"Huh?"
There he stood, kneeling down next to a rather thick line of bushes, examining the berries that hung from the short branches. A pinkish, partially shriveled up berry lie in his sights at present, and his gaze darted back and forth between the berry and a small booklet in his hand. The book lay open to a page that included two berries that closely resemble the one on the bush. "Well... shit." Quite the difficult situation here. If it was one of the berries on the page, it could cure Confusion, but if it were the other, if the pokemon did not like the flavor, it would end up confused instead.
"Damnit... I'm really not sure..." A pair of tannish furry tails would suddenly wag across his view as his Ninetales, Azria, walked up beside him, taking a closer look at the berry bush. She would give the berry a few sniffs before pulling her face away, wrinkling her face in disgust. With a light chuckle, Rik would shake his head, patting Azria on the head for her assistance. "Mago it is. Thanks for the help, Az." Pocketing the small booklet, he would then pull out of the same pocket a small tin. Popping open the clasp would reveal a number of compartments, many of them holding berries of different shape, size, and color, with a few empties as well. Rik would waste no time in beginning to pluck a few of the decidedly Mago berries, placing them in a formerly empty compartment. Persim may be better, as there was no risk of confusion, but something is better than nothing. Azria would take a few steps back away from the bush, still trying to get the nasty scent out of her nose, keeping an eye on their surroundings. Made by Maelys

Notice something Azria certainly would. A big ol' bat-dragon that seemed to be... well, sort of draping over something else. "Gah... would you quit that already?" The Noivern expressed his delight at being basically dragged by his trainer as his wings were draped over her shoulders. Most certainly, he would not stop. A grumble came from the woman as she continued trudging along. This new part of her team was sort of a nuisance, but he was gorgeous and she could tell he would be strong.
All of a sudden, though, he let out a very different cry than before. The redhead perked a little and tried to look around, but... honestly, there was so much life here with the plants and everything that even her aura sight had a hard time focusing on human or Pokemon life. "What is it?" The Noivern cooed in response to her, staring over at Rikkan and his Ninetales. A hum came from Sachiko before she started her way toward the ranger and his Pokemon. "Oi! How's it going?" Once she got closer, she could smell the berry herself. It was almost overwhelmingly sweet smelling to her and she just blinked at the bush a moment. Huh. Why hadn't she thought about that? Of course there had to be wild berries. She felt like an idiot. The Noivern sniffed at Azria, leaning over Sachiko to accomplish this and causing the woman to growl lightly at him.

Azria would continue to watch the strange pair warily as they approached, mild curiosity in her eyes. Turning back to Rikkan for a moment, she would let out a low bark, alerting him to the newcomers before returning her gaze to scanning their surroundings, her ears perking up. Sparing a glance toward the newcomers, Rik would wordlessly hold up a hand with a small wave, returning to his "gardening" just as swiftly. He recognized the pokemon draped over the young woman's shoulders, he had met a trainer with a Noivern a month back.
Regardless, it amused him how this one seemed to be lazing around, letting its trainer more or less drag it. As the woman approached, she called out a greeting to him, an informal, straightforward greeting. "S'going fair. Not good, not bad. Found something, but it ain't what I need. Still, something is better than nothing, y'know?" It wouldn't take long to fill up the small compartment with Mago berries. He would close the tin and return it to his pocket before standing back up, Azria following suit beside him. He took a moment to stretch his back before turning to the redhead and extending a hand.

The redhead nodded to his assessment of how the day was going and then again in response to his question. "Why do you need a particular kind of berry?" Sachiko had no idea the berries in this place had special abilities or effects when eaten. When his hand was extended, the woman looked down toward it but not quite at it. Then she reached out to take it, careful to not miss it.
"Sachiko," she'd return the introduction with a firm shake of his hand. The Noivern screeched relatively quietly -- not enough to deafen or necessarily cause discomfort, but it was still a screech. "I haven't given this one a name yet. Just caught him recently. He's... overly friendly, though." This comment caused the dragon to beam as if it were a compliment, which it clearly wasn't intended to be.

Her handshake was firm and solid, a good sign of a strong mind. Her name was quite interesting, too. Seemed like a Johtoan name. "Sachiko, huh." Azria's ears perked up for a moment as she detected some skittering in the bushes, but lay back down once more as it passed. Rikkan cast a glance of incredulity at the dragon that continued to drape itself over Sachiko's back, mildly amused, though somewhat perturbed by its laziness. "Seems you've got your work cut out for you with that one." The Ninetales would let out a long yawn before sitting back down, laying her head down on her forelegs.
Rik thought for a moment. "Well, the Sitrus berry is very useful for reenergizing a weakened pokemon, the Pamtre and Rabuta berries are very strongly flavored ones that are often used as candies for helping a trainer improve their bond with their pokemon, and berries like the Kebia can help give a pokemon resistance to Poison attacks. There are all iknds of berries, some wild, some artificially bred, with a myriad effects. As a pokemon Ranger, I try to rely on nature and the berries it provides, because you can't restock on potions and revives while out in the field."

