The cold winter air rolling in from the ocean didn't do much to deter shaun from his work. A thermal layer under his clothes, a puffy coat, and a knitted cap was all he needed to-oh. Gloves. He needed gloves. That last bit of scrap from his latest haul was fucking freezing. "Uuuugh...bloomin hate winter...Ocean gets fuckin' ice chunks, beers aren't as refreshing, and all this scrap is making me freeze my arse off..." Not to mention the pain of scuba diving. A wet-suit could only lock in so much heat before he was risking some physical damage.
"I really need to find some fresh work...wonder if Jim needs a bouncer tonight..." Whatever the case he'd have to deal with that after unloading the latest scrap haul. Pulling his boat up to the docks, the older looking ship amongst the newer ones certainly stood out, but Shaun was working on saving for a few upgrades. For now he'd managed to slip a few living essentials below deck and that was all that he needed. Easing some of the latest haul out onto the dock to sell off later, keeping some of the nice chunks he thought he could make something out of. Swooping in from the edge of the dock was a small wingull that landed to perch on the edge of Shaun's boat, the scrapper giving the small bird a cheeky smirk and ruffling it's feathers.
"Miss me Ruck?~"

A cute kid in a big and fluffy winter coat over a cute dress and thick colorful leggings toddled along towards the boats. The amount of money jangling about in her classic Skitty backpack helped her decide which to approach first. No need for "Eeny, meeny, miny, moe", when you lived on a budget and a clear option presented itself. She strode up as fast as her little legs could take her, working up a sweat that made her feel like shivering. Bodies just couldn't decide. Her heavy breathing made all kinds of steam that obscured her face for a moment, her hands on her knees. She... was a little out of shape. She had always looked like a pampered child. While she caught her breath in front of the boat a minute, she had to recognize that she was getting amazing readings from her ghost detector. She had a feeling she would, even if she had been starting to worry about its ability. Tonight was the culmination of years of hard work. One of her white whales.Still catching her breath, she glanced up and blushed a bit. She felt a little bad for being surprised that the owner of the boat was a woman. Not that she didn't look capable... she looked so tough. "H-Hey.. ma'am..." Her breathing catching up with her every moment, her small voice sounding so exasperated. "Do you think.. you could take me out... tonight?" She groaned and leaned over with one hand on her knees, the other holding out a map with enough scribbled on lines to show the general area she wanted to go to. "I really need to... pretty please..."S-She really need to run more... Shaun Underwood

Tossing out what looked to me an old periscope from a submarine. He'd actually found it months ago and forgot to unload it, or maybe he thought it'd make a nice piece of a project he was working on. Who could tell it was damn months ago, and screw diving this time of year. He'd freeze his ass off. He was just about to head back under deck to see what else he was missing so he didn't have to make another unload trip for a while, when the young looking girl caught his attention, backing up to the edge of the boat and narrowing his eyes, wondering what such a little kid was so far out on the docks.
"That's sir to you kid." His voice was just faintly rough though more from habit than actually being pissed off, though the cold weather wasn't helping on that front really. Resting a boot on the edge of his boat, his eyes only narrowed further at her choice of words. "Er...look I dunno what people have told you but I don't exactly go for the young...ones...." His voice dipped off as he took scribbled on map, the lightbulb taking a moment to warm up before the idea clicked. "Oh! Take you out to sea! Ah fuck, sorry kid I thought someone was getting you to mess with me..."
He hadn't been to the marked area all that much but it didn't seem to dangerous from what little he recalled. Hooking over the edge of his boat he rested his feet in the footholds that acted as a ladder up to the deck, sitting on the edge as he handed back the map with a curious look on his face. "I mean, I'm game for takin' ya little miss but I think ya might not like your odds with this boat..." In truth, though some parts of the boat looked like they were welded together, Shaun did a pretty good job of making sure the thing could fly, let alone float. "What has you wantin' to go all the way out there?"
Without realizing it his wingull had flown to rest on his knitted cap mid conversation, the small bird tucking in its wings and getting cozy while Shaun wasn't aware.

