Talk about digging through family archives.. Although he wasn't even sure this old mine had belonged to his family, it still woke something in him, whether good or bad he wasn't sure yet. Running his palm across the roughly hewn walls of cold stone, Nathan exhaled the breath he just now realized he'd held after he started reminiscing.
"Well.. No use dwelling on it down here of all places." the young man reminding himself, lightly slapping a palm to his forehead, shaking it at his own melancholy.
Hefting a rather heavy duffel bag off of his shoulders, opening and digging through it until he'd withdrawn the climbers pick, hammer and piton. "This'll work, right? Right, of course it will, they're practically the same!" he told himself as he got to work with the tools on the rough surfaces of rock, dirt and earth that surrounded him.
He'd heard others mention that sometimes, people got lucky down here with precious stones or useful materials, and such a rumour, for a rumour was all it was to him, was enough for Nathan to start diggin'.

The hoard grows!

As the deep blue stone dislodged itself from deep within its rocky cradle and plopped onto the duffel below, Nathan wiped the sweat from his brow with a triumphant grin on his face. Kneeling down to take a breather, he picked up the crystal, twisting and turning it, letting its facets catch and play with the light.
"Heh, not too bad!" he pocketed the stone, giving it a reasurring pat before he sat back on his rear with a slight huff. "This'll take too long if I keep doing like this though.. Maybe.. Chomps could help." he muttered to himself, reaching for the pokeball containing said 'mon.
A bright flash and an almost comical 'plop, his Trapinch materialized from within its confines, immediately stretching its jaw and snapping it for a few seconds with loud 'clacks' before turning to face her trainer and immediately snapping at his shoes. "Hey! These aren't yours!"
Despite his best effort it took a few seconds for the little 'mon to stop her attempts. "Yeah alright, its my bad for not bringing along your chew toy. But! What'd you say about diggin' through some rock with me? We might even find you another chew toy!?"
Initially uncertain, at the mention of something new to chew on, Chomps turned about and started to chew straight into the rock face, her powerful jaws cracking and crunching through the solid rock, making better progress than he'd done for the last few hours.

Uttering a long, drawn-out sigh, Nathan wiped further sweat from his brow, leaning his head back and uttering a groan. "Why is this so difficult! you'd think diggin' through hard rock would be easier, don't you agree, Chomps?"
Crunch.. The sturdy little pokemon looked up with a happy grunt, having dug a much bigger and deeper scar into the walls of the cave.
"I suppose that chomper helps, doesn't it?" he shook his head with a grin, about to get back to it when Chomps withdrew from her hole, a glint of something golden in her massive jaw catching Nathan's eye. "Oh, hey hey hey, Chomps, c'mere you, can I see what you have there, hmm?" he dropped his tools near instantaneously, dropping into a squat, hands held out to his now apprehensive Trapinch.
"Now Chomps, don't be like that, its just rock, see?" he gathered a fist full of his own debris to show her. "Now what do you say you give it to me?" After another few failed attempts, Nathan uttered another sigh and sat down onto his rear. "..Alright, I suppose you want something else to chew on, hm?" he shot his own shoes a woeful glance.
"..Well, certainly not against it, I'll just get new ones.. Alright, here you go, you insufferable little devil you." he said, reaching over and rubbing the Trapinch's face affectionately before untying and removing a shoe, holding it out like an exchange, waiting for Chomps to drop the (big) nugget, literally.
One shoe exchange later, Nathan was back at it, though he'd decided to work in Chomp's already dug hole, his excitable little pokemon taking a break from digging by chowing down on his shoe.

"One shoe down, one rock up"

Nearing two or three hours down in the abandoned mines, Nathan's patience was soon running out, having only gathered to his name two precious stones.. crystals? They were precious, that's all he knew!
About to take a break, just 'chiseling' at the walls of the hole Chomps had 'chomped' for him earlier. "You know Chomps, we should definitely try somewhere else next time, there doesn't seem to be anything left he-" mid-stroke with the hammer, the dull shine of a crystal caught his eye, even in the dimmer light of the hole.
"Well, spoke too soon there!" he immediately started to work at the edges of the crystal, even as Chomps started to nib at his other remaining shoe. "Hey! No no you, once we're done you get to have your chew toy, yeah? You already got one shoe!"
After a long fight with both his chew-happy Trapinch and the rocky prison of the crystal he now had in his palm, Nathan sat back, two shoes down, not sure whether to feel triumphant or defeated about the whole thing.
He idly let the brown, almost amber crystal roll around on his palm for a second before he opened a pocket on his duffel, depositing it in there with the other treasures he'd managed to dig out so far.
"One more?" he looked at his little Chomps, who now sat triumphantly surrounded by two chewed up, expensive pair of hiking shoes. With a happy clack of her jaws, she seemed to agree.
"Alright, but you stay off my socks, or feet for that matter!" he pointed at her with a brief grin and shake of his head, before he got back to working around the edges of the hole, tired of dealing with the denser surfaces further in.

Calling it a day

As another, large chunk of a nugget dropped almost straight into his lap, Nathan exclaimed excitedly and spared no time before picking it up and shining it with an elbow. "See, knew we'd get something before going home!" he showed the sizeable lump of gold to Chomps, who seemed disinterested in the object now that it was no longer her finding.
Instead the Trapinch picked up both of the new ruined shoes in her massive jaws, looking expectantly at Nathan while he packed his his bag with the equipment and the golden treasure.
"Alright, you can walk with me for a while, but after that I'll need those shoes back, and you're going back inside your ball, alright?"
A brief, muffled noise some might describe as a croak and a nod of her massive head told Nathan they'd reached an agreement.
"If my feet start bleeding, I'm not buying you another chew toy for a month." he muttered under his breath, hoisting his duffel's strap onto his shoulder and motioning for Chomps to follow him back out, into the light and back towards Faraday proper.