Sachiko listened carefully as the Pokemon settled a bit, put its feet on the ground and just kept its wings over her with his head on one shoulder. He stared at Rikkan carefully as he spoke of berries. Neither of them really reacted to whether the trainer had her hands full or not. In Sachiko's case, this was because he wasn't wrong. As far as she was concerned, this Pokemon would be worth it, though.
Once the ranger was finished with his explanation, the woman tilted her head slightly. "Ranger. Huh. You know... as correct as you may be about not being able to restock... you could just make sure you're prepared." Her brows furrowed and one rose as she tried to figure out if he was smart or stupid. "I only heard about rangers before you. Never heard too much detail," she'd change the subject a bit. Maybe he wouldn't notice the insult hidden in her words.

Her response was simple enough. There is a measure of caution in stocking up for the worst, especially when he runs out of the important berries like Sitrus and Chesto. Shops generally sell useful recovery items for cheap, at least some items. That said, shop items couldn't be relied on for everything. There are shop items for most issues that you can run into, however they didn't cover everything. "I could. But then I wouldn't be getting as much practice in tracking down what I need. It's all about familiarization with your surroundings." This was also true. If he kept stocked on shop items, the urgency of acquiring what he needed would not be as strong.
So she hadn't heard much about Rangers before him. It's true that the Ranger Union is short-handed in Veria, so it wouldn't be surprising that she knew little about them. Still, it hurt a little that his allies weren't around much in the region. There had already been one disaster in Veria about a year back, and he was but one of few Rangers who answered the call. Or at least could answer the call. "Can't say I blame you. There aren't many of us here in Veria. S'why I got shipped over from Orre. How about you? You a local or a tourist?" Made by Maelys

The redhead sort of squinted at him a bit as he spoke. Suppose he could be right... Sachiko did a half-shrug, mostly because her shoulders were quite weighted down by the large dragon atop them. He made something of a cooing noise at her movement. The truth was, Sachiko only really knew of anything in Veria because of rumors she heard. Since there weren't very many disasters around at this time -- save for... whispers of aliens? Sachiko didn't pay it all much mind; she'd seen weirder -- she didn't really hear much about rangers.
She wasn't about to give Rikkan the relief of knowing that, though. Once he asked about her origins, she hummed faintly and shrugged again, which caused a bit more of a high-pitched noise from the Noivern this time. "Let's go with tourist. One that doesn't particularly plan on leaving..." Not a choice, exactly, but the few times she'd told someone that she came from another world, she'd gotten weird looks. "What was Orre like?"

Her shrug seemed to indicate agreement, at least partially. The Noivern appeared to be a weighty burden on her, both literally and figuratively. Sachiko shrugged once again when inquired as to whether she was native to Veria, which seemed an odd topic to be uncertain of. Her response seemd to shed a little light on it, though. A tourist with no plans to leave? Sounds like an extended vacation or moving in, and an easy way to imply such. Either way, her next question immediately followed, a rather interesting one.
"Orre?" Orre certainly had been long way away for him. His home, he hadn't returned to it in a few years, although Alice kept him up to date on goings on in Orre. "Haven't been back in some time, League keeps moving me around, but I've got a friend who keeps in touch. Orre's my home, though s'not where I was born or grew up. Most of it's desert, the Northwestern sector is forested though. Used to have a lot of issues with crime up until I guess around five or six or so year back. League expanded efforts in the region, stabilized the place, recruited me to serve as a Ranger. S'also where I met Azria here, and her brother, Rune."
For a moment he chuckled and lowered his head, shaking it for a second before meeting Sachiko's gaze once again, giving Azria a pat on the head. "Without those two, I probably wouldn't have taken on the job. How about you? Where are you from if you aren't from here?" Made by Maelys

@rikkan WORD 171 NOTES: NOTES | Punishment Must Suit The Crime ✘ I'm wasting all your precious time The redhead listened to his explanation of Orre. Sounded a bit more like what she remembered of her own home than this place. She just gazed at the Pokemon he spoke about meeting back in Orre. Would be nice to have something from home... but then again, she wouldn't even remember them, probably.
Then her thoughts were broken by his question. "Um... No place you've ever heard of, I'm sure. Plus I moved around a lot... so it's almost hard to remember exactly where I'm from," she explained with a wave of her hand to brush it off. With a slight snicker, she shifted a little and the dragon let out a soft sigh of a groan, as if he were a dog trying to sleep on her as she moved. "I grew up in a desert, though. Family were nomads before striking up an alliance with a vi--er, town that was built." Right... places weren't called "villages" here. Not unless they were spectacularly small and not at all developed... |