Harper managed to finally catch her breath, but immediately felt a little drained again by her.. his.. response?
S-Sir? W-Why does she want to be called Sir? Or... or... is she actually a boy? B-But he looks like he has... w-why does a boy grow them but...
She sighed, she had long since given up the pretense and even stopped bothering with training bras. What was she even training for anymore...
...
The young ones.
Poor Harper. She felt her shoulders sag for a moment. No boobs and no romance, he just knew how to rub it in didn't he? The cool winter breeze mixed with the cold breeze of the sea was nothing on this brutally cold reception. She second-guessed herself for a momnent.. this was surely a bad sign. An omen. She glanced around for a moment, almost expecting to see an Absol.
No no, this was important. Pull it together Harper.
"T-Thank you Sir, s-sorry..." She said, still intimidated by this rough and tough individual. She played with her hair a little and tried to not get too discouraged and tell her story. "Do you know about the Singing Lights?" It was a notable ghost story around here and a confirmed multiple sighting on the UPIN website. Every so often, strange glowing lights would appear off in the distance of Pahala. Whenever any fisherman got curious enough to sail out and find them, they would hear a haunting song and wake up the next morning on their boat.
"It's a ghost story but... I think it's real. Me and my Papa think we figured out where they are going to be this year and it's my chance to prove it." she said, gesturing to her map again. She had all kinds of theories about it, and she was excited to put the case to bed.
She glanced at the boat a bit again, noticing some of the worse bits again. To be honest though she didn't really know what she was looking for. She made what passed for a haughty look on her childish mug, and crossed her arms over her chest. "I mean, is it able to or not? I'm willing to pay and junk." This guy(?) sure didn't seem confident in his boat.
She waited for his reply, trying her hardest to be polite and maintain eye contact like Papa taught her, but the bird on his head was distracting her.

Ruck making himself known with a brief ruffle of his feathers to get cozy, Shaun's eyes dipped up with a light scoffing laugh as he reached up to give the bird a light scratch behind one of it's wings. He was still paying full attention to the little kid of course, especially when it mentioned the singing lights. They'd been a ghost story in Pahalla for a good few years to his memory, maybe even more...heck he was pretty sure he'd seen them on the odd fishing trip, but he was usually so busy with his dad's job that it wouldn't have been good to change course without making sure he had a good enough haul to bring home...he'd even seen it once since he left his Dad's business, but the stories he'd heard as a kid shook him a little more than he'd be willing to admit infront of the little girl.
"Don't worry about the whole Ma'am thing kid." He began, wanting to make sure the little'n wasn't too upset by the whole thing. "I mean...its not like its a hard mistake to make is it?~" He gave a dramatic gesture up and down himself, not at all ashamed to admit he had a pretty feminine body for a guy. Heck he was prideful in it, but knowing it proooobably wasn't best to be showing off like that to a kid, he gave a light shake of his head and moved on, hands resting on his hips.
"But nah...I know what you're talkin' about. Seen them a few times myself but never had the chance to sail out and see them...heard from a few people who supposedly sailed into 'em too. Always had a chunk of missing memory from what I hear." He thought for a moment...the seas were rough this time of year but he did have a spare life jacket...he more worried about the kid having a crappy experience, but the idea of an easy pay day and getting to see these lights up close...
Stepping over the edge of the boat, he offered his hand down, strong firm and straight, ready to tug Harper up aboard. "Name's Shaun, and she'll definitely get us out there. 10 mun now, and 30 more when I bring you back. Sound fair?" He held a strong, confident grin, clearly sure in his ships odds of making the trip.

