Brent had been nervous almost immediately when he was told to give a report on the store's progress and its income. He spent three whole days worrying about it and gathering every piece of information he could gather. Profits, loses, how much produce had to be tossed due to rot. All of it had to be clear and precise for his father. He even had to be reminded to eat by his pokemon.
Somehow it all turned out fine. The old man looked over the papers, said good work and that was that. Now officially exhausted he had stopped in a field to lay out and finally relax. The first hurdle had been jumped over and his position as owner of the store was pretty much secure now. He had left Amelia and Trent in charge while he was gone. Taking the roughhouse brothers with him because the last thing he needed was a fire while he was gone.
They hadn't spent this long a time in pokeballs before and he felt a bit bad about it. He let the pair out with a resounding click. The vulpix immediately jumping around in the grass before stopping to taste it. The houndour was more wary of the new feeling beneath his paws sniffing at the savannah grass brown and slightly prickly. It didn't take long for his brother to tackle him nipping at his ears.
"Stay close you two," Brent said content to just watch the pair for now. He was a bit worried about the store but knew it was in good hands. He probably wouldn't get too often a chance to relax like this so he may as well enjoy it. WORDS: 282 TAGGED: @characters NOTES: Pokeballs Hover to show pokemon and moves - Savannah Terrain

It didn't take long for the ears of the boys to perk up. Both stopping in their play to listen to something they both found strange and disturbing. Vence let out a faint wine while Cinder just stared curiously in the direction of the noises. The smell of pokemon they had never met wafting through the air only to be followed by snarls.
At first, Brent didn't hear it but he noticed the change in their posture almost immediately. He looked in the direction they were staring. He couldn't see much but the grass was moving and then he noticed the blue between the blades. It wasn't just one pokemon but several and they were moving quickly. The sound of snarls finally reached his ears and Brent knew he didn't want to mess with the pack.
Brent stood ready to try and scare them away as well as run himself. He grabbed the boys balls ready to return them when he noticed something else moving in the grass. He hadn't seen it before its brown coloring keeping it well hidden. Between its paws was an egg as it hopped along trying to escape the pack of what he could now tell were shinx and a luxio.
While his first thought had been to run now looking at the poor bunnelby in dire straits protecting its egg he had to protect the mother and its baby. Brent yelled out at them waving his arms to make himself look bigger even as he placed himself right between them. At first, the pack scattered startled by his sudden interference. They recollected themselves all much too soon though their bodies crackling with electricity in anger.
Brent swallowed a bit then turned his head only to see the bunnelby cowering down just as scared of him as the pack. Yeah, they had to bolt. It was Cinder who bought him just a little time. The little fox jumping at one of the shinxes and releasing an ember. The smell of burnt hair wafted up causing the others to stop in confusion. Worried for the pups safety he quickly returned the two and scooped up the bunnelby bolting.
The sound of the chase echoed in his ears a long moment. They were right on his heels. He may have had longer legs but they could run just as fast on four. Thankfully the sounds started receding after a moment. The pack already tired from chasing the bunnelby could not keep up with a set of fresh untired legs. Brent slowly came to a stop looking to the bunnelby whose head was buried in his arms.
He shifted her sitting her down in the grass only to notice she was a he. Well even male pokemon took care of the kids sometimes he supposed. Honest mistake. He gave it a small pat on the head a few times before it bolted without so much as a thank you. Brent straightened looking out across the field. He had no idea where he was now. He had two pokemon with good noses so they could retrace their steps but the pack was back along that path. Probably would be for a little while anyway.
Brent sat down resting his slightly achy legs at the sudden exercise. He felt his pocket wiggle before the ball released Cinder. The vulpix looking every which way a slight glow in his mouth. Brent just shook his head and released Vence who was quick to climb into his arms even as he looked around uncertain. Brent held and pet him reassuringly as Cinder checked the area out.

