Maria Nabella

Standing 5'9, Maria displays a soft frame that still shows some light traits of her more active years upon closer examination, though with her clothing habits and years of working more in the offices her old tight frame has waned a bit, leading to the softer figure she has now.

She tends to wear light makeup typically with the aim of making her face and expressions look softer, with light eye shadow if she wants to feel a bit more pretty. Her chocolate brown eyes hold a soft gaze more often than not, to the point she may seem half awake to some people, and just naturally caring in her gaze to others.

While small flashes / strips of skin are fine, her wardrobe will typically consist of items that mostly cover her body in some way. A mid thigh skirt would be accompanied by tights or long socks for example. Short sleeved outfits will come with detached sleeves or arm warmers, and so on.

She also carries half rimmed glasses for reading or dealing with small Pokemon, though her condition can fluctuate to the point she may not need them sometimes.

Maria is a soft and caring individual. Over the years she's had moments where she has been prone to mood swings or brief spouts of anger, but those are majorly under control in current years. While she can seem perhaps dreary or light headed to strangers, those who know here experience her love and kindness first hand and would find it hard to see her permanently softened expressions as anything else. She has an extreme, yet quiet love for people and Pokemon alike, and finds it almost uncomfortable if she is not holding one of the two close to her at any given time.

While she has what could be called an 'excuse' for her still existing fits of anger, Maria will always apologize profusely unless a particularly raw nerve has been hit. If the anger felt unjustified, or only mildly justified, she will bow her head and beg forgiveness. If the anger came about from a true spark against one of her core beliefs, or insults to a person she loves, she will quietly hold a sense of spite and a grudge for some time afterwards, though would never let it actively be a detriment to her work or life.

Maria can get mildly nostalgic or lonely if she's been alone in the offices for a while. Pokemon can be great company, but it's known around the offices that it's good to just poke your head in if you poke by her work space, both because it really helps her feel relevant still (despite 'knowing' she is) and also because she's bound to ask you in to share a cup of tea and some snacks if you have the time.

Maria also has a strong maternal instinct for those she feels close to. Generally this is most Pokemon she will work with, but in terms of humans, other Rangers around the offices can find her packing them lunches if she feels they havn't been eating right, or doting on them after a rough mission tackling a wildfire or the like.

While majorly disinterested in sex, she is very comfortable flirting with others who initiate it, but will always try and be sure to warn them she isn't looking for anything serious, and more just sees it as something playful that lightens her mood. To a point, it also helps her feel like she isn't just another 'background character' in life, as it shows people are actively interested in her, playfully or seriously, even if she can't return the sentiment actively.

Growing up in Alterna Maria worked with her parents managing a Pokemon ranch / breeding business. This work with her family instilling in her a love for Pokemon from an early age, as she would often play with and help raise the freshly hatched Miltanks and Farfetched, or care for the parents of eggs trainers would one day pick up, both leading up to the egg, and especially for the time after the egg was passed on to the trainer.

Despite the clear good she was doing with her parents, the young Maria wanted to do more, she wanted to do something a little more direct that could help Pokemon out in the wild and in the hands of trainer's alike. While her goals were perhaps a little unfocused at such a young age, a passing recruitment drive for the rangers in Alterna helped her focus them, and she aimed to join the Rangers the moment she was sure she was ready.

Even through her ranger training the developing teen continued to work with her parents on their ranch, growing strong and skilled in caring for Pokemon, helping them maintain their health, and learning the complexities of Pokemon. What could heal one Pokemon could hurt another, and on top of her Ranger training, she was looking to be a very promising recruit when she finally joined the force.

Looking to be in the field whenever she could, with her Miltank Tunk-Tunk she helped take on any natural disasters and rampaging Pokemon she could to do as much good as she could. Her sense of worth at the time related to how much she was doing, and any time she was doing paperwork, ordering equipment, or generally not being active in the field, she felt she was wasting time...

A few years into her service, she experienced what, to her belief, was a late growth spurt. It had been somewhat annoying buying new uniforms and items for her wardrobe, but at the time she'd thought nothing of it. It was only when she began developing repeated cases of intensifying headaches that she realized something may be up, and even then had no idea it may be in relation to her late spurt of growth, which, until the doctors told her otherwise, she'd still been associating with her diet or some such.