She smiled, her body language loosening up once she realized this person wasn't actually upset at her. Harper nodded. "I'm Harper! Pleased to meet you, sir! That's fine, really fine! I'll pay!"
She let herself be yoinked on the boat, with an audible "Upsie-daisy!" Just getting a bit flustered by how strong the grip was. And she thought Papa was strong, but this SIr made him look like nothing!
Harper looked excited to be on the boat, grinning wide at the scene in front of her. She quickly pulled out the 10 muns and waved it, attempting to hand it to him or stick it in the nearest pocket if he took more than a few seconds to YOINK it from her.
Once the messy business of payment was all done with, she"She looks pretty ship shape to me! Uh huh!" She giggled a bit, putting her hands on her hip and channeling her inner captain. Being on a boat felt fun. She wasn't scared at all.
Suddenly though she turned around and had a pained, look on her face. Her hand pressed against her heart as if gesturing that she was speaking form the heart, or truly because her words almost felt forced out of it. Achingly so, and the force of it caused her to speak gently. "I'm still real sorry. " she paused. "People always look at me and think they know me. I didn't mean to do it to you." To be honest, Harper's world still felt turned upside down. Where their boy bras? How come she didn't see more boys like Shaun?
Once that was over though, she gave him a big closed eyes grin and fluttered them open again. Once the tough talk was over she didn't feel the need to meet his eyes anymore. Her eyes didn't know where to stay. Pouring over every detail, and occasionally looking back at Shaun's bird friend. "Are we going now? How does it go? Do I do something?" She sounded kind of excited about the last thing... as if dreaming about being Shaun's special boat helper.

"Hah!" The laugh came out a little louder and heartier than expected, but Harper's choice of words just tickled him in a weird way, yanking them up onto the boat and making sure they had their feet set firmly in place before taking their hand away. "Upsie daisy indeed!" With the money offered up pretty sharply, Shaun didn't skip a beat to take it. Instinctively he woulda snatched it with a swipe, but he at least had the courtesy to take it into an open palm instead. "Pleasure doin' business with ya.~ Ruck? Give us a check would ya?"
Stashing the cash in his coat pocket, Shaun left the unloaded scrap on the dock knowing no one would touch his spot, and if anyone did they wouldn't get away with it too easily. Ruck took to the skies with a strong flap of his wings, flying out away from the dock to get a good view of how open the seas where and the state of the waves this morning. Shaun could feel his nose getting a bit snotty, but once they started moving he'd get himself warmed up quickly enough.
"Sorry?" It took him a second to realize what they were apologizing for, a light smirk on their lips...man she really did think she'd upset him huh? "Look kid its fine. I mean, I don't exactly 'present' do I?" He gestured up and down himself again, getting cheeky even and cupping the sides of his breasts for emphasis. "Not a hard mistake to make when you got these in your face eh? I mean I've seen guys with tits before but they usually got one hell of a gut to match."
Of course...he was being a bit crewd, hands dropping into the pockets of his coat and giving a light nod. "Look, I really do appreciate the apology...it means sumthin', just don't go worryin' over it either. You said sorry, you're good, and I'll correct you if ya slip up, but from the look on your face I doubt ya will so...we're good. Okay?"
He made sure Harper returned the smile he was sending her way, before stepping towards the small room on the middle of the deck, the clear windows showing it was clearly just the controls, a few steps up helping him look over the bow of the ship. "You wanna lend a hand?" He pointed towards a knotted rope on the docked side of the ship. "Let us loose. We'll be off before ya know it." Making sure Harper was confident in her ability to undo the ropes, Shaun tipped their head back, looking up to the sky. "Ruck!? We good!?" The bird called back in the distance, giving the signal the ocean was clear. If Harper managed to untie the boat, Shaun'd push forward on the throttle, and with some light throthing behind the ship as the propellers came to life, the two'd be off on their journey.
(If harper wasn't good with the rope I can add him doing them next post. Otherwise...)
"So, little lassy." He made sure the ship was on a good course before stepping down from the controls, hitting the short fall to the deck with a light thud from his boots, hands resting easily in his pockets as he offered Harper a smirk. "What brings a young miss like yourself out searchin for ghost stories?" He pulled his hands out, twiddling his fingers as he lurched forward in a creepy motion, shaking his voice to sound mockingly spooky. "Looking for that next great campfire tale? Or this some weird school project taken to the extreme?~"

