Yellow eyes shifted over the tomb that was Alterna’s Wasteland slowly. From time to time since coming to Veria, Orion had heard of it, seen the fringes of it, and been told how horrible and dangerous it was. Still, this was the first time he saw it for himself. Cracked, broken grass of various colors shifted line sand under his feet. The bark of trees fell to pieces as he brushed by. The remains of Pokemon lay in ruins everywhere. For the first time since coming to Veria, Orion could honestly admit to feeling something akin to what he’d felt in Era. This is some kind of hell.
Orion had been warned repeatedly that there were dangerous Pokemon in the area, fierce beasts of all kinds that had flooded in from Arceus knew where. It was unsafe for even some of the more advanced trainers to handle let alone intermediate or beginners- let alone civilians. These things Orion had heard, understood, and disregarded up until that very moment. Now, now he understood, though. To think supposedly this Niso Konto caused all this… Orion smirked a little dryly to himself. Made a personal hell in an otherwise paradise. Nice work… Shifting passed some more dead brush, Orion kept moving, slowly, carefully.

Continuing his trek through the expanse of death, Orion felt the hairs on the back of his neck start to stand on end. His heart beat quickened even though his pace stayed the same. Unsafe. The word repeated over and over the further he went in. This place is unsafe. Muscles clenched and relaxed, and finally Orion fished out a Pokeball and released a Combusken he’d brought with him. “Talon, keep your eyes peeled,” Orion spoke, not giving the Combusken time to relax. “This place is dangerous.” More dangerous than the bulk of his Pokemon probably understood or realized. Only a few had come with him from Era. Only a few knew what he was feeling right then.
The tone in Orion’s voice was enough for the Combusken to straighten some. Sure, his human was usually pretty serious in one form or fashion or another, but this was… almost uncomfortable, actually. Fiery eyes flashed around warily, taking in the scene as it appeared before him. Rather quickly he followed after Orion as the man started walking, but the unsettling crunch of the grass would have him looking down immediately after. What…. What? What was this? Looking back up at Orion’s back, the Combusken let out an uncertain sound. Without looking at him, Orion nodded. “Keep focused.” Right, right.
It wouldn’t take either of them too long to sense eyes upon them. A yellow eye flicked to an orange one before both flicked forward to meet a brighter yellow one. A large dinosaur of sorts stood partially hidden by a tree, staring warily. A Meganium? Of all Pokemon to be there, this was one of the last Orion would have expected. Still, the fierce look it was giving him was enough to have Orion shifting a little from one stance to the other. “Talon, we’re going to fight,” Orion stated. The Combusken looked up at him wide-eyed for a moment before looking back again. R-right! He could do this! He was strong! Leaping forward, he took a fighting stance.
The Meganium wasted no time releasing a Petal Dance. An explosion of leaves burst forth destroying the tree it had been standing behind and rushing at the Combusken. “Flame Burst,” Orion ordered causing the Combusken to step down quickly and burst into flames. Fire spread out cutting through the petals and causing them to fall downward. The Meganium cried loudly before using a Magical Leaf instead. “Run through it and Night Slash,” Orion ordered. The Combusken nodded breaking into a run and taking the cuts of leaves as they came. Forming a Night Slash in one claw, he slammed into the Meganium causing it to crash sideways into another tree that immediately toppled. “Flame Burst again,” Orion went on. Leaping in the air and engulphing himself in flames again, the Combusken landed on the Meganium and burst into flames.
The Great Grass Type cried out, summoning a Synthesis to save him. Retaliating then with some Poison Powder, the Meganium then swept up a Petal Dance once more. Caught between posion and leaves, the Combusken was forced to bounce back some, inhaling the poison and taking some of the cuts. “Shit,” escaped from Orion as he shifted stances. “Flame Burst in close again!” They were now on a fucking time limit because of this thing, and he was going to get it wrapped up as fast as possible.
Leaping forwards again, the Combusken burst into flames and scorched the Meganium again. The Meganium tried for a Synthesis but was caught off guard when the Combusken didn’t immediately back off again but continued on with a Night Slash. Crashing to the ground, the Meganium struggled to get up and managed to complete a Synthesis. A ‘tch’ sound escaped from Orion right after. “Mirror Move!” he called. At first the Combusken was confused, but on recalling what that last move was, he understood the nature of it. Synthesizing himself, the Combusken regained some strength. “Flame Burst now!” Leaping forward, the Combusken burst into flames again burning and finishing his target this time.

Right as it seemed Talon had won the battle, a cry echoed through the area. An Ampharos was already charging and releasing a Zap Cannon. “Baton Pass!” Orion shouted causing the Combusken to flash back into his Pokeball avoiding the blast. The Ampharos glanced sideways crying out loudly before using Cotton Guard to solidify her defenses. Hell, where did you come from? It didn’t matter now. This was clearly a battle.
Grabbing both his Combusken and Klang’s Pokeballs, Orion released them both at the same time. “Gear, Mirror Shot, Talon Flame Burst,” he called right after. Still poisoned but doing His Best, the Combusken rushed forward, coating himself in fire and pouncing on the Ampharos. Bursting into flames, he flipped off right in time for the Klang to use a Mirror Shot. Smashed with fire and blinded by light, the Ampharos recoiled. Forming a Thunder Punch, she swiped sideways missing the Combusken as he danced around her. “Keep blinding it and keep up the fire!” Orion called.
The Klang once more used a Mirror Shot. The bright light flashed and dazed the Ampharos who was doing her best now not to look. Unfortunately, it would keep her from seeing the Combusken as he came at her again kicking and bursting into flames. She cried out frustrated and released a Dragon Pulse at the Klang. Smashed into, however, the gear Pokemon took it relatively well all things considered. Orion’s gaze briefly flickered to it before looking forward again. “Keep it up you two,” he ordered. Fire Blazed and Light Shimmered. Even as she managed to get off a Thunder Punch on the Combusken, the Ampharos was no match for two of them. Falling forward, she fainted after a couple more rounds.
Orion exhaled slowly rubbing the side of his face. Talon took a knee panting and flinching from poison and exhaustion. It wouldn’t take his trainer more than a couple of seconds to return him thereafter. The Klang had suffered some damage but seemed relatively unscathed.

