She imagined that this was what her home world would look like a hundred, maybe two hundred years later. Overgrown, with wildlife and greenery claiming every inch of once-human territory, breaking apart concrete and cobblestone. Life would take hold and then flourish. Whether it would include humans or not, she didn't know. Well, there was no need for such speculation. Juneau had left all of that behind already. She had more important things to attend to, like treasure hunting and beating some battle sense into her poor little Hoppip. "I can tell you don't like to battle, Indrani," she chirped to the miserable Hoppip, who was bouncing by her side as she waded into the shallow floods. Her shoes squelched. "But you have to, if you want to get strong and learn more powder moves. Okay? It's all necessary." Yakan, her Aegislash, floated behind Indrani with a menacing glint in his eye. "Yakan will oversee your training while I look around for treasure. Have fun and get along, you two." She patted Yakan's hilt, pulling away just in time to evade the edge of his blade. Feisty. Indrani watched with increasing despair as Juneau wandered further away. Yakan was pleased.

Indrani squirmed as Yakan turned his singular narrowed eye on him, measuring him up. Yakan knew of the Hoppip's aspirations of developing strong powder-related moves which, frankly, he didn't think much of. Yakan liked to throw up an impregnable defense, then hit fast and hard and heavy. He was a lean mean killing machine, a striker and tanker in one. He didn't care for status effects. They were gradual, and Yakan didn't do gradual. His fights ended too quickly for that. But he couldn't shape Indrani into his likeness. Indrani didn't have the build, power, talent, or guts. He was much better suited for providing support in the form of status moves, to Yakan's disdain. Oh well. Yakan could handle the front lines on this team himself. Everyone else was just there to back him up. >>Here's what you're going to do,<< Yakan said to the Hoppip, his voice as harsh as the steel he was made of. Indrani quaked. >>You're going to use one of your powder moves on the opponent. Then you're going to use Fairy Wind until they're knocked out. In a real battle I'll do all the real fighting, but right now you're learning how to fend for yourself.<< A Sweet Scent drifted from the undergrowth nearby. >>There's your opponent,<< Yakan grunted, pushing the Hoppip roughly forward with the flat of his blade. >>Don't mess this up.<< Indrani didn't want to do this. He peeked through the leaves and found a tiny Bounsweet chowing down on a berry and minding her own business. She hadn't noticed him yet and was likely releasing the Sweet Scent out of happiness. Indrani didn't want to disturb her meal, but Yakan's oppressive gaze was piercing his back. >>Sorry,<< he mumbled under his breath, right as he spread a sickly yellow Stun Spore over the unsuspecting Bounsweet with the aid of a Fairy Wind. She cried out as her body went rigid, giving him time to blast another Fairy Wind her way. She lurched toward him with a Rapid Spin, releasing more Sweet Scent as she did so to ensure he remained within her reach. Stumbling back, Indrani used Fairy Wind one last time and then it was over. The Bounsweet slumped over. Indrani felt a rush of guilt and adrenaline as he stared down, which was quickly overshadowed by horror as Yakan drifted over and stuck the point of his blade into the Bounsweet's limp body. The Aegislash sucked as much life force as he could without killing her, then tossed her body away. >>That was barely a snack,<< he huffed, turning to the Hoppip. >>Make a proper meal next time.<< Meanwhile, Juneau stumbled upon an odd, marble-like stone nested at the base of a ruin. "Dunno what this is," she hummed as she slipped it into her knapsack, "but it looks valuable. Maybe I can sell it for something." notes: claiming gyaradosite, defeated bounsweet.