Trouble was around every turn it seemed. How Brent could have failed to notice the large grey mass slowly making its way through the brush was beyond him. It was roughly half his height and definitely all muscle that was a rhyhorn for you. Low and behold the bunnelby was on its back just lounging there between its fringe and spine. Wait, was that the same one? Brent honestly couldn't tell.
Cinder was naturally curious about the larger pokemon. Walking right up to sniff at it nose to nose. It didn't seem to mind any sniffing right back before snorting. It's lack of threatening action making Brent sigh in relief. He wasn't sure if the boys could handle a fight. Vence remained in his arms watching them a moment longer before getting down and wagging his tail as he sniffed at the larger pokemon as well.
Cinders attention was now to the lagomorph his paws up on the rhyhorns shoulder swatting at the reclining bunnelby. It gave an annoyed huff swatting right back with one of its ears. Taking that as a sign of play Cinder began trying to hop up to get the long-eared pokemon earning a chattering rebuke as it tried to keep its position on the rhyhorn to itself.
Brent chuckled at the pair making friends of the wild pokemon. Neither seeming overly dangerous allowing him to continue to rest and wonder how long they should wait before heading back the way he ran. He doubted they would stay around that path for long but had little knowledge about luxio packs.
It was the rhyhorn who decided to move along first. It's robust frame shifting as it began making its way through the grass. The bunnelby caught of guard by the movement struggling to stay on. It huffed then looked back at the playful vulpix who's head was cocked to the side with sorrowful eyes. They didn't get to play nearly long enough in his opinion. Yet the rhyhorn satisfied their curiousity and wanted to get to a pond not but a few miles from them. Thirst driving her more than anything.
"Thank's for being gentle," Brent called after her. Growing up in this region he had heard some terrible things about rhyhorns charging people with little warning. He was glad she wasn't the kind to do so. "Ready to try heading back ourselves guys?"
A yip resounded from Vence who was eager to return to a place he knew. Though new things weren't bad they could definitely be scary. Cinder more or less shrugged. He wanted to play more and explore a bit but if the pokemon they met so far were any indication they seemed more interested in themselves than the wandering trio. Brent just took both as a yes.
"Alright you have to sniff the way back," Brent leaned down letting Vence sniff then lick his hand. Brent kind of sighed. They hadn't been trained for this. Still, Vence was quick to pick up on what he wanted as he motioned to the ground. The pup trotting off only to stop and look at him with a 'are you following' look. Brent smiled and they began wandering back towards the road.

Trent stopped curiously as he saw a lengthy bird walking through the grass. It's attention on a bobbing pink curl in front of it. The one head leaning in to lightly peck at the curl. Without warning the curl stopped and after a moment the doduo was hopping on one leg. Whatever they just pecked at didn't like being touched. Brent hid a chuckle.
The pups watched him a moment not sure what he was watching. The grass obscured their view a bit so they began hopping up and down to see the troubled bird. It's one head pecking the other in rebuke for touching the bobbing pink spiral. The other head hanging low in defeat.
The pink spiral moved on at a decent pace leaving Brent to guess what it was a cleffa or maybe a chansey. Honestly, he was just thinking of pink pokemon. Brent went to move on when the one head spotted him. The other head perking up quickly as the two heads stared.
"Uh, better luck next time guys," Brent said unsure what they were thinking.
Brent returned his attention to his own pokemon only to see a certain vulpix missing. He was quick to guess where to though. His attention returned to the doduo just in time to see it jump from its skin. Having been focused on the human it hadn't seen the sly little fox sneak up on it. It's talons swatted at Cinder trying to keep him away.
Cinder gave a small growl in response. Unlike the rabbits ears before he could see the sharp claws. Taking it more as a threat the vulpix spat an ember at the bird making it tumble back onto its rump as its heads told its feet to go different ways. The one head drooped again as though saying sorry. While the other glared daggers.
"Come on boy's," Brent said picking Cinder up to prevent him from attacking the poor bird again. The vulpix struggling a moment in his arm almost making him drop the pup before settling down.
Vence was more apt to sniffing the drooping head than approaching the other. The two heads a mystery to him just the same. He cocked his head and the bird mirrored the gesture. It made Vence's tail wag as the bird seemed less threatening when it was a few feet shorter.
"We wandered from the path now," Brent said looking around. The grassland all looked the same. "We'll have a hard time finding the road now." They could retrace again but honestly, Brent wasn't sure if they had been on the right path to begin with.
The one head pecked the other again. The duo agreeing to stand back up their feathers slightly ruffled. The friendlier head bent back down to the houndour. Chirping in the language only pokemon could understand. Vence's joy was apparent as he licked the birds face. It straightened sharply the heads looking at one another unsure what to do about it. Still they had already made a promise. They knew where the road was.
The bird led the way with Vence close behind. Brent was unsure what to make of him following the bird but decided it wanted to show them something and followed. Cinder pouted in his arms wanting down but got to see the road before his brother. The pair happy to know they would be home in a couple hours.
"Thank you,"Brent said as he stepped out onto the gravel path. It seemed even the wild pokemon knew what a road is. Eager to get home after their misadventure Brent started walking only to stop when Vence wasn't coming with him. The pup sitting by the large bird chatting happily.
"What you think Cinder? Should we offer to bring him with us," Brent asked. The vulpix letting out a soft noise. He wanted his brother happy even if it meant bringing home a friend he got off on the wrong talon with.
"Care to join us," Brent asked walking back over.
The doduo perking at his voice. The pair looking at one another and turning their heads inwards towards their body as though secretly chatting it out. Brent just chuckled and shook his head returning Cinder first then Vence. He held out an extra pokeball as an offering to the bird waiting for the answer.

The one head pecked lightly at the ball the other nipping at it in response as they were sucked in. Brent just chuckled shaking his head. They were an odd...pair? He wasn't sure if he should refer to it as one being or two. He pondered the question as he began walking.
He stopped not long after at the sound of hoofbeats behind him. A man with a tauros pulling a wagon started passing by. A brief hello was exchanged and Brent trotted to keep up long enough to ask for a ride. With a yes he hopped onto the back and enjoyed the ride for as long as it would last. It was going to be smooth sailing back to his store.
