in that kid stuff anymore!" she said. "It was totally just some Pokemon!"
Harper pouted as the Chinchou she couldn't see far under the water swam quickly away, her pitch getting higher as she got embarrassed. "It's not kid stuff!" And although Mackenize quickly attempted to argue this point, they were both interrupted by her mother calling her back to go home. Calling her name loudly from back at the sands, Mackenzie said she was coming and turned back to Harper.
A bubble of sadness hit her stomach as Harper realized she was genuinely sad this kid was going home. "Oh um.. I.. I had fun.."
Had she really? Playing with some kid... there was no way right? She thought of the fact that she could get back to her work, document the ghost fire, and everything else...
"Me too! You can keep the inner tube, I don't need it anymore!" Mackenize smiled at her small companion, enjoying the ego boost of being an apparent older friend with experience, imagining this must be how her friends wtih little sisters felt. It was nice. "I'm gonna call you, kay?"
Harper's eyes grew wide. Wait, what? "Call?" And Mackenize giggled. "Yeah, I got your number while we were playing with your stuff. See ya!"
Harper was left to waft about in the water, not rushing back to her expensive toys. As the beach grew quiet and she stopped wanting to think about how pathetic she felt right now, excited that some kid might talk to her some time... she let herself have a little cry in the water.