When Shaun gestured to himself, Harper's face turned an impressive shade of red, the shyness scrunching up her small features in on themselves and giving her such a goofy looking expression.
"O-O-Okay..." She stammered out, nodding wildly. She was happy that things were alright, honestly. She still felt a bit bad, and still had no idea what she thought about the fact that he could have what she could not. Maybe honestly a it better? A little bit jealous... but if boys could have them maybe it wasn't so wierd that she couldn't? Maybe...
"Oh yes! Ropes! Alright!" To be honest, Harper went over and started making quite a few little strained sounds as she tried to this lump of stuff out. But just for a few seconds, because despite her mannerisms she really did have a bright mind. It's not like she was going to get tripped up by something like this.
... a little too much pride about it, she walked back over with a cheeky grin... and turned around only to fall on her feet with a loud squeal as the throttle picked up. "It's moving!"... yes, it was. Surprising how it felt! She had never been on a b-boat before. She wobbled to her feet and blushed, shivering as she looked and saw things past.
She ran over nearby him and watched the waves pass, grinning as the speed of being on a moving vehicle gave her an adrenaline rush. Outright giggling at the speed, only to glance back at him with that grin when he asked his question.
"Oh! I'm a paranormal investigator! Me and my Papa are! We know all about this stuff!" Her general tone of voice was... serious enough, but her general bubbly mood, goofy expression, and voice still made her sound a bit... more enthusiastic saying it. It was a cool thing to say, after all. But it wasn't the main thing she wanted to talk about, and she added. "Do you think this thing is faster than riding a Pokemon?! It moves so fast! What do you do on it?"

Shaun could hear the light struggle, turning their head away from the controls to make sure things were okay back there, but she seemed to managed to knot in due time, and with that excited little smile Shaun couldn't help but give one in turn, reaching over to ruffle the girl's hair when she tripped up on the way, covering his mouth to suppress a brief snicker before finally reaching over again to ruffle the young lass' hair. "Nice one, careful though, you might wanna hold onto something till we hit top speed. Sea can be a bit choppy this time of year." Tipping his head back, he called to the sky. "Ain't that right Ruck!?" The distant call of a wingull that had vanished into the clouds was returned, seeming chipper to be keeping lookout so high above.
Focusing on the controls for a moment till they got out away from the docks and into the open sea, Shaun was still careful to listen to the girl by his side, making sure to keep them in the control room for a moment while things were speeding up, but easing their arm away from behind Harper once things settled, checking they were on course and easing off the controls as they took a natural course. "Paranormal investigator huh? Sounds interesting...explains why you're coming out here at least. This for like a newspaper or someone pay you or...?" Shaun may have looked a bit quizical but he was more interested in what the girl was getting out of it. Having never left for a pokemon journey as a kid he didn't really have the sense of "just doing it for the adventure", so the option didn't occur to him. "Better yet, your dad know your coming here alone? Seems like a dangerous rumor to investigate solo..."
Of course he didn't wanna harp on at the young lass, she was paying, and her question elicited a light giggle, Shaun nodding to the right side of the boat. "Its faster than a lot of 'em, but some are even faster. Go out to the side, and hold your hand like this..." He gestured with a hand straight out, palm facing down. If Harper listened and did so, a sharpedo would leap out of the water and give her a high five with it's fin before diving back in to keep up with the ship.

She made a goofy face at him and smirked a little, "Now you tell me! After I almost already fell off!" She chuckled and stretched a bit, then stuck her hands in her pockets and looked around.
"Oh?" She sort of took a moment to process that Shaun had asked her a question, and stared out at sea for a bit. "I guess Papa just..." She shrugged a little... and then leaned over and watched the waves go by.
"He learned when he was a kid that the world could have all sorts of strange stuff in it. That there was lots of people telling the truth about things that seemed not so real. I spent my whole life around it... I don't know what else to do..." she sighed a bit, making a raspberry sound and sighing a bit.
A tear trickled on her cheek. She wasn't going to sob and break down like she had before, but it still hurt to think about. "Now that he's gone..."
She shook her head like a dog trying to shake themselves off after getting rained on, her mind running through the last bit Shaun said... what? She looked a bit nervous as she stuck her hand out over the edge and then..
"Eeep!" her eyes grew wide as a fishy friend came out and.. w-what? S-Shark?! She had caught a glimpse of its fearsome features, and looked at her hand for a few moments like she was afraid it might have gotten bitten off and she just wasn't aware of it yet. Wiggling her fingers proved to her eventually that they were all still attached however, and she giggled. She looked back up at him and gave him an award-winning smile, "That's so cool!"