When she finally got the news after several tests and a short waiting period, it felt like a punch to the gut. Apparently her late growth, and other symptoms she'd just thought had been natural to her in some way, had been down to a tumor pressing against her pituatary gland. She was handed some options, and told the risks of delaying treatment but...worried an operation may steal her of her ability to work, she took a risk for a few months and hoped it would stop developing. She could deal with the side effects that existed, and medication could help her headaches...she just didn't want to stop working, to be useless helping Pokemon.

Almost half a year later however, it was clear she had no other choice. With some guidance from close colleagues she put herself under the knife, and scheduled operations and time off to remove the tumor. She was nervous even waiting for the operation, and the fact she had to be awake for it didn't help her in the slightest, but those details are best kept to herself.

What can be said is how she found herself awaking. She'd recalled being panicked, and the surgeons around her seeming to have some complication before blacking out. Not the best thing to do during brain surgery apparently...all the same she was informed there had been complications, and while the tumor had been removed, there may be remaining side effects. She'd find in time there were, but at the very least it seemed they were far more manageable. In the moment however, knowing she'd been there, just sat there, with a chance of her just...poof.

She didn't return to work for quite some time, even beyond the allotted recovery period.

When she finally returned it was clear to the rest of the HQ that she wasn't the same woman that would rush into firey situations with her Pokemon and drag Pokemon back out with her. That person was perhaps still there, but a little shaken. Talking to her superiors, using her work with her ranch owning family to justify it, she asked for a transfer to a quieter department. Pokemon rehabilitation, where she could help heal and prepare Pokemon to be re-released into the wild, or care for Pokemon till they could be introduced to a herd or reunited with family and trainers. Given her pre-op behvaiour it was a big shift, but she realized two things during her operation. Primarily she was shaken, she knew she could die at any time and...she didn't want to tempt fate like the old her would. Her life was to be used for helping Pokemon and people, but that didn't mean she should waste it...and also...

The Doctors showed her she didn't need to be a brash young child to save or even change someone's life. In fact even the nurses who had helped her recover were part of her inspiration to shift careers.

Over time there was a...learning curve. Dealing with scared, displaced Pokemon was much different from the ranch, and the lesser control over her emotions had meant that she'd yelled at a finnicky Pokemon on more than one occasion. Her colleagues were understanding however, and she learned, and she grew, calming considerably from her old self, primarily as a safeguard against her moments of anger and to help push them further down.

These days, her maternal instinct has been kicking in more and more, and where she used to rush into the field to help save and care for lives, she tries to make every effort she can to do that from the offices, guiding Pokemon back to health, and making sure her co-workers are in peak condition, emotionally and physically if she can. She still misses the girl she used to be sometimes, hoping she might have the nerve to go into danger if it's called of her, but for now, she's content with her place in the rangers.

Despite the major classification, Maria is not overly strong, but simply strong for her size and past experiences. She finds it surprisingly easy to pin small Pokemon that may be a little squirmy when she's trying to get them ready for a bath of a form of treatment they need (though most Pokemon could still escape her if they really try), and anyone she hugs or coddles will find her grasp comfortable, but also difficult to escape on the off chance it is uncomfortable to them for whatever reason. She can also handle heavy loads, typically useful when lending a hand to other rangers bringing in supplies or moving equipment.

Dexterity - Minor (1)
Skilled with her hands, Maria has a strong sense of where they are at all times, typically coming in useful when dealing with struggling Pokemon she is attempting to treat. She can also be good when treating other rangers, skilled in first aid and some advanced medical practices. Though typically more used to Pokemon, she can and is officially trained to stitch and treat human wounds.

- While mentioned in her history, Maria has suffered a brain tumor pressing primarily on her pituitary gland. While removed, the effects of the pressure still remain, though thankfully there are no signs of the tumor returning several years later. Persisting side effects related to the operation include-

• Headaches - Typically nothing persistent, just brief flashes here or there, sometimes several times a day, sometimes days apart.
  
• Difficulty controlling anger - While normally docile, her anger can be sudden and intense with the wrong provocation. This was far more frequent recently after her operation, lately her anger is more defensive in nature to herself and those around her.
• Fluxuating Vision - While never 'blind', her vision can fluxuate between fairly clear to somewhat blurred. She carries glasses to counter this, and it never gets so bad she can't recognize someone she knows without her glasses, but she needs them to complete paperwork, or work with Pokemon, especially the smaller ones.
  
• Pituatary gland effects - she continues to have a decreased interest in sexual activities, Amorrhea, infertility, and a more active maternal instinct, since her operation.
