Mission name: The Tree of Life Participants: Lucien Benoit Catching?: No Spawning: 4 prompts with struggles getting to the tree at the center, word count based. Each will come with a Pokemon fully evolved full move set that must be defeated as well as a word prompt that details some physical / mental struggle he must undertake as well. These can be climbing over forest logs, getting across pools and rivers, but also be like mentally distorting things such as the deafening silence around him. Mission details: Lucien has put off going to ‘see Xerneas’ for over a year now, and after a particular person’s prompting, he can no longer put it off. He wanders into the Wasteland, fighting down different struggles in order to get to the center. Once there, he pays his respects to the great life giver. Reward: Lucien feels more connected to things via Aura, but all of its more ‘inspired’ by the situation and is all for IC fluffles. Aside from that, 10 move techs would be appreciated for it as a testament to Luci’s connection with his Pokemon through it.
He really should have done this last year. Every step of the way towards the border between Alterna and the Wasteland beat this mantra into Lucien. He should have gone there a couple days after learning what had happened. He knew that. He knew that but here he was a year later, almost around the same time he’d come to Veria, heading to the place where his life had changed without him even being there.
He could see it before he felt the crunch of dead grass underfoot. The mass of nothingness that was the Wastland was a void for his aura vision. It tightened in his stomach, and some part of him wanted to turn and leave even right then, but he’d already made this promise to himself— and to the legendary beast that had saved Elena… and Thomas. He wanted to pay respects, even if it turned him around, got him beat up and lost and confused in the process. He needed to, for its sake and his own.
A slow breath drew into him, and he stopped at the line between what was alive and what wasn’t. A flick of the wrist, and a Pokeball burst forth. Alamea was quick to rest on his shoulder, leaning against him gently and murmuring softly. Lucien smiled a little weakly and nodded. “Ah may need yer help, Mea,” he chuckled. She already knew, however, and gave a small coo in response. Fishing out another Pokeball, he released Rio right beside him. “Ya readeh ta go, bud?” The Lucario gave a small nod as well. He understood Lucien’s intent and feelings well enough now that yes, yes of course he wanted to come with and support his friend. “Right, les’ go then.” And with that, they crunched into the Wasteland.

A SIGN OF LIFE
Venturing deep into the wastelands reveals just what a horrific sight it is. The land is grey out to the horizon, and soon enough the green behind you all but dissapears. Some trees seem to still have leaves, but they're dry, seeming as though they remain in place simply because the stems weren't allowed to wither, life drained from them in an instance, perfectly preserved due to the sheer lack of life to destroy and eat away at them in their dead state.
The state of sheer lifelessness could weigh heavy on your mind, especially when you know the person who did all this holds little to no regret. Heck. He lives right next to it with a sense of pride.
In time, a sign of hope may emerge...a single tree in the distance...wait what is a palm tree doing in Alterna?

The subtle crunch underfoot was not foreign to him now. He’d walked through this alongside Niso before. However, it seemed louder to him now, as if every step echoed over and over again. His aura sight, his mind’s eye, was awake and alive, aware of Alamea’s cool assurance and Rio’s careful confidence. However, as he stretched his sight, his mind out beyond that, the normal bright colors that filled his vision were for not. Everything here was dark, dead, done.
A slow, shaky breath drew in and out of Lucien. He’d walk for maybe ten minutes, but it felt like longer. Everything was the same around them. The grass broke apart underfoot. The small branches and twigs would come apart too easily around him. The worst of it, though, was the skeletons. Pokemon whose lives were sacrificed to fuel Niso Konto now lay as bones on the land. The violent beasts that had rolled in, the wilder Pokemon who had moved in, must have picked them clean— or maybe worse, they were left to decompose of their own accord and returned to the land without new life starting in its place. A chill went through Lucien as he became a bit too aware of how unnatural it all felt.
Before Lucien realized it, Rio grabbed his hand, causing him to stop walking mid-step. Mmmm? Looking back and then forward again, his eyes grew large on seeing the huge palm tree coming at them. Alamea had shifted a little as well springing down from his shoulder, her tiny form incomprehensible to the sheer size of the dragon before them. The beast roared loud and clear, daring anyone to come any closer before using a Curse to strengthen itself.
Lucien winced but was ready to carry out orders. It had been a while since he’d battled one of these, but he already knew their signature weaknesses. “Alamea, Poison Jab, Rio Laser Focus then Dragon Pulse.” Alamea twirled speedily around the Exeggutor avoiding a fierce Dragon Hammer as it came barreling down to them. The sheer length of the creature had Lucien jumping sideways in turn to avoid being hit with recoil. Spinning and swaying, the Lurantis sunk a sharp barb of poison into her opponent.
Meanwhile, the Lucario was focusing deep inside, readying himself to hit with a critical potency. Even as the Exeggutor righted itself and began to shoot seeds in multiple directions, he was able to take the attacks steady and focus. “Mea!” Right, he needed to make sure he wouldn’t hit her as well. Rio focused even more before summing up the power that was his Dragon Pulse. The Lurantis, meanwhile, skirted back around to Luci right before the beam went off, side swiping the Exeggutor with more than enough critical focus to knock it straight to the ground fainted.
A cold silence fell right after, and Lucien was vaguely aware that yes, in fact, he had won, and yet… The chill in the air kept him from celebrating. A small shake of head was given, and he’d check over his Pokemon before anything else. Once they were assuredly fine, he’d leave the beast where it lay and continue on through the would-be woods. They were probably going to face many more of these before they were done. Drawing up his focus again, Lucien forced himself to stretch out his mind and search the area for any signs of life.