Shaun paused a little as the girl's tone got so somber and melancholy...she worried he'd struck a nerve with her question, and the comment at the end well...it certainly didn't help. The lass seemed so excited about the trip and now Shaun felt he'd ruined her chipper mood in an instant. Sadly he didn't notice the tear on her cheek, but all the same, those words were strong enough to make him realize he may wanna choose what he says more carefully.
All the same Harper seemed eager to put her hand out like he'd asked her to, and the smile that it brought on eased his nerves somewhat as he let out a light chuckle, checking the boat was on it's course well enough before walking out to the edge of the boat to join her, pointing down to the dark blue streak in the water. "That's my sharpedo, he can outspeed us but we do a pretty good job keepin up!~"

Harper was still looking at her hand, still a bit unsure it truly was attached. This dumbfounded look on her face didn't go away and nearly became exaggerated as Shaun explained it's speed.
"Horror.." Harper whispered for a moment, her eyes growing wide... then shaking it. No no. It was also neat, wasn't it? Papa wouldn't want her judging anything so quickly. "I mean.. it was really cool though! But it seems kind of dangerous! I'm glad he's your friend, Shaun!" She smiled and looked back out, taking a deep breath.
A few moments passed and blew a raspberry...
"When I was a kid, Papa would tell me about a lot of stuff. One of the first stories I remember was about Lady Madeline. She's a Carvallean legend but I was told she's a sailor legend. A newlywed bride who lost her husband at sea, and became a ghost that haunted the waters..." The day was cold, and the fog seemed to be rolling in a little, which only added to the atmosphere...
"Carvalleans like to blame her for all the missing sailors that never turn up, although some people I interviewed said they thought it was just an excuse. A cover up. Everyone's got a different story..."
She held out her hand to her forehead and scanned the horizon... "But I figure... falling asleep to a ghostly song and waking up far away, special lights that seem ghostly, it almost sounds like her..." There was always something about this tale specifically that held her interest.
She grinned back at him. "Plus, I'm safe. I guess." She blushed a bit, only a little bit sad about that. "I... I probably shoulda warned you though..." She giggled and stuck out her tongue a little playfully.
"You ever hear about her?"

SNRRRRK. Shaun nearly keeled over laughing, to the point Harper might be worried he was gonna fall over the edge and into the water. Horror!? Had the little lass just used that word to refer to HIS Sharpedo!? Fuck, he wasn't even offended that just hit his funny bone hard. Holding up a finger to the young miss, he tried desperately to calm down his laughter, clapping his hands together. "Yeah I'll show you horror...Sharpie! Arf Arf!"
Despite making sounds like a see lion, the Sharpedo seemed to get that it was being called, leaping out of the water and lingering in the air long enough to meet Harper's eye. She'd leap up and down a few times, each time pulling a silly face or pulling off a dumb trick, like a sideways flip before diving back down, clapping her fins together,or even letting her tongue hang out, finally diving back down to pick up speed again and keep up with the boat, Shaun giving Harper's hair a playful ruffle with a proud smirk at his own fish. "Trust me lass, ain't nothin' horrific about 'er!~"
Spinning on his heels he'd rest against the edge of the boat, listening to Harper tell her little tale. It did sound interesting, though he was a little skeptical. It took him a second to realize why she was safe too, and he was about to say they were both safe if it was her, but as she opened her mouth to speak, she needed a second to think. "'Ang on...think since she's a spirit she'll recognize my male soul or some crap?...No offense to the lass, but I'm not the marryin' type..."
A weird chill ran down his spine to the point he turned around sharply...musta just been the ocean breeze...
Turning back to Harper, he was still a little skeptical, albeit faintly on edge now, still holding a strong smile all the same. "Ah stories can do that, change, shift, divide...may be able to hit two birds with one stone today, ya never know...I know my Pa's original crew liked to share ghost stories like that, but my own Pa never let me hear 'em. Didn't want me 'fraid of the ocean or nuttin' ya know?" His smile perked up a bit and he gave a light shrug. "Always saw me as his little girl, least till he let me captain my own boat...heh. Bet he regrets that a little..."
Ruffling above where his ponytail started, he tried to kill that line of thought, not wanting to bother the young miss with his soppy life story. "Ah he was a good bloke though, lookin' out for me in his own way. The crew probably spoke about her but I never heard it...so what you thinkin'?" He folded his arms, smirking. "You believe all this ghost melarky, or you thinkin' this is some pokemon story gone awry?"

