Nikolai Laska Orion Alim-VerdiWith the festival starting up, Mia's family had already started making preperations for Saturday. Mia was pretty busy herself, either enjoying the festival, helping friends set up or run stalls, or even judging the latest contest, so Saturday, after the winners were announced, she'd have the whole night to catch up with her family, Vesta, and just generally enjoy the tradition of watching them set off their fireworks, backdropped by the final signs of Bal's comet before it dissapeared for another year. Of course, thinking of the festivities, she thought of the guest she'd brought the last time, Nik...boy had he fucked up a good evening that day...ah they were good now. Engaged even...wow that was weird to think of...THAT asshole was the person she now loved...huh. Probably best not to think about stuff like that for too long unless she wanted to burst out into nervous giggles. All the same she had invited Nik last year, and started to work on a text to invite him again...although...the star festival was a big event and it was likely he might wanna spend it with Orion...she still didn't have the BEST impression of him but...they were all gonna get weird triple married one day if things went well so...she retyped some of the text, and sent it, hoping that the 4 of them could all enjoy a day with their partners. 'Hey Nik. The Kearney fireworks are coming up >8D Of course this is your OFFICIAL INVITE! You get to bring your ass over here with Orion and watch the bitchin' Kearney fireworks!' She then sent a quick follow up 'Assuming you're both free, of course >;3'

Nik was half-sitting, half-lying on the couch, somewhat hearing but not especially listening to whatever was on tv while they worked on a painting commission they'd recently gotten from a bakery a few blocks down. It wasn't exactly their forte, but the client didn't seem too picky and little odd jobs helped them feel like they were contributing.
When their phone buzzed, they sat up and set the canvas aside carefully next to the paints on the coffee table. (Was this an advisable setup? Nah, but it was comfy so fuck it.)
Brows raised when they read the text. Eyes moved to Orion, who was working on dinner in the kitchen. Ah, what time was it anyway? They checked: still around half an hour until this week's episode of Fish In The Sea, all right. So Orion should easily be done in time, not that Nik doubted his judgment starting when he did. (They just wanted to make extra sure they could both find out if Mariah really double-crossed Toby or if Gallahad was right about her being mind-controlled by Olivia's Malamar.)
Right, right, Mia though.

Really? That was the only part of that to get a response? Not even a "oh hey how are ya" just "Orion? Really?" All the same she snickered and rolled her eyes, getting comfy again before sending another text back.
'Yes I want Orion to come. He's your fiance, can't have you without him at this point.' She sent that but right away felt that could be read as kinda sassy or bitchy, and just sent another after it to try and be sure 'What I mean to say is, it'd feel weird having you and Ves there without him. We're all in this weird little selective four way together right?'

Nik stared at the phone after that initial response. It wasn't 'sassy' or 'bitchy', but it did... make them feel odd. Did they really not do things without Orion anymore? They.. did, right? Surely she was just exaggerating? It wasn't like Orion normally came with them to hang out with her.. unless they talked about him more than they realized or something.
Before they could stress too much more, though, she texted again. ... Oh...
-- Ah, didn't realize you meant Vesta would be there too. Guess that makes more sense.--
-- Not really sure if this is the best idea tbh but I'm sure you already thought about that given last year lol. So I can ask him. --
Looking up, they called to the kitchen, "Hey babe? Mia's family does this big fireworks thing every year at the end of the Star Festival and she wants to know if we wanna hang out with her and Vesta. What would you think about it?"

Orion hummed a bit as he chopped the last of the onions and peppers before dropping them into the sizzling mess of thinly sliced sausage, tomatoes, raw herbs, and spices. It was a simple dish, as much a throw something together as a reasonable thing to eat, but he focused in on it as he made it, keeping an eye on the temperature and sear. As Nik called, Orion instinctively turned the heat down and looked over to Nik in the living room. Hang out with Mia and her girlfriend during Star Fest? Orion’s lips pursed a little before he shrugged a bit. “Sure, sounds interesting,” he answered simply enough.