WATCH YOUR FOOTINGVenturing deeper into the Wasteland, you find that the area is littered with fallen debris, mainly fallen trees that were the result of a feral Pokemon's rampage through the area. If one is not careful, a slip could result in an injury, such as a sprained ankle. In the middle of it, a lone Pokemon seems to be keeping its balance just fine. 550 WORDS! |

Onward, they went, through the void that was the forest. Occasionally stray strands of aura would catch Lucien’s vision, causing him to stop and look closely, only to realize that it was a subtle marking left by some wild Pokemon now inhabiting the area. Nothing in the environment itself aside from them was actually alive. Why did he bother getting his hopes up a couple of times in rapid succession? This was starting to foul his mood faster than he was ready to accept. A small, weak inhale-exhale would force him to go onwards again thereafter.
Alamea did her best to be supportive. Though she could not see the flames of life that Lucien and Rio could, she was mostly aware that everything in the area was pretty much dead. If Lucien’s trudging steps or the broken bark weren’t enough for her own senses, her heightened Grass type ones made it more obvious. Occasionally she’d lift a long kimono arm and pat Lucien’s hair. He’d glance sideways, flash a weak smile, give a nod, but look forward again. Always forward.
Rio was much less affected. Though the void that was the auraless zone was unnerving, he had no trauma attached to it. Sure, he had met Elena at least once, but he had no deep emotional attachment in the way Lucien did, and couldn’t bring himself to. Instead, a sense of curiosity was ever present instead, pulsing through him and drawing him onwards. It was his heightened, powerful aura senses that caught the tiniest sense of something more in the distance. What it was, he knew not yet.
Eventually they would come across the mesh of fallen trees and broken woods. Lucien himself would come to a stop before his Lucario did, his eyes raising and flowing up over the line of sight. He could see something in there, a densely packed flame swirling and spinning about, but while he could assume it was a Pokemon, he had no assurance of what it was. They needed to be careful— both because of the trees but and also whatever it was that lay in there.
Right. This would probably be a little easier than Viola’s garden picking, at least. Drawing up some aura around himself, Lucien hardened it around his hands and wrists and slowly started to climb up over the first log. What he would find, however, was that bark that had at one time made the bark rough was now falling away like sand at his single touch. Oh— that was. Lucien tried very hard not to frown too much at that, assuring himself it made it easier in the long run.
Rio, meanwhile, was having a much easier time of it. His species was well adapted to many things, and climbing up and over stuff was no exception. Fast, fluid, agile, he was up over the first log and already climbing up the second and third one. As confident or cocky as he probably should have been about outpacing his master so easily, however, Rio was more…. Focused, searching, assuring himself that he could combat whatever was in the way once it showed itself.
A cry reverberated in the air causing all three to tense right then. There it was balancing on one log, the creature who’d determined this area was his. A Quick Attack came at Rio, but the damage was brief, a fleeting wound, as the Lucario formed a Bone Rush and went swiping at him in turn. He’d return that challenge with double.
Unfortunately, the logs began to slip and sway, and Lucien was quickly falling here and there was he struggled to stay up. One log came flying up, and it was Alamea who’d finally had enough, leapt forth, and slashed it apart with a menacing X-Scissor. She would twirl out a Petal Blizzard that cut into the logs and eventually came ramming into the spinning top Pokemon as well. The Hitmontop nearly lost balance, and in that moment, Rio delivered the final blow. Aura Sphere may not have had a Type advantage, but it was enough to knock the already unstable Hitmontop on his feet and then backwards yet again.
As things began to settle again, Lucien took a slow breath and started to climb up through the logs again. There, out now.