Harper stared in amazement at the sight! It might seem strange that her jaw was dropped, considering the fact that the kinda-kid had intended to see ghosts today... but who would have thought a shark could be a dog? Or perhaps it was a dog that was a shark?
Whichever it was she couldn't help but smile at it, even though she was still afraid of its ferocious pair of teeth and wouldn't be touching them or going near them anytime soon. That just seemed smart, really.
As the much taller companion rubbed her noggin, she couldn't help but feel a bit flushed. Not embarrassed about being treated like a kid, which other people in her shoes might be... but no, she was red in the face because being pat on the head made her think of Papa. It seemed to be a favorite of older men, perhaps. (Not that she was sure Shaun was older than her, it seemed quite close from her perspective.) She just was used to thinking of people like that.
Shaun also brought up the topic of his gender, but rather than her own inner thoughts about him being quite like a papa, he was wondering if a ghost looking for her ghostly husband wouldn't be as choosey about a pair of boobies. To be honest, Harper really didn't know. She didn't really claim to be a ghost expert... or wait, she supposed she kind of did.
"Um..." she spoke, trying to say something particularly expert, but off to a bad start. Expert's never said um. "Um.." A second time and she found something better to say. "I mean, once she drags a guy to the sea they just become a soul too, right? A ghost? If you got a boy soul I think she wouldn't mind so much."
Yeah, as far as she guessed he was totally screwed. Which she supposed she should have considered before coming out to sea with only him to take him out. S-She had been a totally helpful boat helper, however, and surely she could make it back by herself... right?
Or maybe Lady Madeline really wouldn't be able to tell. Maybe he had the perfect disguise. They had to hope!
Shaun's question, if she believed in ghosts or not... tripped her up a little bit. Of course in her heart she just wanted to say yes, she absolutely did. Would she really have spent so much time with her Papa, looking and search if she didn't?
She exhaled a bit loudly and pursed her lips, looking a bit gloomy out over the horizon. She started feel just the littlest bit silly for a moment. No. She had to believe. She couldn't just stop now. It was just doubts because the one who was always strong for her wasn't here anymore.
"Yeah, I guess so." she said. "Papa taught me to always check, anyway. Don't just assume you know, find out. Watch! Listen!" She nodded, her face still a bit red because she was embarrassed to admit she believed in ghosts even though ghost Pokemon existed all over, and she scanned the horizon with her hand above her eyes to distract herself.
"Do you... not?"

Hearing the explanation of "well you have a male soul" certainly didn't put Shaun's nerves at ease, pushing off from the side of the boat and making an unconscious effort to stay as inside the boat's limits as possible. Not give any spooky siren ladies an excuse to make a grab for him. All the same he may not have believed explicitly in the ghosts at work here, but things could still make his skin crawl even if he didn't believe in them...like all land vanishing while he was out at sea. It would never happen, it was impossible, but the idea of sailing back the way he came and not finding a speck of land cause it all just poofed...
nnnnngh...fuck that. Get it off the brain now.
Harper's seemingly cautious question of his own believe was enough to bring him out of a daze, rubbing his arm and narrowing his eyes...sure if she believed in that it was fine but did she really expect him to...
"I...I definitely believe something probably started these rumors...but whether it's some ghost, a Pokemon, or a drunken lie people use to explain how they lost their boats at sea...who knows eh?"