Twisting on a heel and sinking into her couch as she continued to text back and forth with Nik, she felt she maybe wasn't doing the best job at conveying why she was inviting Orion over the phone since the Vesta part of all that seemed to be what was focused on. She thought about trying to emphasize how she did want Orion to be there...not because it was 'fair' but because she did wanna get along better with him and it seemed just...right that they all start getting along since they were gonna be this weird big family thing soon. Right? Ugh yeah she could not convey that in text well enough.
-Yeah she couldn't make it last year since she was visiting family, but she's here this year and...to be honest I dunno what was up with Orion last time. Was he even in the region by then?-
Yeah that'd do to keep the conversation going.

Mmm... 'Interesting' sure was one way to put it. "Have you met Vesta, actually?" Nik thought aloud. "I dunno... I'm probably worrying for nothing, but she just..." Their phone buzzed, and their speech slowed a bit as they balanced talking and reading. "Like.. She's not... terrible or anything, just..."
-- Ah yeah. He and Jazz got here right in the middle of it I think, though he didn't find me until just a bit after. --
-- Guess I'm just surprised you want so many guests for your fam thing. --
A thought occurred, and Nik corrected, "...Actually? Thinking about it more and I might need to worry you'd get along too well with Vesta."
-- Though I guess I forget how big your extended 'family' is lol. --
"She's basically a more pretentious red-headed Marcie. But like, instead of evil she's a chef."

A shake of head was given as if Nik could see it, and Orion turned back to the stove, increasing the heat again. “Don’t think I’ve met her,” he reiterated vocally this time. He really doubted anyone dating Mia could be too terrible either way. As Nik corrected, however, Orion looked over again. Get along too well? Hah? What was— A pretentious redhead with a penchant for cooking? “We’d either get along great or be at each other’s throats,” he thought aloud stirring the food once more. “Should I bring a dish and start a couple’s cooking war?” Cause… hell yeah he could and would if Nik was feeling up to it. Not that… not that he would if asked not to or anything, hah?

When it got round to the comment about her extended family she snickered, about to reply to the family comment itself till Nik managed to cover his own ass. All the same it was a fair point and she had a reply in mind from her last one.
'Yeah I think we've gotten to the point only half of them are related to us by blood. Kinda helps pad out the numbers since my Mom's side of the family ain't such a big fan of the get togethers'
She rested back a bit, wondering if she should try inviting Prissy to one of these things sometime, but ultimately shrugging it off when something else came to mind.
'Actually, know if Jazz is busy? Feels fair to invite him along too. I mean he's practically a part OF me -right arm flexing emoji- '

Nik snorted softly. "Hell yeah," they flippantly replied. "Prove I have the best taste in partners by bringing the best-tasting food. Seems legit to me~"
-- Relatable -- was the brief reply about her mom's side of the family.
Another brief thought brought a smirk. "Guess you might offend her mom, but honestly, I'm fine asserting I've got better taste than Papa Kearney too," they teased.
The next question, though, had them quickly fading to a frown and their stomach turning a bit.
-- I'd... rather not tbh. -- Was that enough? Eh, no they should really give some kind of explanation.
-- Still not really over the Christmas party clusterfuck. Might be best not to go overboard. --
Cool, yeah, that should be a totally feasible reason to-- fingers no why were you still hitting letters don't--
-- Also kind of not really comfortable being in the same room with you and afaik the only man you've ever slept with even with the technicalities involved sorry if that's a weird thing to feel awkward about... --
That... really was not how they planned to mention 'btw I found out about that' if they ever did at all-- and they kind of intended to just not-- but okay welp. |

Orion snorted back. “Then I’ll go all out~” he mused finally taking the food off the heat and starting to distribute it onto plates. Setting the pan back on the stove, he stirred it again before ultimately lowering the temperature to a slow simmer. The thought of offending Mama Kearney was pretty hilarious, he wasn’t going to lie. Nah, all the more reason to go out with a bang then.
Turning thereafter to grab some cups, he called over. “Want something specific to drink?” If yes, he’d get that, if not he’d grab a coke out of the fridge and split it. Setting down the food and drink onto a tray, he walked back in the direction of Nik again. “So what does this gathering or whatever entail?” he asked squishing down next to Nik thereafter.