Just Around the Riverbend Up ahead there appears to be what used to be a large river that must be crossed in order to continue further into the wasteland. The water level has receded drastically, making it difficult to navigate the steep banks and sharp rocks that make up the bottom. That's not all that's evident in the river however, skeletons or husks of what might have been wildlife before the event are obvious as well. On top of one of these rocks rests a Pokemon that seems to be blending in with the surroundings, claiming what little water remains as her own. 600 Words! |

They’d only been walking for another couple of minutes before a sharp feeling hit Lucien. His body slumped. Alamea and Rio jerked to attention. The Lurantis jumped down right as her boy took a knee. A paw raised up to set itself on his trainer’s shoulder. Lucien hunched on the ground, one hand over his stomach and the other over his mouth. His breathing shook for a while. Nausea came and went. The pounding in his head would not immediately subside, however.
I’ve used too much aura… Expelling it while extending his sight. Using it to reinforce his hands as he climbed over. All of these relatively minor things were wasting away at his aura reservoirs, and that mixed with everything else was… making him sick, huh? “Jus’… need ta rest fer a while…” he finally spoke. Rio looked at Alamea. The latter gave a small nod, and together they helped ease him away from the open and over to a tree. He could rest there for a while, hopefully.
He rested for a while, all ‘three’ of his eyes closed for a while. Rio stood guard, and while Alamea stayed close and ‘tended’ to him in her own way. Lucien, meanwhile, was considering why he was here. What he was hoping to accomplish by coming all the way out here. If all he was going to see was death in every direction, if all he would see was the trace amounts of havoc and destruction left by violent Pokemon, why was he here? Why was he doing this? What did he want from this? To see Xerneas and pay respects… Yeah, that was what he had told himself. That was what Niso had suggested to him in his round about way. But… was that why he was out here? Was that why he was doing this?
No, huh? No this… wasn’t so much about Niso. This wasn’t so much about Lucien. This was… seeing the good in the forest. Trying to find it when everything was dead. Xerneas was the source of life, wasn’t it? Of course, he had to find it, right? Of course, … he would see it, right? What if it’s dead too…. Lucien gulped. He didn’t… want to consider that. He didn’t want to know that. He didn’t… want to feel that kind of loss. But here he was. Here he was walking or who knows how long now. He had to, right? He just had to keep going. He had to see it for his own eyes, at the end of the day.
Sigh, what a shit ton of work.
A weird, echoed laugh escaped from Lucien as a warm feeling came and went from him. Man, right? Like, what the hell even. Why couldn’t he just lay on a beach all the damn time and be fine that way? Why did he have to do this to himself? Fucking hell… He was laughing now, much to the confusion and alarm of his Pokemon. “Ah’m fine, ‘m fine,” he assured slowly, tiredly. He’d wait a little longer before getting up again, still. He had some energy back now at least, and they had to keep going, right? Right. Alamea and Rio remained worried but.. there wasn’t as much they could do for him now, so they just continued onwards. They’d stay by his side at least.
Finally coming to the large riverbed, the party would stop again by Rio’s hand gesture. Both Alamea and Lucien stopped, their gaze directing downwards to review the creature that was there. Ah man, those things could be mean. He didn’t…. want even Rio to be hit by one unexpected attack. They needed to be careful about this and— A hand clasped upon the Z-charm that was at his wrist. He had never thought to use it until recently. It had always been… an if rather than a when, and even as he’d punched the daylights out of Niso Konto, he hadn’t considered using it… but now.
Lucien took in a breath. “Le’s do this,” he stated drawing up as much focus as he could to perform the dance correctly. On seeing what he was doing, Rio followed the motions before seemingly overwhelmed by the rush of Fighting power. Lunging off the side of the hill, he went flying down and slammed the Walrein with an All-Out Pummeling that immediately knocked her unconscious. Lucien exhaled a little before slowly starting to climb down as well. They needed to get across this riverbed after all.
Alamea made sure Lucien was careful as he made his way down and even more so as he made his way up the riverbed again. After that, however, everything was good enough. Rio followed right after feeling a little too energized not to be hopping up and down excitedly. Heh, if only Lucien himself had that kind of energy, damn.

After a long, exhausting journey, the tree is within sight and is still very much alive. With Lucien's aura sight, he will see the life radiating from the source. After so much death and destruction, the presence of life for the first time in the wasteland is overwhelming. Nearby, hidden in the shadows and covered in ashes along with fallen leaves from the tree, is a Pokemon that is the self-designated caretaker. He has fought valiantly protecting the tree from those that would seek to harm it and won't let Lucien get close without a fight. 700 Words! |