Now Indrani really, really didn't want to train. It was bad enough that he had to ambush innocent wild Pokemon, but weakening them to the point where Yakan could steal their life force? Yes, the Bounsweet hadn't been killed, but she'd been driven way to close to the edge for his liking. What if Yakan had stolen just a little more? He quivered at the thought. Yakan ignored Indrani's internal turmoil, obvious though it was. >>Your Fairy Wind is even weaker than I thought it would be. You have no offensive potential, and almost as little defensive potential. Status moves are all you're good for.<< He meant this as more of an objective overview than a scathing remark, but he couldn't stop his disdain from leaking into his voice. Indrani shriveled. >>You are capable of learning healing moves, yes? Which ones?<< It took Indrani a moment to realize that he was expected to answer. >>O-oh, um... Synthesis, Leech Seed, and draining moves like Absorb... I think.<< >>I see. Then your best bet in battle is to inflict status effects on your opponent while self-healing to ensure you don't faint,<< Yakan said. >>There's your end goal. Until then, keep doing what you did last battle.<< And just like that, Yakan had set out his lifelong battle strategy. Indrani had to admit that it wasn't a bad one, though. As long as he could have his powder moves, he was satisfied. A rustling came from the undergrowth nearby. Yakan shoved Indrani toward it without a word. The Hoppip gulped as he inched ever closer, then leaped right behind his next opponent. This turned out to be a wild Exeggutor who was investigating the Bounsweet's limp body, his eyes narrowed. He whirled around as soon as he heard the Hoppip land on the ground. Indrani hesitated, the memory of Yakan taking the Bounsweet's life force flashing over his eyes. The Exeggutor took the opportunity to fire off a Hypnosis at him, which struck. Just before he nodded off to sleep, though, Indrani spread a Sleep Powder over the vicinity in retaliation. Both Hoppip and Exeggutor slumped over on the ground, their eyes closed, their breaths slowed. Yakan scoffed. The Exeggutor was first to awaken. He slammed Indrani with a Confusion that startled him conscious, then followed up with an attempted Wood Hammer. Squeaking, Indrani threw himself into the air to dodge the high-power attack, showering a Poison Powder-Fairy Wind combination down onto his opponent as he did so. A Psyshock distorted the air and spiraled toward the Hoppip before he could even land. He was hit, and he tumbled backward with a gasp from the damage. It felt like he had been slammed bodily by the Exeggutor himself, though of course that hadn't been the case. Now that he was some distance away from his opponent, Indrani had some time to plan his next move. He had to be utterly careful—the Exeggutor was much stronger than him, and that Wood Hammer of his would knock him out flat. He didn't know how much more damage he could sustain. If only Indrani could get him to fall asleep again... His train of thought was cut off as the Exeggutor rushed another Confusion at him. He tumbled away once more, struggling to regain his balance as his opponent barreled toward him, possibly to attempt a Wood Hammer again. Panicked, Indrani fired off two different powders—Sleep Powder and Stun Spore. The Exeggutor ducked his head to avoid breathing in the Sleep Powder, but the unexpected Stun Spore settled over his muscles and made him go rigid. That would have to do for now. As the Exeggutor struggled to close the distance between them, Indrani shot off as many Fairy Winds as he could. They barely seemed to scrape him, though, and soon enough the Exeggutor stood over the battered, bruised Hoppip. He leaned in to deliver the finishing blow and— Collapsed. It seemed the poison had finished him off. Meanwhile, Juneau drew a mysterious charm out of an old mahogany chest, careful not to shift her weight enough to break the brittle floorboard beneath her. "Hm... I'm finding all kinds of weird things here, huh?" notes: defeated the exeggutor (barely), claiming z-charm.

Juneau somehow made her way up to the second floor of the ruin without having the floor collapse under her. There she found another strange stone, similar in shape but different in color to the one she'd found earlier today. "These things are everywhere," she observed, picking it up and stuffing it in her satchel. "Wonder if I can get someone to appraise them..." Deciding that it was about time for her to check up on Indrani's progress, Juneau carefully wended down the stairs, stepped out of the ruin, and headed back toward where she'd left her Hoppip and Aegislash. When she returned, she was met by the sight of a Skiploom laying bloodied on the grass, still conscious through only sheer will. Yakan hovered impassively above him. "Oh! He evolved!" Juneau said, excitement coloring her voice. She hurried over to Indrani and propped him upright. "Must've been hard, huh? Well, I'm sure you've gotten much stronger. Take a break—you deserve it." And with that, Juneau returned him to his Pokeball. She could make out a sigh of relief from him before he disappeared in a flash of red light. She turned to her Aegislash with a smile. "Well done. Though, don't you think you might've gone a bit too hard on him?" Yakan stared with his single eye. She sighed. "I thought not. I guess it doesn't matter, as long as you produce results." She sure hoped no one would get killed under his supervision. That would put a damper on team morale. "We're not done yet. I want to work out a battle strategy for Kofi too, as long as we're here. Before that, though, you should probably take care of the herd coming our way." Without pause, the Aegislash conducted two Swords Dances in quick succession. This was the initial phase of his and Juneau's routine in the face of enemy approach: Juneau spotted steadily approaching aura tracks and alerted them to Yakan, and Yakan prepared himself for battle. Four Exeggcutes and an Alolan Exeggutor emerged from the overgrowth, apparently searching for their fallen cousin. One Brutal Swing boosted by the Swords Dances from before and they were all felled, along with some of the thinner trees nearby. The battle was over before it could even be a battle. Juneau almost felt bad. "Eat up," she said to Yakan, who seemed annoyed that she was telling him to do what he had intended to do in the first place. He made a beeline for the abnormally tall Exeggutor while Juneau picked Kofi's Pokeball out of her satchel. notes: defeated the horde, claiming alakazite.