Oh okay, so Jazz wasn't on the list then. That was fine, the christmas party was a bit of a mess and as close as she and Jazz could be it seemed best to give him some time to recover without putting him into a high pressure environment...or..highly social? Yeah that was a better definition. Jazz would be better and Nik might avoid another mess so-
...Okay...so it wasn't just that.
Mia just typed 'Sure' and sent, rolling her eyes and laying her head back. The quick response might have been a bit snappy but...come on Nik, really? You were near people she'd slept with everytime you stepped into Liggs why did this really matter so much. She wanted to point out she'd slept with them after a while (unless they didn't count the stuff they could get through for whatever reason), but she didn't wanna get into an argument over text about whether they were a 'man' back then, cause that always stirred up enough trouble.
...Still, somehow, she typed out.
'You do know your junk got closer to me than his ever did, right? 8/'

Should they tell Orion this was meant as a joke? ... Nah, the more food the better, and if people were impressed with Orion / Nik got to brag about him at all, that was just icing on the cake. ... Oooh, they should suggest he bake a cake, too. His baked goods were always so good.
Nik would ask for juice in some vague pseudo-attempt to be healthier. Mia's second text came as Orion was pouring the drinks, and Nik frowned a bit. Part of them was angry they were still on this, but... eh, they were mostly used to it by now, and hoped their response would come off as lightly playful as intended.
-- Sorry, I just really like the idea of being the closest thing to an exception you have. He looked girly back then but he's way manlier than me and it scares me. 8c --
As Orion squished against him, Nik let out a slight 'oof' and pressed back against him. "Oh look my favorite dish~" They proceeded to not even look at the tray as Orion set it on the coffee table, instead leaning in to lightly nibble his shoulder for a second before chuckling softly. "Mmm sec." They scooted just enough to let Orion settle more comfortably as they texted again at Mia.
-- I mean come on I already gave up on being jealous of girls, I can't fight an entire tv demographic worth of people. You can't expect me to have a girl as amazing as you and not get at least a LITTLE jealous c'mon! --
They softly giggled to themself as they set the phone aside to turn their attention back to Orion and their dinner. "But yeah, just kind of a big gathering. Like last year it was people sitting on their trucks and picnic blankets and lounge chairs. Just food and chatting and a really big fireworks show. Mostly spent last year chatting with Mia's brother and cuddling with her and Jasna. ...Then I might've made an ass of myself asking to kiss her but hooopefully that wouldn't be a problem this year." They snickered.

Orion mayyyy have squished against Nik a couple more times as they pressed back but eased up again right after. A small snort would be all Nik got of that comment and nibble at least for the moment. Pulling the plate up and fork, he took a bit even as he shifted to get more comfortable. Ah yeah, that food was just hot enough still, heh.
Leaning slightly against the arm of the couch, Orion hummed a bit in response. Ah, so something pretty casual then. Not too busy or grandiose as hard as the latter was to associate with Under Liggs in general anyways. “Sounds nice, may bring some beer then too,” he answered in between bites. “What night is it?” He shifted a little, checking his phone and calendar dates. It wasn’t like he could move his schedule around, but he was pretty busy these days heh.

Heh...okay that was a better way of looking at it. She was still a little irked that this was an issue with Jazz of all people, but maybe the closeness between the two she'd never realized herself kinda dug into the issue and made it worse, rather than turn it into something to be glossed over like she thought. Letting out a soft sigh through her nose, she nodded along to her own train of thought and texted back.
'Yeah okay I get that. You are still by far the closest exception to the rule, I promise.' She thought about getting into details about how everything sorta stopped dead when Jazz had the cookie...but nah. Best not, it'd be poking the bear at this point. 'Still, invites there for him if you change your mind, otherwise I'm cool it just being you and Orion.'
She snickered as a thought came. 'Oh, tell Orion to bring some cookies or something unless he wants Vesta to be the top chef there 83 PS I really just want cookies and Vesta's settled on brownies which I also wanted but ya know COOKIES'