They continued walking, occasionally passing and managing to avoid some of the less observant vicious Pokemon that were roaming the area. Thanks to Rio’s heightened senses, they were able to hide and duck through the rest of the encounters. Lucien took the time to recover as much as he could. He needed to— that and work up enough determination. They were going to see the tree, after all.
Then, something happened. Rio stopped walking and seized Lucien’s hand again, causing him to freeze as well. Yellow eyes flashed around but did not spot a Pokemon or creature in the distance. If he squinted, he caught sight of something, but without his Aura Sight on, it was hard to tell what it was. Even Alamea seemed to mumble at something, however, and it was enough to draw his interest. A slow breath drew into Lucien before he opened his inner eye and extended his ‘sight’ range around him.
Woosh— the rush of bright color, the pulse of warm life, the sensation that he was no longer in the perpetual graveyard was so alarming to his senses, that he nearly took a step back. Yellow eyes bounced from the ground to the trees and finally to Rio again. “Dis’s…” Lucien didn’t have to finish. His partner already knew what he meant, had been the one point it out even. Yes, they were both experiencing the exact same thing in this case. This powerful, living aura.
The Lucario made a low noise. As much as he wanted to go further, he hesitated. This was the first sense of life that he had truly encountered since coming here. Had he not known better, he would have assumed they had bisected the area and come out on the other side. But no, in this case… it was from a single source, he could feel it. Xerneas was close.
Lucien’s hand clasped Rio’s paw a little tighter, and he started to walk again tugging him into the area. The rush of life, steady growth, and normalcy could mean only one thing to him. They were here, at the Xerneas tree. A slow breath drew into Lucien as he finally ‘saw’ it, the source of the life that persisted in this small ring within the desert. The way its aura moved already had his eyes tearing up, and something in his stomach tightened. An… apology? Wanted to slip from his lips, but he had no idea why, no concept as to what he was feeling let alone seeing.
It was more beautiful than he could have imagined.
“Ruf.” Rio had never actually ‘barked’ before, and it jolted in Lucien, causing him to take several steps sideways. Huh? What was? Alamea had tensed too, but he wouldn’t ‘see’ it until the creature came around.
“Blaziken?” He knew well enough that there were many beasts in the Wastelands, but for whatever reason the thought that a traditional starter was here did not actually come to mind until just now. Oh fuck— He didn’t like that judgmental look he was getting, and as much as he probably should have said something or ordered an attack or thrown out a Pokeball, he found himself backing up instead. “S-s-sorry?!” What was he sorry for? Why was he not doing something more?
The Blaziken stared hard at the intruders into ‘his’ domain. This place was sacred now, and he would not let intruders in close. However, the fact that this human was apologizing and backing up did strike him as odd. That and… the Lucario with him. Those were creatures of Aura, were they not? Had it come sensing the power of the tree? Or— His gaze raised, and he squinted hard at the trainer.
A small foot stomp echoed in the proverbial silence, and Lucien froze for a second. Slowly, he took a step forward again. “I’m— nawt here ta harm Xerneas er… anyone else,” he stated. “It… jus’ saved mah sister ‘n cuz… and…” His gaze flickered to the tree again before flowing back to the Blaziken. The Lucario never once let his gaze leave the tall fire chicken. In all of this, Alamea had started to hum softly, calmly.
Slowly, the Blaziken nodded. He believed the human at least to some degree. However, he would not let them come any closer without a test of strength. Those who were not powerful had no right to approach a king. The way his aura swayed spoke this better than his voice could have. Lucien slowly nodded in understanding. They just needed to show strength. Well, well they knew how to do that, huh? The strongest move they had. “Rio,” Lucien called. The Lucario was already in synch, already ready.
They could do this.
A light gleamed from the Keystone that Lucien carried and shimmered around the Lucario. The latter burst into light and grew in form, taking that of a Mega right after. They could do this. They could do this. “Bone Rush!” The Lucario called out loudly kicking up a bone and lunging forward. The Blaziken Bounced upwards, and the battle began.
Click, kick, swish, swash, attack after attack, the two Fighting masters fought. Even with a Type disadvantage, the Lucario would not give up. Even with this show of strength, the Blaziken was having too much fun. They clashed and attacked, avoiding the tree at each turn of events. Lucien, meanwhile, felt it all as a rush through Rio. Their harmony was strong, and his assurance fueled Rio’s. They could do this. They could definitely do this.
More than several minutes had passed, and now both Pokemon were panting, exhausted. Neither had fallen yet, but they had both given it their all. Slowly the Blaziken righted himself again and gave a small nod. Alright. He had seen and accepted their resolve. Yes, they could come sit down below the tree, rest for a while.
Both Lucien and Rio nodded. As the latter dissolved back into his regular form, they quickly came back together, hugging tight. Alamea hugged both of them as best she could. Thereafter, Lucien approached the sacred tree.
Thud, thud, thud, thud. Lucien didn’t even realize it was all ringing in his ears until he got close enough. Stepping forward, however, he rested his forehead against the X marking the tree. Quietly, yet with assurance, he started speaking the words that needed to be said.