Orion exhaled slowly. Arceus this place was crawling with territorial Pokemon. Muttering something under his breath, he’d return the Klang for now and release a duo he’d been training up recently: his evolved Hakamo-o and Stufful. Upon bursting from their balls, both exchanged a glance before meeting Orion’s gaze.
“Be careful, both of you,” Orion warned. “This place is dangerous.” As if he couldn’t emphasize that enough. Yet. Yet? He was admittedly… having fun, or so Orion realized on reflection. The rush of terror was actually energizing, and for as nervous as he felt about dealing with whatever came their way, the sense of uncertainty was actually pretty… ok? Pretty interesting? Heh.
Starting forward again, Orion walked for a while followed closely by his two companions. Each would come to the startling realization that the grass and everything around them was dead, but how they chose to handle it was all but the opposite. While the Hakamo-o felt uncomfortable frustration at being in the area, the Stufful felt a vague sense of indifference. She could handle herself. That’s all there was to it.
It would be the flapping of wings that would cause the trio to stop short of their trek. Looking sideways into the folds of a dead tree, Orion’s eyes grew as he caught sight of the Decidueye standing there. Damn, if he had the Pokeballs for this, he swore he’d be going crazy right then but… But. A Ghosty chain burst forth and smashed into the Hakamo-o chaning her to the ground. She cried out from the force of the blow and swatted her arm after the fact. Using a Dragon Dance, she powered herself up, ready for battle.
The Stufful, meanwhile, smiled briefly before forming a Hammer Arm and smashing it into the tree the Decidueye was in. The Ghost Bird leapt from the tree as it crashed to the ground and came forward with a Leaf Blade. A sharp cry escaped from the Stufful, but she took it better than she might have without her special ability.
All the while, Orion stood there watching, squinting. “Haka, use Dragon Claw,” he instructed. The Hakamo-o paused as she was about to use her latest arsenal move before nodding and powering up her Dragon power instead. Leaping forward and slashing at the Decidueye, she hit him hard into a tree. The Stufful, meanwhile, swung lower and hit with a Brutal Swing right after causing the Decidueye to reel from the force of the move. Restoring himself with a Synthesis, he flew up towards a tree.
“Don’t let him get away,” Orion growled. The Stufful leapt into the air and brought an arm up hard against the Decidueye once again. Sent crashing to the ground, the bird struggled to get up. The Hakamo-o had taken a brief moment to perform yet another Dragon Dance before swinging forward with her fierce Claws. The Decidueye burst with Feathers trying to slow his attackers, but it would only do so much with both of them moving in intervals. The Stufful’s next Brutal Swing would do him in, however, and he deflated thereafter.

With the defeat of the Decidueye, Orion smirked briefly. “Nice work both of you,” he stated briefly before making a head gesture onwards. They had more to see, more to fight. Perhaps he might have bene a little high off the adrenaline. Who knew? The grass crumpled under their feet as they moved.
It would not be long before another Pokemon came into their sights, an Espeon curled under a tree. The psychic Eeveeloution would open one eye and stare at the human and his Pokemon before smirking a bit at the clear type advantage he held. Shifting up, he swatted his tail and hissed softly daring them to try and take him on. The Hakamo-o jingled with irritation at such a challenge while the Stufful yipped willing to give it ago. Orion, however, was not about to lose some of his strongest Pokemon out there of all places. Fishing into his pocket, he’d release a different Pokemon, one he hadn’t used in quite some time but needed.
Toxi burst forth in all her gunk, the Alolan Grimer smiling wildly. The Espeon scoffed at seeing such a Pokemon assuming the weakness of its species was consistent across even this stranger looking one. Formulating a Psychic, he’d release it only to have the waves seemingly faze through the Grimer who smiled unaffected.
Orion snorted softly. “You’re not the only one to make that mistake~ Toxi, Crunch,” Orion ordered. The Grimer waved a sludge arm before curling down low and springing forward at the Espeon. Crunching down on his shoulder, she made him yelp and hiss. Flailing considerably, the Espeon backed up and ushered out a Swift instead. The signature stars went crashing forward, but the Grimer’s strong defense kept her relatively well off.
“Mud Bomb,” Orion continued on unfazed. The Grimer squished down and released a rush of mud at the Espeon who hissed as it spattered him. Shaking out his fur, he was about to perform a Morning Sun when Orion’s voice cut through again. “Crunch again!” Before he had chance to react, the Espeon was bitten again by the sharp fangs of this strange gunk monster and fainted right after that.
